it has wormwood in it which is a phyco active ingrediant which works alot like THC in your brain, its suppose to make you real creative and its a mild hallucagin, its what van gohe (spelling?) drank before he painted alot of his pictures and what not supposvly, also what he drank the night he cut his ear off, or something like that
and yes its green and glows under blacklights :D
and its 140 proof.....biznitch

you should also be aware that wormwood is a powerful neurotoxin. it is very toxic to the nervous system! be aware. moderation is the key. use it, if you will, as a teacher, not as an habit.

Haha, right on... I love expensive booze. Once one of my friends pulled off some mad credit card fraud, and ordered so much expensive crap, we ended up bonging crystal.

It's funny, cuz here in Portugal absinth is suposedly illegal. But hey!, just last week I found more than one bottle of postuguease absinth! And no, it wasn't liqueur! haha...
BTW, I have the plant!! ^^ Who knows if i wont do my own absinth ^^

if it tastes like bitter licorice then it's real. the wormwood makes it bitter and tthe anise makes it taste like licorice.

oh yeah and heat makes the active ingerdient in wormwood (thujone) stronger, so light it on fire for like 10 seconds.

I'm pretty sure that heat does not make the thujone stronger.
It's the sugar that's set on fire, traditionally (after being dipped in the absinthe and set on a slotted spoon which is held over the drink), in order to carmalize it enough so that it runs down into the drink.
I may be wrong, but that's just what I read from several places.

My three friends and i found a bottle of Czech Absinth in Red Deer,AB, and decided to give it a whirl. It turns out (according to Maxim) that we did it mostly right, except we finished a two-six in under two hours. Evidently you are supposed to only do two or three drinks at a time, or else the effects of the alcohol superscede the wormwood. Whoops! That explains why I got the spins instead of hallucinations.......but it was the wierdest drunk I've ever had....

well first, lodui, dont assume its fake. if its coming from a company in europe its msot probably real.
absinth was also made legal in many countries in teh 90's, but with a restricted amount of thujone
erowid proposes a good theory:
the amount of thujone in teh drink is not enough to do waht it did to the artists of the 18th with a drinking session but heavy drinkngin causes the chemical to build up.
id like to try it.. but if it acts the same as marijuana receptors, i can jsut smoke weed? lol when i get the money ill go get some. u can buy it in some few bottle shops here in sydney.
But jsut remember that a 50cl bottle is like a 1 litre bottle of normal spirits, alchohol wise, so dont drink too much or yull get alchohol poisoning really easy.

I bought a 1L bottle for my cousin, as a gift. I only tasted the stuff, it's surprisingly... usual. Yeah, like bitter anise liquor (it's still better than several other kind of spirits). It was a gift so i wasn't supposed to drink it to try to get the effects.
When i'm 18 and i move to my appartment i'm gonna really try the stuff, but it's not a "big" thing though, just the myth surrounding it.

hey! i just brought back 3 nice sized bottles from israel. i haven't gotten into them yet, thing have been hectic just moving into the dorms and starting classes.
my question is man... i hear about these neurotoxins alot... and even got pretty into stuff that i now know is HORRRRRRIBLE with all that neuro damage... i found myself not at my peek anymore, ya know? so i stopped doing what i was doing, and months/year later i still feel a little disconnected. now... with 3 bottles of this funk, what would you consider some safe moderation. should i maybe give a bottle to a friend, maybe even 2... i'm all down with enducing the chill, but i cherish my neurowhatevers more then a little trip.

I was just reading something about absinth and from what I've read, the only place in europe that it's actually going to be absinth is going to be eastern europe/former soviet states... Most of the time it won't make it through American customs, but even if it does a real lot of the time it's just Green Vodka with VERY little thjuone or however you spell it..... I don't know if anyone here has a membership to the Somethingawful.com forums, but they have a HUUUGE thread about it, a ton of people were ordering from site/ Czech, and basically got ripped off (green vodka, and sometimes it just had a tiny bit of thjrunone or whatever the fuck that is)

Oh PLEEEAAZZ... Neurodamage is bullshit. The only thing is that thujone is believed to be carcinogenic at high dose, that's why they play it safe in EU (limited concentration).
Neurotoxicity is part of the myth that the writer (whatever is name was) got crazy on the stuff, in fact he had "naturally" a brain tumor and the alcohol didn't help. BTW alcohol is neurotoxic (it's toxic for everything anyway), you're gonna waste more braincell on it than you could ever do with thujone.
It's funny how people are scared of a couple mg of tannin but *of course* alcohol is just fine.

I don't think thujone's an issue in today's absinthe; the levels are miniscule compared to that which was served back in bohemia (an ear-severing 250-300 mg/kg then, compared to a quiescent 1-20 mg/kg today) However, Swiss La Bleue claims something like 70mg. It's like $200 a bottle though, really hard to find (bless friends with rich parents), but after only one drink (and one thin joint) I was my avatar, the trees were my home and clothes were not welcome. On the down side, one lass had to have her stomach pumped.
In Canada I've only found Hills absinthe, and it tastes absolutely terrible, like window-cleaner terrible. One part Hills with 5,6 or 7 parts water, with or without sugar and it's still crap. Sebor is marginally better, but there's floaty bits in it, herbs they say... doesn't matter, I don't like floaty bits in my drink. Un Emile (40 quid) is great, but LaFee, in my opinion, is just as good and easier to find: you can buy it at Tesco for about 30 quid.
If you're curious about the taste, try Pernod: it's cheap, you get the fancy louche effect, and it tastes better then Hills and Sebor for sure.
I heard someone say they found absinthe in Australia... could you tell me where please, I have so far been unlucky.

Thujone-containing absinthe is legal to possess and drink in the US, but illegal to buy within the US; it IS legal to import from other countries, though...so Customs isn't an issue here. ;)

for years it has been posible to buy "absinthe" in supermarkets in different european countrys though that was only colored "eau de vie" a clear rip-off.
though i 'm not entirely sure of the details it has also been possible to find some "real" absinthe in different countrys including france only the level of thujone were restricted and were insignificant.
someone here said that the level of thujone today where insignificant compared to those of "the days" that s actually inacurate , the claimed 260mg/l comes form a mistake done a long time ago , when it was impossible to distinguish thujone from other related compounds and is actually impossible to attain given the amount of wormwood used to produced absinthe, it is usually accepted that the level were closer to 30/40mg/l at the very maximum, EU as a max level of 10mg/l .
And to bring a good news, Swiss as just (july 2004) made absinthe legal again
Therefore...

Yeah, that's the way you do it. If you've seen the movie "From Hell" then you can watch Johnny Depp get down with some absinth... and some opium.
If there's a drug that'll rot your brain, it's absinth.

I can buy absinthe at any LCBO in Ontario, but I've got a feeling that the thujon levels have been tapered down. Only had the real stuff once; girlfriend at the time brought some home from the Czech Republic :sunglasse

Any absinth that is manufactured today, has in NO WAY enough wormwood to make you halucinate like the shit van gough drank. any one who says otherwise is full of shit. Nowadays, saddly, absinth will only make you really pissed, and if you drink enough, delerious and sick!:p
The only absinth around today that is halucinogenic, is the shit you mite find hidden away in some ancient attick, in a forgotten-about dusty old chest in some old town house in europe, most likely france. Oh yeah, just like the bottle my grandad left to me in his will two weeks ago! I'm drinkin it right now!! :D

Actually, Staroplzenecky's King of Spirts Gold contains 300 mg thujone content (30x greater than allowed by EU law!), which would be the proper dosage of a "hallucinogenic" experience. However, my point is that even when such a dose is consumed, no hallucinogenic activity is noted; merely GABA-antagonistic qualities that negate the depressant effects of the alcohol. ;)

It's NO BIG DEAL! We currently have 7 bottles of different varieties in our liquor collection. I have never had ANY kind of trippy affect off the stuff. My husband orders it from Europe and we've never had customs intercept it. The reason it was outlawed in the first place is because they were putting all kinds of toxic additives in it for various reasons. There was no regulation so people were just dumping all inds of crazy stuff in there. Made some people go mad and pissed off peoples Victorian sensibilitys. It's pretty much a holdover from another era, the stuff they make now is harmless. I will say the ritual is fun. Buy the glasses and spoons and fancy sugar and have a blast.
