Yes, yes, I am aware that I made a post about this like a year ago, but I haven't contributed anything on this forum in a while, so...Lets make a list of movies about gays guys and lesbians!
Lesbians:
*Chasing Amy (sucked ass, she wasn't really a lesbian)
*Gia (not focussed on the lesbian thing, but its in there. Plus, ANJELINA JOLIE plays a lesbian! Yes yes:))
*If these walls could talk
*Better than chocolate
*But I'm a cheerleader
*Monster (again, not focussing on the whole issue of being a lesbian, but hey!)
Gays boys:
All I can really think of is *Sugar Sugar
Lanze posted this excellent link to a list of movies on another thread, check it out (just editing it in here then people have it)

Gigli :D
And I guess Luarel Canyon
The reason there aren't so many gay movies is pretty obvious; there's more of a market for a movie about lesbians than dutty fags. It's not how it should be, it's just how it is.

Isn't "Alexander" supposed to have gay scened in it, considering that he WAS bisexual back then?
Apparently, he had a relationship with his best friend...I read this in an article.
Other than that, there's this really weird and fucked up gay movie called "LIE" (Long Island Expressway), and they kinda portrayed gay guys as either perverted or fucked up

To be fair, "Troy" should have gay scenes. But what can you do?
There must be more. The only one I could think of that had a significant gay character (i.e. one with a discernable personality) is "As Good As It Gets".

I saw Alexander yesterday afternoon, very much longer than I would like (almost 3 hours), but VERY good. I was so angry, I was waiting for Jared Leto and Colin Farrell to kiss, but they didn't. Just a lot of deep hugs and meaningful looks, and then Colin says once "Stay with me tonight" to him, but aside from that it only hints at gayness:(Oh! Wait! Colin kisses and Indian guy on the lips! That was kind of hot...

Beautiful Thing (An Urban Fairytale) - probably one of the sweetest movies about young gay boys that I've ever seen. It's a fucking awesome movie. Made in the mid 90's with a soundtrack by Mama Cass... look it up, find it somewhere, its amazing.
Get Real - Fucking funny, fucking suave movie about a young gay guy and how he finds out that the big popular guy at school is gay as well and the ensuing shenanigans. Funny, but confronts the issues of coming out and the realities of it very well.
The Incredibly True Story of Two Girls In Love - its been mentioned before on this site. It's a funny, great movie. The title kinda says it all, really.

it's about three couples of lesbians from different generations, one couple from the 50s another from the 70s and the last one from 2000s.
I love the chicks from the 70s...check out the butch girl, she's soooo cute!

That's part of what I like about it; it's better than yet another self-absorbed film about lesbian/gay relationships just being great, because it's actually involving. The characters are well-fleshed out (I'm not just talking about the one who isn't Kate Winslet, lol), and if you don't like that, there's some cool special effects.
Personally I prefer movies like that to "gay movies". It's better when you can have a gay character with a personality in a movie with a plot.

Hmm, I was just reminded of the movie, "Ma vie en Rose," or, in English - My Life In Pink. It's not about blatantly gay characters, rather a cross-dressing little boy, so it does confront similar issues. It's quite good, anyway.
WalrusKeeper
12-01-2004, 05:55 PM
'Ma Vie En Rose' is cute and sweet, and it's innocent. Innocence is almost non-existent among gay films - it's incredibly refreshing to watch a film that isn't part of today's oversexualised culture. I dunno, most of the time if a film is specifically 'gay-themed' it gives me a headache with it's inanity.

You get twee idealistic relationship movies or the kind that Deal With Issues, or on the flipside you get stuff like Queer As Folk (not a movie, but you know.) that view everything through a veneer of superficiality that's almost as sickening. I'm sure "straight" movies don't have this problem. Or maybe they do.
I'll bring up "The Doom Generation", described as a homosexual road movie, at this point. There's not a great deal of gayness in it, and it's pretty crap, but meh.

The only "gay" movie I've ever really seen is But I'm a Cheerleader. There was this really good flick on sundance about this asian guy and this white guy in SF, and the asian guy needed a wife so he could stay in the states, or something like that. So his parents are there visiting and he's pretending to be strait while his b/f has to deal with it. It was kinda like a drama, pretty good.

Ahhh, I just re-watched Rocky Horror for the first time in years. Damn. I love that film.
My mates are animation students, and sent me disks filled with Japanese Anime. It's been awesome watching 'Revolutionary Girl Utena' - for some reason watching two cartoon girls seemingly falling in love melts my big farmboy heart.

high art - a movie about a skinny lesbian junkie (ally sheedy, the cute spaz from the breakfast club) who seduces a straight girl.

Oliver Stone's "Alkexander" is a fab movie. The bisexual angle is handled with neither nuance nor apology. OS even worked in the fact that Roxanne was jealous of Hephaestion, a fact reproted by few historians of the time.

some of the best movies that have been mentioned here are Kissing Jessica Stein (the movie that saw my straight, male friend declare his new ambition to be a lesbian). I just love the refreshing yet lovely realism of it :)
For less sweet, more cynical 'romance' The Rules of Attraction is quite..interesting.
Beautiful Thing is well, beautiful. I adore it.
And I thought The Hours could fit in here as well.

If you guys like comedy I recomend Ellen Degeners, or Magaret Cho, or Out Comedy 2 (?), Elvira Kurt is also a great lesbian comic.
French Twist - Good movie
The Closet - again haven't seen it yet
Amiee and Jaguar - again haven't seen it yet

Okay you guys, you got to comment, what is your Favorite Gay Themed Movie? Yea we get it....Broke Back Mountain...yea yea yea.
Gimme something better than that.
My personal favorite is "Beautiful Thing".
These two straight teen boys who live in adjacent London apartments bunk up together because one has been kicked out of his flat by his single parent dad. After a GREAT message scene, they progressively start to fall for each other. The whole movie culminates in a slow dance in the middle of the street to the tune of "Dream a little dream of me"-by the Mamas and The Papas, a decidedly appropriate song considering this is the "Hip Forums". In fact the ENTIRE sound track is The Mamas and the Papas. This is owing to the fact that one of the boys' mutual friends, a black teen female, is obsessed with Mama Cass.
The Films greatest goodie is the makeout in the park scene to the tune of "Make your own kind of music".

It's a great movie. Have you seen "Gay Sex in the 70s"? It's a documentary, and it's really good even if some of it is a bit depressing. My dad also saw it, and he said he remembered a lot of that stuff.

Anyone seen Boys Dont Cry?
I find that movie so upsetting.
oh bound, I love it!
I like movies and dramas about gay females, and this is also a very clever thriller, made by the same people who later did the matrix, however this is much better

It's a columbine throw-off. I don't know if it was meant to be a documentary or what, but yeah, the guys kiss and get in the shower together before going to shoot up the school.

I suppose.
I think that it's a real crappy thing to throw into that movie though. The real guys were never gay (not that I know of anyway), and the fact that they potrayed them as gay in this movie kinda gives the wrong impression. It's like saying, "gay people are angry killers." I don't know.......just a thought I had.

I saw it when it first came out on DVD and loved it. There's also a book version which ends a little differently and is definitely worth the read.
