happy toka! yes there really is a charicter by that name in one of baum's oz books. the one where they dig a hole through the center of the earth and come out in china. actualy i don't see myself as happy, who was in a sense a very distant cousin of the scarecrow you're probably more familiar with. for those who don't know, howard i think his name was, who origeonaly wrote the oz stories, did not write just one book but a whole encyclopediea's worth. some at least 13 volumes, possibly more, from which the movie was somewhat, shall we say "creatively" condensed.

considering the name of this forum i'm hoping, some one or some several here are already well awaire of this particular little detail.

oz being a somewhat bigger place then just one emerald city.

=^^=
.../\...

however it may sound, the euphamism "toking" probably did not exist at the time he wrote that, sometime in the 1930s i think, rather the name is a spoonerism for tappiocca, though what he immagined tappiocca to have to do with china i have no idea either.

i don't know anything about the movies other then the old one they used to play on tv all the time. i was docenting at a museum that had some of the books and i read one of them. he COULD very well have had a pumpkin head, i think there was one of baum's own line drawings that showed him thus. yes a scarecrow with a pumpkin head that sounds right, but i don't know about the movies. other then there have been more then one based on the first one more or less. if there was one based on one or several of his other books, that sounds interesting.

i did know someone once (this was when i was up in portaland oregon) who had the whole collection, but the musium (where i docented after i had come back down here to california where i am now) had only three or four of them.

well i'm off to that ozcyclopedia samhain linked to. i went there and thought i could find him right away and now i'm taring my hair out because i haven't tracked him down yet. and i KNOW he has to be there cause it was a darn bound volume i read it in that had been printed back way before i was born and know it had L frank's name all over it, and oz too. i thought it was one of the main stories but i'll make no more assumptions, i hope, untill i track it down, or it kills me trying.

Well there were 13 or 14 volumes written by Baum, I've read a few back a long time ago. I think all his books were written between 1900 and 1929, if I'm remembering yesterday right.

Duuuudes, you start playing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon at the third MGM Lion's roar at the beginning of the movie. (thanks, Jim for remembering when to start it up). It is totally trippy and you will swear they made the album to go with the movie. An example: when Pink Floyd plays "Lunatic on the Grass" is when the scarecrow starts dancing on the grass after being let off the pole. and it goes on and on with the coincidences. You have to try it. It's amazing.

well you know, i'm not so sure it is coincidences. i'm pretty sure they WERE familiar with the movie. wether or not thay actualy intended it that way. i always knew it rememded me of SOMEthing. although i'd always invissioned more of star trek/wars/b5/farscape sort of setting.

i've also felt the music (dark side of the moon) to be sufficiently self contained as to not really require the bennifit of neurotropic chemicals. but then i guess that part of it is just me.

it would, i think, be interesting to do l frank's story lines in a context of believable alienness. all of the oz charicters and all of the earth children transported there transformed into forms that would look at home there while they were. and maybe some little souvineer when they wake up/get teleported back, like maybe a little tail fur or a little more poityness to their ears, not so it would be obvious or embarassing in polite company or anything, but there none the less. i mean after all, who isn't transformed at least a little, by everything they experience. though of course i think also one of the things was to be able to stay mostly yourself also.

No, and we've decided ANY pink floyd music would work. We watched it Friday night and as we had Meddle (just was there) on the CD changer when Dark Side of the Moon ended, we just kept watching and that was funny too.

But here are ALOT of coincidences in the Dark Side of the Moon. Like when they sing "Balanced on the biggest wave", Dorothy is balancing on a fence. Or when they sing "Everyone you meet", Dorothy is shaking the tin man's arm like a handshake. And the music tempo changes when the scenes change or whenever the witches appear. Stuff like that.
