The return to London of music commercial radio on 16th October 1973 with 'Capital Radio':

As was predicted by Kenny Everett on 14th August 1967 on 'Radio London':- commercial radio returned once again -on land .
It was the on the 16th October 1973 that London's first 'legal' music commercial radio station was launched.

I remember listening to 'Capital Radio' throughout the mid to late 1970s.
In 1976 I went with a schoolfriend to 'Euston Tower' to buy The Capital Radio Funbook & came back with a pile of free disc jockey stickers.

I remeber that Kenny Everett was on Saturday lunchtimes.Roger Scott was on tea-times with the Capital Radio pop chart that was phoned in by listeners.Graham Dene hosted the breakfast show & Nicky Horne was the late night 'prog-rock' D.J.

'Capital Radio' was more 'fun' than the BBC output & seemed more relevant to Londoners with 'phone-in' programmes & local news issues.

For free download of some original taped programme extracts & jingles from the 1970s.

Please click on (then scroll down):

Hearing these programme snippets & jingles I was instantly returned to the London of the 1970s.

Happy listening!.:)

"movin to montana soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon"

frank zappa, robert crumb, jefferson airplane, lavalamps, the pill, "all we are saying, is give peace a chance", "war is unhealthy for children and other living things","u.f.o.'s are real, it's the airforce that doesn't exist",freebees and turn ons, making out in the city park in broad daylight,"streakin at the streaker's ball", jon pertwe's doctor right on, tom baker was alright too, but pertwe really, though i didn't get to find out about the doctor until pbs started buying dr who reruns from lionheart in the 80s, living in the u.s. as i was and still am.

1970 i was IN the airforce (that's how i got out of being sent to viet nam). i remember watching the prisoner, and seeing an uncut version of barbarella in the movie house on base. (mid 71 i got an early and fully honorable discharge).

didn't smoke my first doobie until somewhere arround 74 or 75. never got hooked on anything. never turned down a free turn on either. long as it was free.

moody blues (the first 7 alblums with the london phillharmonic) and tangarene dream, still my all time favorite music.

incense and beanbag chairs. even incense WITHOUT burning rope. actualy my dad started burning incense when we had the old wood stove in the cabin in colfax. back in the early 60s. when i was still in high school. and hadn't never gotten laid.

70s was college and my working carrer, most of it, on and off. it was livin by myself as i saw fit. it was buyin a boat and living on it for a couple of years.

late 70s was bed springs acres in southern oregon, paia modules and a vox jaguar keyboard to play through them.

early 70s was long year drilling and the system shovel department, harrah's reno in the coin room after you bet silica, third, fourth, second and first jobs after getting out of the air force in 71

My wife and I grew up in the '70s, and one night we started making a list of the "fads" and things we most remembered. Our complete list is at

http://www.digirealms.net/~sunlion/seventies.html

It suffers its own bias, of course, but it's how WE remember it.

How could we ever forget 'Punk Rock'!!!.
Nonetheless....as you may recall Paul;....Disco Music....came along at exactly the same time as Punk & these two totally opposite music cults/fads - shared the pop charts as strange bedfellows.

There were two supreme divas: Donna Summer....& this lady:

-Andrea True Connection.

I thought one song stood out supreme in the 1970s: 'Dreamer' by Supertramp:

in 1968 i joined the air force to get out of otherwise being drafted into the army. yes i was over 18 (having been born in 48, i was almost 20). two years two months and one day of stateside ojt later is was offered an honerable discharge. there ain't no way in hell i was about to turn it down. so in 71 i was free, broke and happy.

in 77 i was living at bed spring acres and spent the next decade in oregon, during which i turned 30. 77 was also the first year you could buy a personal computer, such as they were then, 8bits and all, in a retail store.

how i survived childhood and highschool without them was by going for long walks by myself in the woods.

now that they exist i wouldn't want to deny them to anyone. but if media takes over the internet it will become just as useless as television.

untill someone makes available a totaly noncomercial not for profit alternative one.

good thing computers don't absolutely have to have a connection to the outside world to be useful all by themselves. having one is a very good thing though, at least as long is it can be cept everyones and not that of vested corporate interests alone. the way soverign national politics has become.

Below is a link to a photo I took from behind the stage area at a concert featuring Eddie Money, The Steve Miller Band, and The Eagles. The show was in August of 1978 at Riverfront Stadium (no longer in existence) on the riverfront area, downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

It was a great show, too. They were pretty much "top of the name" at that moment in history, and they opened the show at sunset with the song Hotel California.

http://www.digirealms.net/~sunlion/images/EaglesConcertCinciAug1978-2.jpg

It was the last "stadium concert" in Cincinnati for more than a decade. It was in this stadium that the "Big Red Machine" Cincinnati Reds baseball team, the greatest baseball team ever assembled, had their glory days.
