a moving but at times hard hitting movie, a woman who after being married for 25 years has to cope with the fact that her husband wants a gender reassignment opperation.
this film deals with the trails of how children cope with transexual parents, but perhaps the most harrowing thing, how a small town community copes or doesn't cope with something they percieve as different, namely they see it as a threat.
this film is well worth a watch as it's a compasionate and realistic film of all the struggles a person has to go through when they are battling against a society who feels they are abnormal and wrong

Boys Dont Cry is a wonderful movie , the true story of Tina brandon who lived her life as a male, calling herself Brandon teena, who falls in love with a young girl who , at first, doesnt realise tinas true sex, when tina is outted, she is raped, then killed by her girlfriends ex, who the police were slow to pick up to do tinas lifestyle. A gritty true life crime , one that should anger all.

I think boys don't cry is a heart breaking hard hitting movie, my friend (who is transexual) said she wished she had never watched, my other friend said she felt traumertised by the end because you don't find out what happens to the toddler who I think is basically standing over her mothers dead body.
I would liken it to rape, if you know all to well what its like you may not want to have salt rubbed into your wounds a second time by watching a drama about it.
if you haven't got a clue and want to watch something very real, then go for it.
It certainly doesn't 'hollywood' this subject or try and make it nicer and down play it, good film, but I think once was enough

Wow, I didn't know that about boy's don't cry. I've always wanted to see it though.
Do you think RENT belongs on this thread? I loved that movie/play but it doesn't really focus on anything in the movie, besides HIV/AIDS at most.

The Birdcage

I loved this movie. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane play a gay couple whose son decides to marry the daughter of a very conservative US Senator.
Their son convinces them to put up a straight front to meet the girl's parents, but everything falls apart, seeing as they own a cabaret nightclub with Nathan Lane as the star of the show in drag.
Very funny movie.

la cage aux folles? nope. never saw it. you know, i can't really think of any movies i've seen on this subject. i'm an action film person. hyper violence is cathartic for me. i will never ever ever watch boys don't cry. i avoid weepers and heartbreakers like the plague. i've got enough emotional drama to cope with without adding to it.

well, i've seen both birdcage movies, and any number of movies that contained characters along those lines, but i tend to avoid serious, issue-penetrating dramas. i like watching bruce willis blow people up or seagal playing the messiah/hero archetype. i don't have the emotional reservoir full enough for serious movies.

Anybody ever seen the musical La Cage Aux Folles? It's fantastic - very funny and good music as well, especially if you have a Barbra Streisand in you somewhere. :H La Cage is also the origin of 'I Am What I Am'. ;)

A musical following the story of Hansel, a child raised in East Berlin. He meets and falls in love with a sergeant who promises to take him away to a better place. However, they won't be granted departure unless the appear to be a heterosexual couple. "And they know just the doctor to do it".
Thus Hansel becomes Hedwig, wannabe glam-rock star, victim of a failed sex-reassignment surgery, left by all of her loves, and searching for completion and fulfillment.

well i don't know about anyone else, but I'm hoping that this forum will be a growing and learning experince for all of us.
everyone makes mistakes, its an easy enough thing to do unfortuantly, especially in any areas regarding peoples sex, gender and sexuality.
I hope when mistakes are made in here, that people will be treated with patience and compassion, as well as re'educating us, about the right words and langauge to use.
if people aren't treated with respect and patience, we will never learn because we will be too afraid to explore the subjects and issues here for fear of being repriminded by others

well done, samhain. people are often too quick to jump on others for perceived slights. for that reason, very little is ever exchanged, shared or learned.

Hedwig is great fun. :) There's some cracking music in that, too.
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. :D I'll write something about that when my brain's working again.

There's Breakfast On Pluto.... Cillian Murphy is quite good in it, I think.... and the book's a good read as well.

I loved Birdcage and Boys Don't Cry! Excellent films, although the french original version of Birdcage I think is wildly better.

Some other good movies;
Better Than Chocolate, an interesting trans character but beyond that a fun LGBT movie.

Different For Girls
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116102/
Orlando, not really transgendered but gender fluidity, excellent movie
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107756/
Soldier's Girl, I saw this at a trans day of remembrance event at a small local college. Calpernia Addams was there as speaker, very powerful. She said the movie was very accurate right down to some of the dialog, the only thing different is she actually lived in an apartment rather than a trailer park.

saw this the other night, Cillian Murphy is such a good actor and is so convincing in this role and very different to other things he's been in.
also this film manages to deal with some shocking incidents but somehow is uplifting and funny at the same time, for people that dislike disturbing movies, this is very different to 'boys don't cry' it totally gets you thinking but doesn't leave you feeling like you've been put through a mangle at the end
