I saw a girl's eye on a guy
on Broadway, under streetlights,
at the height of a heat wave.
She held her heartache high
like you on that Friday night,
out back, tears finding fireflies.
He was hooked, reeling wild
in the wake of her recognition.
I couldn't help but listen in,
her face looked like yours,
it’s so easy to pretend.
I saw you across the room,
your hair tied back, icicle eyes
wide and locked onto mine.
I said, I saw you one more time
on a sidewalk, around July,
lost in looking at another
so, who am I?
One more in the millions
cast from a velvet bag:
the archer aimed at you
in moonlight blue and bodied
at a summer after party;
I could draw back, but honestly
a net would wrap around us
and cut into our skin
cos our heart's are heavy things
removed from all things heavenly.
The past looms in uncertainty;
it's a hard destiny to overcome,
but if you find it clearing,
I'll find the signs.
Until then… until then…
on Broadway, under streetlights,
at the height of a heat wave.
She held her heartache high
like you on that Friday night,
out back, tears finding fireflies.
He was hooked, reeling wild
in the wake of her recognition.
