The show that I remember watching back in the 70's was and still is my all time fav. "All in The Family" is the best TV series to ever hit the airwaves IMO.

At the time, the early 70's, it pushed the envelope to the limits of network TV.

This is the ultimate classic TV. Nothing was like it at all. The first few original episodes had a disclaimer at the beginning which was also a first.

That was all before the politically correct era when America was liberal and vibrant and people were free to talk about controversial issues openly. Interesting times.

Today, the discussions never get to the issues. It's alway the tabloid fluff 'events surrounding the issue'. :)

Norman Lear was on CSPAN a couple years ago and discussed that show at length. It was nearly cancelled because it debuted in the spring and the ratings were poor. CBS gave it one more chance the following fall and it took off like a rocket.

Many spin-offs too, like Maude, Jeffersons, Good Times (the maid from Maude, Florida), etc. Even the smart-mouth maid from the Jeffersons had her own show for a while. :)

I really liked this show and I think to this day it still carries powerful messages. I also liked the spin-offs but I don't think they had the same oomph All in the Family had. Also I loved how dynamic and deep the characters were.

This is definitely my favorite TV show ever. I like other things like Will & Grace and Green Acres, but this show...I can't even explain the impact it has had on my life. I've grown up watching the re-runs and have learned so much from it. And isn't it ironic that Carroll O'Connor was EXTREMELY liberal? Rob Reiner said that Carroll was even more liberal than he was.

The first three seasons were really gold; the other seasons (minus the one where Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers left the show) were also great, but the first three years of the show were hilarious and touching. They seemed to tackle every issue and problem in the world.
