bhadram karnebhih shrunuyamadevaha
bhadram pashye makshabhir yajatraha
sthirairangaihi sushtuvahum swasthanobihi
vyashema devahitam yadayuhu

May our ears hear only good and auspicious things
May our eyes only see that which is auspicious and divine
With strong and healthy body and pure mind,
may we live well, the entire span of years that the Lord has given us.

Here is another, usually chanted during arati.

na tatra suryo bhati na chandra tarakam
nema vidhyuto bhanti kutoyam agnihi
tameva bhantam anubhati sarvam
tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati

The sun does not cast light there, nor does the moon nor the stars,
nor even electricity (lightning) illumines it, so what can this small flame do!
That alone shines and brightens everything
and by its light alone all this is illumined.

The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance.

A more literal translation of the shanti path that you posted is -

That is whole, this is whole
From this whole that whole came.
From this whole when the whole is removed
the whole alone remains.

Of course the word poornam means both whole and hole or zero, and you can see that both ways the meaning is perfect in itself.

Here is one of my very favourite vferses from Srimad Bhagavatam, capturing the essence of karma yoga.

kayena vaacha, manasendriyaiva,
budhyatmana vaaq, prkritir swabhavat,
karomi yad yad sakalam parasmai
narayanayeti samarpayami

translation -

Through body, speech, mind, sense organs,
intellect, word, instinct, nature,
everything that I do
I offer to Narayana.

A note on the word Narayana -

The sanskrit roots of the name Narayana is narasya ayanaha iti narayanaha, that is, that which is the true nature of man is Narayana. Narayana as a resplendent deity, reclining on a snake, in the ocean of milk in vaikuntha loka is mystical imagery, representative of the narayana within us. The milk is representative of the world around us, milk comes from the mother, the world come from Narayana alone. The snake represents our vasanas, the tendencies of the mind and within this narayana is seated, taming the mind, floating gently in the ocean of milk.

This is my interpretation of the imagery, there are, I am certain, more articulate versions.

This is not strictly speaking a prayer, it is a song by Ramprasad, taken from 'Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita'. This can be read on-line at

http://www.kathamrita.org/kathamrita.htm

O my mind, dive deep, taking the name of Kali on your lips – dive into the deep waters of the heart, where the precious stones lie.

If you do not reach the treasure by diving three or four times, it does not mean that the sea of the heart has no treasures within.

Dive with all your might but once, O mind. In the sea of jnana, of Kulkundalini, lie pearls of peace.

By your bhakti and wishing for Shivayukti (union with Shiva), you will reach them.

In this sea, there are six alligators – of lust and the rest – always moving about looking for food.

Smear your body with the turmeric of discrimination. The smell of turmeric will keep them away from you.

Many are the precious gems that lie scattered at the bottom of the sea.

Says Ramprasad, “Jump into the sea and you shall get them.”

I very much like this thread. I saved those prayers...and I stumbled upon this:

"Prayer is the key of the morning and the bolt of the evening. There is no peace without the grace of God, and there is no grace of God without prayer. Prayer is not an old woman’s idle amusement. Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action. Undoubtedly, prayer requires a living faith in God. Heartfelt prayer steadies one’s nerves, humbles one and clearly shows one the next step."- Mahatma Gandhi

OM. Dhyaoh Shaantih, Antariksha Shaantih,
Prithavi Shaantih, Aapah Shaantih, Oshadhyah Shaantih,
Vanaspatyah Shaantih, Vishvedevah Shaantih, Brahma Shaantih,
Sarvam Shaantih, Shaantih Eva Shaantih,
Saa Maa Shaantir-edhi
OM Shaantih, Shaantih, Shaantih

OM. May there be peace in the sky and in the space.
May there be peace on land and in the waters.
May herbs and food bring us peace.
May God bring us peace.
May there be peace throughout the world.
May the peace be peaceful.
May God give me such peace.
OM Peace, Peace, Peace

This is from a set of verses written by the great Sri Adi shankaracharya, where he describes a mental pooja offered to Lord Shiva within his heart.

aatma tvam giriji matih sahacharah pranah shareeram griham
pooja bher vishayopabhoga rachana nidra samadhi sthitih
sancharapadayoh pradakshina vidhi stotrani sarva giro
yad yad karma karomi tat tat akhilam shambho tava aaradhanam

You are my own Inner Self, Girija ( Parvathy devi) is my intellect, your friends and disciples are my pranas (the vital airs) my body is my house.
All that I enjoy in this world is your pooja, sleep is like my samadhi state.
Every step I walk is like pradakhina (where you walk around the temple or idol) and every word spoken is a prayer.
Whatever actions I do are all as a worship to you alone.

Ill post the entire thing later in a separate thread (provided I remember, I have a terrible memory) .

svggardenbeauty, I liked your post, could you tell me what the source of that sloka is? It is really wonderful in the original sanskrit.

The Universal Prayer

Thou art, O Lord! the Creator of this universe. Thou art the Protector of this world. Thou art in the grass and the rose. Thou art in the sun and the stars. Salutations unto Thee, O Destroyer of the cycle of births and deaths! Salutations unto Thee, O Bestower of Bliss and immortality!

O sweet Lord! May I be free from the bonds of Death. May I never again forget my immortal nature. May I be able to look upon all with equal vision. May I attain the Supreme Seat of Brahman. May I be free from impurity and sin. May I know my real essential nature.

Adorations to the Supreme Being who dwells in the hearts of all beings, who is in the fire and water who is in the plants, herbs and trees, who is in the stones, bricks and iron-bars and who has pervaded the whole universe.

I bow to Thee, O Secret of secrets! I bow to Thee, O Indweller of our hearts! I bow to Thee, O Silent Witness of all activities of all minds! I bow to Thee, O Inner Ruler of all beings! I bow to Thee, O Thread-Soul who connects all beings, who pervades and permeates and interpenetrates all things of this universe!

Salutations to Thee, the Supreme Lord. Thou art without beginning and end. Thou art the flower; Thou art the bee; Thou art woman; Thou art man; Thou art the sea; Thou art the waves; Thou art the old man tottering with a stick; Thou art the saint; and Thou art the rogue.

Thou art Light Divine. Thou art Light of Knowledge. Thou art the Dispeller of darkness. Thou art the Supreme Guru. Thou art beyond the reach of mind and speech. Thou art beyond any kind of limitation. Thou art the Oversoul. Thou art the Self of this universe.

Thou art Self-luminous. Thou art without parts, without actions, without limbs, without any taint of fault, without birth and death. Thou art our Father, Mother, Brother, Friend, Guru, Relative and sole Refuge. Thou art the embodiment of Peace, Bliss, Knowledge, Power, Strength and Beauty.

O All-merciful Lord! Through Thy Grace, may I realise Truth. May I always entertain sublime thoughts. May I realise myself as the Light Divine. May I behold the one sweet immortal Self in all beings. May I realise Brahman with pure understanding.

May that Light of lights ever guide me. May He cleanse my mind of all impurities. May He inspire me. May He bestow on me Power, Courage and Strength. May He remove the veil in the mind. May He remove all obstacles in the Spiritual Path. May He make my life happy and fruitful. I bow to Thee O Lord of lords, O God of gods, O Deva of devas, O Brahman of the Upanishads, the Support for Maya and Isvara, the Supreme Bridge to Immortality!

Om Peace! Peace! Peace!

Swami Sivananda.

As we all already know, our mothers are our first Gurus, they are the most honorable and the motherly love on this earth is the personification of God himself .

MAATRUSTAVANAM- by swami tejomayanandaji

its in sanskrit or hindi, but I cannot use devanagari here, therefore I will post its translation... Also, I confess, I was very young when I came to this country(U.S.A) and I lost my ability to read hindi - accurately, therefore.. please bear with this fool :( (me)

MAATRUSTAVANAM

By mother's blessings alone men become worshipful in this world and happy in the other world.

You maintained me in the womb and nourished me on your milk.

In my childhood being attached to toys I didn't heed your words.

I had no interest in learning but you created that in me and developed my intellect.

Even though child's actions cause much pain, you looked upon them as the source of joy.

Whenever I am sick you nurse me day and night.

How can I ever forget all that is done by you with so much affection.

You always see my virtues, but how came you never see my vices?

This large-heartedness exists only in you and it is not seen anywhere else in the world.

Relatives and friends are easy to find in the world but it is indeed difficult to get a mother like you.

I have heard, "be devoted to mother as God", and I do follow the same.

He who sees God in his own mother he alone sees him everywhere as well.

Hence , Now, I worship and salute you; sing your glories and serve your feet.

O mother! I remain ever indebted to you. May my devotion to you be firm and deep.

O mother! I remain ever prostrated before you. Give me gladly all your blessings.
