Walter Pater taught at Oxford University and one of his students was Oscar Wilde. In a book called "The Renaissance" Pater wrote a Hedonist tract into the conclusion of the book and was almost Barred from teaching as it was deemed a dangerous philosophy by the Victorians - Its a beautiful imagery he presents and would urge anyone to read it. I have posted a link below this paragraph to the work. It really was a seminal work
of modern literature and the conclusion is only 4 pages long it will take almost no time to read but may cause you to think about it forever - it certainly had that impact on me
I hope you like it

To burn always with this hard, gemlike flame, to maintain this
ecstasy, is success in life. In a sense it might even be said that
our failure is to form habits: for, after all, habit is relative to a
[237] stereotyped world, and meantime it is only the roughness of
the eye that makes any two persons, things, situations, seem
alike.
