To be a hippie, you MUST look like me! You know, all sexy.
Sweetheart, to be a 'hippie' first, you have to buy into labels.
I don't like labels at all, but I LOVE being called a hippie.

Trying to remain peaceful against all odds?

Retaining an open mind also.

Actually wouldn't it be in how you dress? I mean I wear tye-dye like almost all the time and people would come up and ask me if I were a hippie. I think it's all in the clothes you wear. B/c no matter what I'm sure it's hippie-style-liked! I'm so layed back!

they should be seeking love. they shouldn't be trying to be anything (including a non-comformist), except themselves. they should try to find peace in everything and share whats in their hearts with the world, in order to make it a better place.

I don't believe in being a hippie in this day and age. I only believe in being yourself and doing what you want and being a free spirit. Putting labels on people makes it SO EASY for them to fake who they are. I know a number of people who thought being a hippie or punker or whatever looked cool, so they got "the clothes" and "the books" and the lingo down and all of a sudden, that's who they are. Well, that doesn't go over so well with me, so I just say BE WHO YOU ARE and don't concern yourself with any label.

Like everyone else said, there shouldn't really be a certain look, although there was obviously one in the 60's/70's. But I guess they just shouldn't look like the crowd or the general public if you really want to stamp them.

To me this is a hard question because, yes i think we'd all like to think that we are individuals and we don't need labels and that we don't necissarily belong to any1 group.

Through many dicussions on this very topic, I have come to terms that as much as some of us cringe when we hear labeling...labeling is juz a way to classify a belief system (more of an optimistic pt. of view, but whatever). It is commonly known that ALOT of HIPPIES believe in "peace, wear tye-dyes, protest and maybe smoke pot"

The pt. that i'm trying to get to here is that, yes you maybe labeled something like A HIPPIE based on those patchwork clothes you wear and ur participation in the protest against the war downtown, but that doesn't mean that u've adopted every aspects of the so called sterotypical hippies lifestyle. Everyone puts their own spin on their so called label and thats what important! Its important that with in your certain label you create your individuality! Because in the end whether u like it or not people are going to put you in a catagory or place a label upon you, so you might as well make it a good one!

:) Being called a hippie is a complimet in my eyes, but thats only one opinion.

CONCLUSION
A hippy really isn't suppose to look like anything...you decide what clothes, hairstyles, and jewlery you feel most confident in and go for it! And if you happen to be called a hippy then I guess thats the label you comfortably fell into. Same goes for your beliefs. Don't try to fit into a label.... Find what you like 1st then let the label fall upon you.

i think that Nathan is so extremly funny:) i also try to avoid labels, but i do also love being called a hippy, under circumstances, some people tease me for it, but some people say "wow, your like a hippy" i mostly find it funny how they label....im in sewing class, and i was sewing a peace sign, i was wearin a really groovy skirt that day....so anyway so this girl asks "are you a vegetarian?" i say yes, she says "wow your like totally hippy like" HAHAHAHAHA yeah labels, labels, labels are extremly funny!! hahaha like yesterday i saw an israeli movie called, the end of the world left (in 1968 israel was considerd nowhere) and so one girl is wearin a peace sign, the other girl gos "whats that mnecklace, she says "itss like the hippys, you know they beleive in free love" hahahaha it was the PEACE SIGN okay yeah i agree with you... about how labels are funny and stuff. i dont buy into them but i like calling myslef a hippy and i like it if others think that too... even if they dont tihkn so though i feel like one inside. um.. wow compared to all the other points this is pretty usuless lol but anyways

JohnnyX

To understand what a "hippie" looks like you must first understand where the "hippie" comes from. "Hip" was a word used by the Beat Generation used to describe something or someone they liked. They wanted to seperate themselves from the establishment so they would use different words for different meanings. Whether the Beat word "hip" and the part of the body are related, I don't know. Regardless...when Beats would describe a guy or girl they liked they might very well have said "he/she's a hippie". But it didn't come into the light of the outside world until one of the Beat's all-time favorites Neal Cassidy (http://www.umsl.edu/~skthoma/nother.htm) came on the scene and even blew the Beats' minds........he very may have been the first true "HIPPIE". Now, in the 21st century, anyone who is far-left, anti-establishment and environmentally conscious get labeled a "hippie". What they look like makes no difference. I have short hair and when people get to know me they understand how I feel about things...it is then I get labeled a "hippie" and that is FINE BY ME!

I'm a born & raised Catholic, but don't want to accept it anymore because of my self-discovery of the blatant hypocricies that Catholicism is found on.

I'm not saying that all religion is bad, but Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, and any other religion having to do with sacrificing to one something that may not even exist is just stupid in of itself. And especially Catholicism, because of the hypocricy that is their stance on issues like abortion, gay marriage, drugs, and acceptance. They preach about 'loving your brothers & sisters', but they say that you can't love somebody if they are the same gender as you. There's a contradictory hypocricy.

The bible itself is corrupt in the fact that it blames women for everything that went wrong with the world, and the fact that maybe just maybe, all the so called prophets could have been indulging a few 'substances' back in the day. Opium and Hashish did exist in that day & age, so maybe the prophets thought that they heard 'God' and wrote what they think he said down on paper.

I'm just rambling, but if anybody agrees with me on this, please add your own thoughts.

to be a hippie you must not worry about what you look like just what you are doing in the world.

Veritas
03-19-2005, 04:13 AM
You guys are missing the point. George Harrison once said,"hippies are just posers and fakes." hippies are not supposed to conform, hippies don't exist.

MichaelByrd1967
03-19-2005, 07:04 AM
Maybe, George is right. But I think when I grew my hair, I felt like an individual, because the environment I was in doesn't condone long hair so much, that I knew I had to make a statement.

Which is another hypocricy about Catholicism. Their schools put strict fascistic rules on apperance, behavior, & so forth, yet they preach about being individuals, when they make us wear the same thing everyday, just like everybody else. And what's worse is that some kids I know in my school agree with that.

ˇFUCKING ROBOTS!

peace kid
03-19-2005, 09:34 PM
Being A Hippie Isnt About How You Dress Or What Music You Like OR HOW LONG YOUR HAIR IS. Anyone Can Be A Hippie. IT ISNT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, ITS MORE ABOUT HOW YOU THINK. YOU CAN STILL BE A HIPPIE IF YOU HAVE SHORT HAIR AND WEAR EXPENSIVE CLOTHES. AS LONG AS YOU BELIEVE IN PEACE AND LOVE, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A HIPPIE.

Veritas
03-20-2005, 06:53 AM
Its just a state of mind. If you think your a hippie you don't need to dress like one and grow your hair long, that would be conforming.

MichaelByrd1967
03-23-2005, 04:51 AM
I think a true hippies is someone who considers themselves, their families, their friends, their world, their talents, and all of the bullshit that doesn't even matter. If you have a desk job, and all you do is tabulate numbers to settle accounts payable/receivable, your life must be kinda boring. I mean a real hippie would just do the things that they wanna do and not what their parents, their government, or their schools want them to do.

Consider the problems with the world. In Africa, The Middle East, and Asia people are starving and suffering from diseases, because of their money-minded greedy, oppressive, governments. Especially with the war in Iraq, the still-unsettled state of Israel and Palestine, the AIDS pandemic in Africa, terrorism, nuclear weapons, and Conservatives. The problems with the world today, could be fixed only if people could look inside of themselves to see what they really want, and look out at others to think about they need.

JohnnyX

Well, I think what you are asking has more to do with appearance than anything else. The hip look, for me, is to separate me from others. I don't like labels either, but unfortunantly, they exist, and we must work with or around them. There are stereotypes about what hip folk should be. It's not about what you look like, it's about what you stand for. It's a lifestyle. Personally though, I think that it's hard to strut around advertising for some huge corporation. If you know what they stand for, most likely, you're compromising your beliefs. At least, that's my view.
