A brilliant HBO series by David Simon, creator of Homicide: Life on the Street. I never saw Homicide, but after glowing reviews from Charlie Brooker I decided to download The Wire. It's a US police crime drama about a wiretap and a drug gang in Baltimore and it's excellent! Unlike any US TV series I've ever seen. Incredibly intricate, deep and well scripted. The whole series is structured like a Shakespearean drama with moral complexity and themes and subplots.
The first series is 13 hours long, each episode runs to an hour (with no adverts!) but it's well worth the investment. Very highly recommended.
Did anyone see Homicide Life on the Street?
