View Full Version : The Moon Thread
basically, what i know about moon phases is this
waxing moon is when you do things that you want to grow or make bigger (starting a business, or a bank account), it's a time to start new things, and it's when above ground crops are supposed to be planted
waning moon is the opposite, it's the time to quit bad habits, or work on making things smaller (losing weight :p ). also the time to plant below ground crops.

no they're not about a day out, but lucky for you guys i have the witches calendar which is American!
if you want to work with the full moon or any moon phase you can go for the actual day, or day before or day after, it doesn't have to be exact, of course if you can manage it i'd always go for spot on

this is the growing moon from new to full
the first quarter of growth (0 to 49%) is the waxing crescent and the second quarter of growth (51-99%) is called the waxing gibbous
Spells that are worked to increase or expand something -- love spells (http://www.luckymojo.com/lovespells.html) to draw someone to you, money spells (http://www.luckymojo.com/moneyspells.html) to attract wealth, Crown of Success spells (http://www.luckymojo.com/crownofsuccesss.html) to advance a career and bring you the most recognition on the job or in school, spells to increase business or draw customers to your shop, and honey jar spells (http://www.luckymojo.com/honeyjar.html) to sweeten someone to you -- are often begun or worked entirely while the moon is waxing or growing bigger in apparent size. Folks who want their hair to grow thick and fast cut their hair when the moon is waxing. People plant crops grown for leaves, flowers, or seeds during the waxing moonhttp://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/moon/sphases2.gif
i'm looking around for something that talks about the tides and the moon and the way that the pull of the moon afffects us, our moods, our energy and stuff like that.
Any problem can be addressed from either side of the moon phases. Let's look at a couple of common problems for examples. Many of us are overweight and would like to get into better shape. On the waxing side, we could affirm that we are gaining in strength, doing more physical exercise, becoming more active by walking, dancing or taking up some other activity, and eating healthier foods. On the waning cycle, we can affirm that we are letting go of excess weight, decreasing our portions of food, and reducing the number of hours that we simply sit and read or watch TV. Notice how these are just two sides of the same coin. So, in other words, if we were to consciously approach the changes we would like to make, we would be mindful of them at all times, until we see the changes happening. Once we see the changes happening, we celebrate. Waxing Moon
The Waxing Moon, time of enchantment, occurs 2-3 days after the New Moon. This is when the left-facing waxing crescent shows her face in the west. For a two-week cycle of time her light increases (she grows fatter) and energy rises. Everything is active, vital, outgoing and expressive, bringing to fruition the seeds planted at New Moon: a gathering of earth's bounty for health and healing. Each day she rises an hour earlier and sets an hour late. Halfway through this phase of the cycle the sun and moon are square each other (making a 90 degree angle), bringing challenge and growth through struggle. This moon is visible from noon to midnight. Waxing moon corresponds to Artemis, Goddess of enchantment.
i'll edit more in later.
ps, did someone want to look at full moon, new moon and the quarter moons specifically?

Many cultures around the world associate a Goddess with the Moon and Her cycles. The dependable comings and goings of the Moon's cycle very quickly were associated with the cycles of a woman's life - both her progress from birth and Youth to Mother to Crone and death and a woman's menstrual flows. And with this Moon association also comes a close association with the Night and with Water.
And so all things associated with these things - night, Moon, tides, water, menses - became associated with the Goddess. The tides are associated with the Goddess, as are the dreams and the quiet, unknown wildness that come with the night.
***
The mysteries of the Great Moon Goddess manifests her eternal nature as the ebb and flow of birth, life and death as she rules over the unknown reaches of the vast endless nighttime sky. Watching her silent journey in the dark midnight sky we experience over and over again the dawning of the new crescent life growing into the full circle of brightness, and her inevitable slow demise and then the total darkness until she mysteriously reappears once again. To our ancient ancestors these cycles mimicked the three stages of a woman’s life. The Feminine Moon became the Triple Goddess, whose threefold phase of Maiden/Virgin, Mother/Fullness and the Crone/Aging are also represented as the Receiver, the Creator and the Destroyer of Life. The Moon Goddess is also symbolic of the three fates: the first spins the thread of life, the second or middle weaves the cloth and the third and final measures and cuts it.
Once each month we expectantly welcome the Virgin/Maiden aspect of the Waxing New Moon peeking through the darkness. She is carefree, youthful and brimming with new life and the beckoning promise of new beginnings. Money-drawing spells are very potent at this time, as well as making wishes to bring good luck, love, or to get a new job. Trim your hair and nails during the New Moon to promote thickness, strength and healthy re-growth. The New Moon Maiden rules over the hopefulness of the springtime months in all their budding beauty. She is a fearless yet innocent Virgin Goddess who comes to us as the Goddesses Artemis, Diana, and Pallas Athena.
The ripe Full Moon Goddess symbolizes fertility, a growing mother’s knowledge, nurturing, and love. Her full-bodied roundness glows brightly in the night sky. Her image represents the summertime months in all their rich abundance, and the Autumn’s bountiful harvest. Her Great Mother Goddess aspects come to us as Kwan Yin, Demeter, Isis, Tara, Aphrodite, Venus, Ishtar, and the Earth Mother Gaia. During these Esbat rituals an experienced High Priestess can draw down the Moon into herself and partake of the awesome Goddess energy that is ripe within the Full Moon.
The circle repeats itself endlessly throughout time as we come to the third and final phase, and to me the most potent, the Waning Moon. Here we have the powerful Crone who embodies the last fading crescent of moonlight, and who as Goddess is filled with inner strength rising from a lifetime of experiences. This powerful representation of the Dark Goddess represents our fears of the unknown, of death and of change. The Crone’s dominion is the darkness as she becomes the destroyer and taker of life.
Her nature rules over Magick, mystery, sexual power, and all worldly accomplishments. She is simultaneously the misunderstood and feared Crone, Wise One, Grandmother, Queen of the Shadows and the Underworld, Mistress of Initiation and the Gatekeeper of the Realms of the Dead. Her thin crescent light fades into the dark eternal night sky, as does the final cycle of our lives. Imagine her presiding over the Cauldron of Life, conjuring images of death and rebirth, for the end must come in order to begin again. Accepting her powerful image can provide wisdom, comfort and understanding to us as we approach the final years of our lives. She is the barren Winter underworld with hopes of rebirth.
The Waning Moon is a time to banish from your life anything you wish to be rid of, such as anger, jealousy or laziness. It is a time of cleansing in preparation for the pre-destined new moon’s return.
As we fear yet embrace the Dark Goddess, she comes to us is many ancient guises; the Witch Queen Hecate as protectress of midwives and the guardian of the crossroads (ask her favor by leaving her offerings of bread and honey at a crossroad); the birth-and-death Mother Kali, the devourer of her children who in turn is also the giver of life; and Peresphone as Queen of the Underworld who descends into the depths of the earth each Winter to return for her annual rebirth into Spring; the sweet luring songs of the Siren/Mermaids, who cast spells of ship-wreck and finality upon those who listen; Cerridwen stirring her Magick Cauldron, the source of death and life; and Adam’s first wife, Lilith, condemned and viewed by the fearful patriarchal Christians to fly through the night sky giving birth to demon children, she is the first and most famous Night-Hag.
Ancient society categorized the village wise-woman as the characteristic Crone (Witch). She was the midwife, healer, medicine woman and elder of the community. She grew herbs, mixed her potions, tended the dead, healed the sick, and birthed the children. Symbolic of the fading crescent moon, she became the Crone who was at the end of her years but held vast knowledge and offered patience and guidance for those who would listen. As the learned midwife her position in the community was as revered as it was feared because she helped bring the awesome mystery of life into the world. As healer she held the power of life or death with her medicinal remedies and nurturing wisdom. To our horror many midwives and healers lost their lives during the burning times as the patriarchal religions and organized medical profession jealousy swept through the land.
Once revered long ago, the misunderstood symbol of the Dark Crone Goddess has been unfavorably depicted since Christian times in stories, mythologies, songs and tales. She was and continues to be represented as the Old Hag, the evil Mother-in-Law, the wicked Witch or Queen, the ugly old bitch and in our current age the “Bag Lady”, to name but a few. The symbol of her ancient wisdom dismissed under a persona of ridicule and ugliness.
I myself cannot look upon a woman who has reached this pinnacle without feeling sincere reverence for her many years. I see her as the Waning Crescent Moon; having been both the Maiden and Mother, she now completes the cycle. I view her as beauty and joy itself, with her every wrinkle and white hair a splendid tribute to her age. The fruits of her life lay before her. For those of us who are willing to accept her wisdom she has many tales to tell and much guidance to share.
Let us embrace all that the Dark Crone Goddess represents. She is the wise-woman in each of us who is satisfied with her accomplishments and is willing to pass her unique knowledge on to future generations.
Embodying the third and final cycle of the Moon’s eternal dance, she will inevitably reincarnate as the New Moon Virgin Goddess.
All that dies shall be re-born.

A Little Moon God history...
The Inuit tribe called their moon god Anningan. They believed that Anningan constantly chased his sister, Malina, who was the Sun goddess. As he chased her, he forget to eat which made him get much thinner. This, the Inuits believed, is why the moon got thinner every night. Then, when Anningan got hungry enough, he disappeared for three days each month to eat and returned when he was full. This was how they explained the new moon and the full moon. And because Malina wanted to stay away from her brother who chased her, she stayed on the other side of the Earth. This is why the sun and moon rise and set at different times.
In the Hindu culture, Soma is their moon god. The Hindus believed that Soma rode through the sky in a chariot drawn by white horses. Soma also represented a drink that only the gods could consume to make them live forever. Because the moon was thought to hold this drink, the Hindus believed that when the moon got smaller it was because the gods were drinking.
In the oldest Japanese religion called Shinto, the moon god was named Tsuki-Yomi. The story of this moon god is that he was born from the right eye of a larger being, and his sister, Amaterasu was born from the left eye. Tsuki-Yomi lived in the Heavens with his sister, but one day he went to the goddess of food to ask for food. This goddess of food offered him a meal that she created from her mouth and nose. Tsuki-Yomi thought that was disgusting and he hurt the goddess of food. When his sister found out about his nasty behavior, she decided she never wanted to see him again. Since then, they have lived apart and that is why the night always follows the day.

The Waning Moon
WANNING MOON The moon is now diminishing in strength and the moons knows all and is fulfilled. A good time for candle magic to get rid of anything you may want to get rid of, eg old/ bad habits, or old ways that no longer serve you anymore. Also a great time for healing people and for cleansing anything or removing negativity.
DARKMOON The moon is now restive and waiting to be reborn and is out of sight. This phase can also be known as the NEWMOON. It?s a great time for new beginnings, starting a new project or beginning a new way of life. A good time to think about achieving goals, to rest and recuperate and focus on bringing about peace, enhance your physic ability, to practice meditation and to search for your souls desire. A good time to neutralise anything and a time to stop someone causing you trouble.
Waxing or Waning Moon?
by T. Laskowski
If you want to determine if the moon is Waxing (getting bigger) or Waning (getting smaller) all you have to do is look when you can see it. If it is visible in the evening sky the Moon is Waxing (getting bigger). If the moon is visible at dawn or in the early morning, it is Waning. Here is a rhyme to help you remember it.
If you see the Moon at the end of the day
A bright Full Moon is on its way
If you see the Moon in the early dawn
Look real quick, it will soon be gone.
Another way to identify a Waxing or Waning Moon is to look at which side is "incomplete". When the Moon is illuminated in such a way that the side facing West is "incomplete" the Moon is Waning (getting smaller). It the side to the East is "incomplete" the Moon is Waxing (getting bigger)
Incomplete to the West
The Moon will disappear and hide in its nest
Incomplete to the East
Soon its as big as a Christmas feast.

information about waning moon spells
The Waning Moon - spells that decrease, banishes or brings things to an end. perform banishings, bindings and eliminating things (ie. negativity, disease, bad habits, obstacles, etc.) Rituals involving release, reversal, death and resurrection, healing, wisdom, maturity, counter-magick, liberation, overcoming, weather-working (to quell), weight loss, real estate (to sell), breaking addictions and streaks of bad luck. Exorcisms and the casting and breaking of curses is performed at this time. The colors are black and grey. The Goddess in Crone aspect (post-menapausal). The spiritual, the underworld, death, transformation.
And this i didn't know.....
The Dark Moon - is a 3 1/2 day period just before the new moon. The moon is not visible in the sky and those who practice spellcrafting in accordance with the energies of the lunar phases refrain from all magickal activity until the dark moon passes. According to ancient moon lore, any spells cast during the dark moon are unlikely to bring forth the results one desires. This is an ideal time, however, for rest and recuperation, meditation, vision questing and planning of future spellwork and rituals.

And some waning moon spells
Take a ritual bath. Here is one of my favorites:
Run the water and add sea salt (Epsom Salt will do). Place some lavender and rosemary in the water (either herbs or essential oil). With your left hand, swirl the water around the tub. Get in and relax. Release the water and visualize that which you want to release flowing down the drain. When ready, pat yourself dry and put on some comfortable clothing, unless of course, you prefer to work skyclad.
Next, light a white candle symbolizing truth and protection. Sit with this candle, and on a piece of paper, write down that which you wish to let go of. Put a lot of intention and emotion into what you are writing (and always be careful what you wish for).
Anyone want to loose weight? remember spells only work if you back them up with the intention of succeeding in your everyday life, basically it won't work if you don't follow this up with a healthy diet and exercise- sorry folks
athame is a ritual knife (usually with a black handle) that should only be used in ritual and spell casting
And some waning moon spells
Timimg: Waning Moon (start just after Full Moon)
Preparation: Using an athame (or another sharp item that you have ritually blessed) mark a black candle into 14 equal parts (13 rings). Mark each section with number fives (5).
On the night after the Full Moon, burn the candle down to the first mark while meditating, and chanting the following:
"As this candle burns, so my fat burns.
As this candle decreases, so my weight decreases.
I have complete control over my weight.
My body is truly perfect in every way.
I now weigh a perfect __(insert desired goal)___ pounds.
Every day I am slimmer and healthier.
I am as perfect as the Goddess within me.
Thank you, Goddess, for your help.
This is my will, so mote it be."
Do this nightly, burning the candle down to the next mark, until the night of the New Moon, when the candle should be allowed to burn out. It is also helpful to picture your body's fat cells burning off and to feel your increased metabolism and energy. Your body may feel warm and tingly. As the candle goes down, so your weight goes down. You will lose 5-10 pounds over the two weeks. This spell can be done every month, or as needed.
