As a splinter discussion from The promotion of vegetarianism (http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178121)
I am far less worried about the chocolate companies than I am the pharmaceutical cartels who push their poison for ailments that don't even exist. I have to agree. A case in point are statin class medications that supposidly extend peoples' lives by reducing cholesterol levels in the blood. What these statin class medications do block the producion of co-enzyme 10. In all the discussions I have with various people, nobody has ever been able to prove rather than effect. Even if you did manage to reduce your cholesterol levels right down, you would increase your chances of contracting cancer.
Anyway statin class medications cost very little to make but are charged at huge mark ups. In Australia the cost is capped @ $28/month, the difference being subsisdised by the Federal Govenment. The true cost can be up to $100/month. People are driven by fear to take such medications.

The entire basis for the belief in the demonistion of cholesterol is experiments on rabbits by nutty Russian scientists. What they did was to heat up animals fat to a very high temperature and thenm add it to rabbit food. A few days later the rabbits were killed and plaques of cholesterol were found in the arteries. This was overwhealming proof for some people.
