actually yes (I take it you have not seen many american movies)

When you want to join you have to pledge, meaning they selct you to go through hell to get into the franternity or sorority, the freshman (1styear) say they want to join, and are then "hazed" meaning they have to do all of these degrading and often dangerous things, like drink 200 beers between 4 of them, or *true story* be shot at with bb guns while they set up for an outdoor party, like this former friend i had from high school did. Once you go through the finale of the hell, literally called "hell week" you are in.

this friend i was talking about went to my college as well, and pledged the frat/got shot at, and was whining to me about it, a few weeks later he says "now I understand why they did that to me, and I'm going to do the same to the pledges next year"

We stopped being friends, and he had to drop out of school a year later because he did too much coke,


one interesting note is that there are different types of frats, for instance, nerdy frats, christian frats, etc, but the only ones that matter are the popular frats, and these are national organizations....buy your way into your clique, meet your mate

a life changing moment for me happened when i was at a party around ohio state university at age 18 and a homeless guy wandered up. i talked to him, as i am interested in people's stories...turns out he had been beaten by a group af frat guys a week earler...kind of ironic because he was a vietnam vet, and these are the allegedly all american patriotic kids

i don't think you'd have joined like i didn't....its legal, and not all are bad people of course...but the ones that were willingly jumped into a stereotype of a preppy snob.

luckliy they were not nearly the majority at my school...just an elitist sect that didn't interact with the rest of the students.

My last boyfriend was in a frat for a year. He quit school for a year and didn't have money to pay the dues to keep his spot, so he left the frat. I've looked one of their "sacred books" over from cover to cover and they're nothing special, just the history and a bunch of blah. Apparently no one but members of that frat are supposed to even touch that book, lol. But Doug wasn't a typical frat boy, he dated me afterall, lol. But he never has been exactly "preppy" or anything, nor anything I'd associate with the frat life, except maybe an alcoholic. Heh. Anyway...he's the only contact I've ever had with anyone from a frat or a sorority...I don't exactly like hanging out with snobs, you know?

I'd say she was about right.

When this girl was explaining to me how one exactly gets into a sorority, it sounded so wrong to me. You basically have to get them to like you, talk about selling yourself out.
