Canned Heat

I saw these guys on July 2nd at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland. The drummer is the only original member of Canned Heat, but nonetheless they were a really tight band and I highly recommend them if you get the chance to see them.

Stories? Well the gig only lasted an hour, that's all the time bands are allotted at the Blues Festival. It was general admission of course, that's why I was able to get so close to take that picture. There were a lot of old hippies there to "Boogie with Canned Heat" as the sign says, myself included.

I can't believe that Canned Heat is still rocking. Last time I saw them was in a cow pasture in Bethel, NY 1969 with a slew of other bands and approximately 300,000 beautiful people. Great pic, by the way. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

As I said, the drummer is the only original member, so basically they're just another nostalgia circuit band trying to cash in. Did you know Big Brother & The Holding Company is touring now, and without a female singer? That's pathetic!

That is a sad situation concerning the Big Brother and Holding Company.It is just like John Kay doing the tour curcuit as Steppenwolf.Or the rebirthing of the Doors,too many old timers trying to cash in on the names of ages gone bye.

Haven't seen them play since the free Sunday's in Topanga Canyon. Continued to that those now & then after they became ' big'. They lived down the street from where I lived for awhile. Seemed to always be working on their cycles.
Also feel uncomfortable w/ 1 guy using the band's name; but guess if others objected doubt that it wuld be allowed. john

I have nothing against the "nostalgia circuit", AS LONG AS 1) the ratio of original members is high and 2) that they are still capable of capturing the sound of their original hits. I saw Manfred Mann a few months ago (now called "The Manfreds"). I won't go into how I was the only person there under 50 (I went with my parents), but anyway they had about 3 or 4 original members in the band and the instrumentation sucked. All the feeling and atmosphere of the songs was missing. Weak as piss. Paul Jones' voice (and looks) wasn't a day past 1965 but apart from that they were crap. I also went and saw "The Drifters" a few weeks before that... I put their name in inverted commas because NO-ONE was an original!

I may go and see Canned Heat if they tour here just for curiosity's sake, and have Fito sign my book, but apart from that I have no interest.

John Cox... before Bob Hite died he signed the rights to the name over to Fito so that's why he's in charge. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me where they lived... I want to make a pilgrimage to where Alan Wilson died when I get to the US in the near future. If you would prefer we can do it over the PMs.

I saw Canned Heat in the summer of 1975 in Colorado Springs, CO. They actually screwed up a couple of songs. But, it was still a lot of fun. Quicksilver Messenger Service and Ike and Tina Turner were also on the bill.

Canned Heat had been to Germany in August and I saw them playing in Nürnberg.
Even just the drummer was original it was a great boogie night and I enjoyed it! I really couldn`t understand, that they got bad criticsm in the lokal newspaper!

Don`t forget to boogie!!!

I was together with heaven-sanfrancisco at this concert and I enjoyed it nearly the same way, as 30 years ago. The writer of this newspaper seemed to be very young and bitched, that the music was old fashioned and seemed being not changed in thirty years. I think, Fito had a lucky hand, by choosing the other members of the band, even the new singer manages it, to reach Bob Hite's high pitch, thus the band sounds rather original.

I saw them at Blues Alley (Georgetown) in 1991. Not only was Fito the only one left from at least the "Boogie" album (I don't know if he was on "Canned Heat," their first, the one with them "eating" out of a Sterno can) -- but he had both the Bear's and the Blind Owl's voices down pat! (Alan Wilson died in 1970, around the same time as Hendrix and Joplin; Bob Hite died later in the 70's, I think.)

Harvey Mandel, whom I first heard on Charlie Musselwhite's debut "Stand Back!" album, was the lead guitarist at that time, which made up for the missing "Sunflower" Vestine. (Anyone know if he's still around? I know his hometown was Takoma Park, MD.) I don't know the name of the guy who played harp, but as I remember, he was relatively young and blond-haired, and I don't think it's the same guy in this picture.

I was one of the people who helped start a chant of "Boogie! Boogie! Boogie!" and was pleased to hear them take the request.

I thought Phlo & Eddie were former Turtles. They appeared in Zappa's "200 Motels" in 1974.

Saw Canned Heat a few months ago.Great show.Highlighted when Eric Burdon came out of the audience and joined in for a set.As far as a cover band it's all John Lee Hooker and they'll be the first to tell you.
