View Full Version : Yin: All Police Are Bastards

This is an example of a Yin thread, so I'm going to use it to rant about something that makes me angry.

Police. They really get my goat sometimes. And it's not because I've been arrested before, that was my own silly fault. But I hate what they represent. Take demonstrations for example. I hate how insidious the police can be. And not just the examples where they agitate fights from within to undermine the weight of the issue. Every time I've come back from a massive anti-war demonstration, I've been angry to see how the police have blatantly lied about the numbers. I asked a police officer why they did that, and he said that it didn't matter whether there were 100,000 or 2 million on a demonstration, that it's not an issue I should worry about. I argued very strongly back that every single person matters. Each one is a voice and for the police to lie about numbers like that, they are undermining many many people's democratic voices - writing them out of the history books. But he just didn't seem to get it- he was more concerned about Saddam bombing his kids - sure! It's just ridiculous.

I don't really think all police are bastards, of course. I know that under that uniform there is something that's vaguely similar to a human being. They can get a hard time at festivals and the like, when they'd probably much rather be having a good time themselves. But still, despite a few good apples, the majority of police officers I've met have irked me.

It's like they're mini-Hitlers, relishing the enforcement of laws that are, in many cases, unjust. ASBOs for example. Someone was telling me how his son was given an ASBO for starting a fight in a pub. That meant that if he went in a pub in the next year, he would go to prison for a month; which is precisely what happened. Fair enough, arrest someone for starting a fight - but ASBOs turn non criminal activities into a crime. People have even been given ASBOs for anti-war protests. It's disgusting.

What do you think?

So that's an example of a Yin - why not make some Yin threads yourself or, if you're on a high, have a go at a Yang.

I know what you mean. This past summer, I heard a story about how one man was struggling when he was arrested, and since he spat on the ground/cop the cop put a mask on his face. What the cops didn't know is that he had asthma, and could not breathe with the mask on. (Know this from personal experience, I can't wear anything that covers my nose or mouth, and I have fairly bad asthma) When he stopped moving, the cops thought he'd just stop resisting, but when they arrived at the police station about 20 minutes later they realized he'd stopped breathing... and it was too late to do anything about it. How sad is that?... It was over something really petty too... :(

Man, that's awful! There was a case here of a black guy called Christopher Alder, who had suffered a head injury in a fight. He went a bit crazy in hospital, I think, and the police arrested him. When they took him in his hands were cuffed behind his back and, for some reason, he was passed out on the floor with his trousers and pants pulled down. They just left him there, face down, and after a while he stopped breathing. And all the while the police just sat around, laughing, making racist comments and monkey noises. They left him to die. It was all caught on CCTV, and they had a massive cover up over it, right from the top. Eventually it got shown by the BBC and it was really disgraceful behaviour. But still, no one has been charged. Things like that make me really angry. I know we need police, but it's hard to have any confidence in them as an institution....

In my experience, policemen put on their Hitler persona when they put on their uniforms. Off duty, they're usually the best guys in the world - I know a few, but I won't WON'T go near them when they're on duty cause my friends who enjoy having a laugh and a drink turn into cops that give me this look of "we're gonna fuck you up REAL GOOD, ya dirty hippy".

Yeah I can imagine that might be the case. I think its a psychological effect of the collective responsibility and individual unaccountability that a uniform confers. Not only does it act as a symbol of power and authority, but because everyone is the same, an individual acting within a powerful and dangerous group can hope to get away with a lot more....

The Secret Policeman is another scary documentary. It's the one where they show how racist some people within the pigstye are, and there's one person putting on a KKK hood and shit like that. And at the end of it, when Channel 4, I think it was, told everyone about it, the police tried to charge them for damaging a police uniform when they put the hidden camera in....

The Clash - 'The Clampdown'

What are we gonna do now?
Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a jew?
cause theyre working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!
When were working for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers

The judge said five to ten-but I say double that again
Im not working for the clampdown
No man born with a living soul
Can be working for the clampdown
Kick over the wall cause governments to fall
How can you refuse it?
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
Dyou know that you can use it?

The voices in your head are calling
Stop wasting your time, theres nothing coming
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You dont owe nothing, so boy get runnin
Its the best years of your life they want to steal

You grow up and you calm down
Youre working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown
Youre working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
You made your first kill now

In these days of evil presidentes
Working for the clampdown
But lately one or two has fully paid their due
For working for the clampdown
But ha! gitalong! gitalong!

And Ive given away no secrets
Whos barmy now?
