Can anybody provide me with any links to pages containing a relatively detailed history of how the "beat generation" came to be?

The best is Skips book Hippies A to Z. It's out of print but I scored a copy on E Bay.
But the koolest thing is he made it available here
Go to the home page here and you can read it on line free.

Actually, go to ebay or abebooks.com and look for a book called "memory babe" by Gerald Nicosia. it is the most detailed biography about Jack Kerouac but it also tells the story of how he and the beat generation formed. By the way, I assume when you say beat generation you are meaning Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Neal Cassady and the man who got it started, Hal Chase...
