this amazing lightning storm just came up, and so we sat on the porch to watch. the sky sparked continuously an electric blue, and no thunder followed, leaving us with an awareness of silence. this is what it produced. i hope you enjoy!

We sat on the grass and watched lightning
Explode across the heavens.
Silent,
But for the singing of crickets
And the mournful trill of secadas
In search of a mate...
Twenty years, hidden away
In the cool, dark recesses of Earth's flesh,
Only now to emerge,
To shed their skins, mate, and then,
To die.
The wamr breeze of summer's beginning
Became the cool wind of spring's end,
And still, the lightning when on,
Setting the night afire
Without sound...
No thunder shook up from the earth
To echo within our chests,
Nor to break across the skies
In a primal growl of old power,
Ancient magick at its most terrible.
We were absobed that night
By the firelight of Titans,
Holding court with the gods in silence,
With only the high cry of secadas
To fill our hearts with sound.

thunderous poetry... like a lightening's strike, I felt the power of the storm and the emotions you pen.

I like how you conveyed your emotions using such thunderous and hard-hitting language while retaining the honesty and spontaneity.. nice work

Beautiful. Round here we call that heat lightning, though I think it's just lightning too far away to hear the thunder. Regardless, it is fun to watch, just like this poem was fun to read. :)

(oh, but it's spelled "cicadas").
