Ugh! I just saw this guy on TV talking about how you need to find God and make peace will all living creatures. Sounds good, right? Well, as this guy is telling you to accpet peace and love, there is his RIFLE sitting right behind him! Pff, give me a break!
He's also selling some bullshit books and videos on how to be a *man* and still love God... ha! What an idiot! That sure sounds like a true Christian man to me.

that's beautiful. i may not be very good at being a christian, but i love god deeply and dearly. i know some people that put on the nice clothes and go to church then sit and gossip acidly about other parishoners. it's very disheartening. i decided to stop going to church because all the noise from the other people really distracted me from speaking to god.

If all the professing christians in this country truly devoted themselves to the teachings of Christ we would have one of the most peaceful nations on Earth. Am I wrong in saying this?

Nope. I agree.
I also agree that the kinda Christians as described in the original post of this thread bug me too.

Yah I remeber reading once Jesus telling a worshipper in the street that he should pray in private with noone watching to truly pray to god....not in the street where everyone can see how DEVOTED and FAITHFUL he is. This is something I relate to...my rel;ationship is a personal one and I dont need to prove to anyone that God and I talk to each other. I don't need to go out on the street and convert people. I dont need to SAVE anyone. I dont need to show anyone how WELL i can PRAY and how DEVOTED I am because a relationship with God is a personal one and anyone who flaunts it or pushes it on anyone is a hypocrite!!! And should ask the forgiveness of all the people theyve burdened with their self-righteous and demeaning missionary work. "Oh you poor countries you starve because you havent found Jesus" that stuff drives me nuts....Jesus and God have nothing to do with it. You wanna be a Christian...just feed them... you dont need to convince them of anything. Lead by example and if they see the good in that, and they come to you wanting to know more...fine...noone likes to have the WORD shoved down their throat.

Well, the thing that bothered me most about the whole thing was how he was preaching peace but had a gun with him. That's just stupid.
There will always be people trying to convert others. There's not stopping it. I had a kid at school telling everyone they were going to Hell. We aren't bad kids at all, yet he's telling us how we are going to burn. Pff, that stuff makes me mad, but not as mad as this television guy.

One of the vows taken by Franciscan monks is to never carry a weapon of any kind. And back in the 12th century, this was incredibly dangerous. As Christians, we should try to follow their example.

Like I said, we should try to follow their example. Obviously there are some situations that warrant violence. Besides, we're laypeople; we're not bound by any vows. We haven't chosen to make that kind of a promise to God. But if these principles were good enough for St. Francis, then they're good enough for me. Surely you're not suggesting that we should not try to follow in the example of saints?

Well, you see, this was not there for protection. This was there for the sole use of hunting animals. I forgot to mention that the thing was actually filmed inside a hunting cabin of some kind. They showed these guys hunting as well. I don't know, but hunting purely for the joy of watching an innocent animal die doesn't sound like a Christian hobby.
It's not that I think hunting is evil or anything, it just seems weird when associated with religion. I mean, preaching with a gun just seems a little weird if you ask me.

I am a Christian so I guess I can shed some light on misconceptions. All of the Christians I know personally pretty much object to hypocritical televangelists such as Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Benny Hinn, etc. There's only one guy on TV that I really admire and his name is Dr. Charles Stanley. His ministry is based out of Atlanta, Georgia and he's a pretty interesting guy who tells it like it is. Billy Graham is another favorite of mine, though he's not much of a televangelist.
We don't go "flaunting" our personal relationships with God. When a Christian describes his relationship with the Creator, it's just that. It's like a man describing his relationship with his wife.
There are some good books on the Christian faith. One of them is by C.S. Lewis titled "Mere Christianity." As you know, he also wrote a book series titled "The Chronicles of Narnia."
I believe people are turned off by Christianity because of how certain Christians act. Trust me, there will always be a hypocritical Christian. I'm bothered by them as well.
Now I'm not saying I'm perfect. I'm not perfect. No one is perfect except Christ and no one can achieve the perfection of Christ because of our sinful nature.

Yeah, the whole "Chronicles of Narnia" series is based on the Christian faith. C.S. Lewis wrote it for his niece, I think. He was a non-Christian until his friend and colleague, J.R.R. Tolkien, brought him into the faith. You may know Tolkien from his "Lord of the Rings" series, which is also based on the Christian faith.

Exactly.... for example, the nine fruits of the spirit.... (Galations 5:22)
Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self-control
Christ was the only one who posessed all nine of them because he was perfect.

perhaps war is included in killing in your semantics, but when using biblical terms it's better to stick with the general sense of the whole text. sometimes you just DO have to kill. that's not murder. it's all in the motive.

that is very true, i won't argue that. like i said, it's all about what motivations are in you at the time. i come from a long line of military people, though i decided not to join myself, knowing that i can be truly viscious and wanting to avoid the possiblity of going down that road. but not all who kill during war are bad. my father had to kill, but he also smuggled quite a few refugees out of vietnam. don't condemn people for wanting to do something they think is right.

SDA's believe that the cathlic church (it's machinery, it's bureaucracy and pope) to be the beast of revelations. 666 refering to "pontificus maximus" or some such thing on the pope's hat in roman numerals. but as for catholics themselves, there's really not much hatred, but there's a definite desire to bring them over to SDA.

I didn't say the pope was the antichrist. I have already mentioned the characteristics of the antichrist according to the Bible in another post. ( http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=237861&postcount=14)
I said that a pope would most likely be the false prophet. "Looks like a lamb"..
If you look at scripture, The holy roman empire is said to be reformed in the end times. Who has always been the leader of the empire? A pope.
The Catholic church referes to itself as the Mother church. ( "We, the mother church, our opening our arms to all of our daughters to return home".) Revelation 17... woman of the beast, mother of harlots.
The daughter churches of the Catholic church? All of the churches involved in the uniting of religions. The united religions constitution was signed june of 2000.
Uniting of religions: "Pope John Paul II said yesterday that he is willing to seek agreement with other Christian denominations on the future role of the papacy. The pope made his offer in a 115-page encyclical, ‘That They All May Be One,’ which is dedicated to the search for unity among Christian churches that split from each other during the past thousand years… The pope made clear he would not accept a symbolic papacy without teeth and that Rome would have to hold the primary place among Christians. He also said a pope should have the authority to make infallible declarations regarding the basic tenets of faith."
So the pope is pushing for interfaithism. Hmmm, interesting. What else is interesting? this piece that was written. "But, if the Pope ultimately manifests himself in the role of the False Prophet of the Apocalypse, then his eventual headship in the union of all religions, i.e., United Religions (UR), will be his greatest achievement. "And he [the False Prophet] exerciseth all the power of the first beast [the Antichrist] before him, and causeth the Earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed" (Revelation 13:12). (http://whatsaiththescripture.com/Fellowship/Edit_United.Religions.html.htm (http://whatsaiththescripture.com/Fellowship/Edit_United.Religions.html.htm))
841 The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."[330] (http://www.christusrex.org/www1/CDHN/church3.html)
The Catholic church is proclaiming that salvation includes muslims who do not believe that Jesus Christ was the savior? The Catholic church doesn't even follow the plan of salvation according to Jesus (John 3:5) and now they want to tell others that they are saved? Sad....
Revelation 17:4 - The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand filled with abominable things"....
The pope wears a crown, wine is served in a chalic during communion, and priests wear purple while the pope wears scarlet.
This was a good list of comparisons:
Christ said: "My kingdom is not of this world." The Pope conquers cities by force.
Christ had a crown of thorns. The Pope wears a triple diadem.
Christ washed the feet of his disciples. The Pope has his kissed by kings.
Christ paid tribute. The Pope takes it.
Christ fed the sheep. The Pope shears them for his own profit.
Christ was poor. The Pope wishes to be master of the world.
Christ carried on His shoulders the cross. The Pope is carried on the shoulders of his servants in liveries of gold.
Christ despised riches. The Pope has no other passion than for gold.
Christ drove out the merchants from the temple. The Pope welcomes them.
Christ preached peace. The Pope is the torch of war.
Christ was meekness. The Pope is pride personified.
Christ promulgated laws that the Pope tramples underfoot
(http://www.ianpaisley.org/article.asp?ArtKey=pope)
Revelation 17:18 - "the woman you saw is the great city". Rome is often referred to as the great city.
The comparisons are quite interesting.

If you look at scripture, The holy roman empire is said to be reformed in the end times. Who has always been the leader of the empire? A pope. No, the pope has never been the leader of the Empire, any Empire. Rome was headed by the Roman Emperor, the Holy Roman Emperor was headed by a guess what---an emperor--NEVER a pope. The only Political Rule the Pope officially ever possessed was the Papal States and Vatican City/Rome. When the Popes assumed power in Rome, the Western Roman Empire had already fallen to barbarians from the North, but fortunently, converted to Catholicism. Most notably (I said this on another post) was Clovis of the Franks (French) in the 700's I believe.
The Catholic church referes to itself as the Mother church. ( "We, the mother church, our opening our arms to all of our daughters to return home".) Revelation 17... woman of the beast, mother of harlots.
Most historians agree the beast or babylon in Revelation is PAGAN Rome. If you want to go ahead and quote some anti-catholic authors for the sake of arguement, be my guest, and I welcome it. People would be able to see how foolish of an arguement it is.
The daughter churches of the Catholic church? All of the churches involved in the uniting of religions.
So what?! We wouldn't have to be concerned with the unity of all Christians if it were not for Protestant "Reformers". You are part of the problem, yet your complaining about the Pope trying to make ammends with other Christians. And I really don't care about your anti-catholic quotes, you have made up your mind about the Catholic Church, and I have made up mine, but I am going to expain myself in the least biased way possible.
The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand filled with abominable things"....
The pope wears a crown, wine is served in a chalic during communion, and priests wear purple while the pope wears scarlet.
HOW IGNORANT AND CLOSE MINDED ARE YOU? Are you kidding me? Purple and red are not the dominant colors of Catholic clerical vestments. White is. All priests wear white (including bishops and cardinals when they are saying Mass)—even the pope does so. Purple is for royalty and red for the blood of Christian martyrs. I like how, Epiphany, you forgot to mention the purple and scarlet of the Whore are contrasted with the white of the New Jerusalem, the Bride of Christ (Rev. 19:8).--Ie--this could be The Catholic Church or New Jersualem, and it also means that Apostate Jerusalem could be the whore as well.
HERE IS THE LIST OF TERRIBLE COMPARISONS:
Christ said: "My kingdom is not of this world." The Pope conquers cities by force.
Are you kidding? The Popes RARELY conquered anything, and was hundreds of years ago, and most of it was on the Italian Peninsula. What about all the Protestant Kingdoms that conquered whole countries and places, heck England invaded North America! THAT MUST MEAN PRINCE CHARLES COULD BE THE ANTI-CHRIST!!!
Christ had a crown of thorns. The Pope wears a triple diadem. The Royals of England and Scandinavia wear crowns too, they are just as likely as canidates then, using your theory.
Christ washed the feet of his disciples. The Pope has his kissed by kings.
It's a sign of respect.
The problem is that, regardless of what it had in the past, the modern Vatican is not fantastically wealthy. In fact, it has run a budget deficit in most recent years and has an annual budget only around the size of that of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Furthermore, wealth was much more in character with pagan Rome or apostate Jerusalem, both key economic centers.
Christ preached peace. The Pope is the torch of war.
Christ was meekness. The Pope is pride personified.
Christ promulgated laws that the Pope tramples underfoot
That is an unsubstanitate d opinion, no proof whatsoever.
