haha nice one, I think they're making up for the fact that when i was a kid they didn't understand me at all, I think they are actually straight laced but feel that they do not want to alienate themselves from me

I've been looking for a fresh fox roadkill. Tan the hide and let the maggots clean the skull for me. I couldn't ever kill anything. But I want a fox skull for the ceremonial staff I made during Pennsic last.

..and you know what they say...two heads are better than one

I've got a sheep's skull but the fields are littered with those things - they are good to practise drawing. Those witchcraft rituals.. Are they for the good or the dark lord?

Well, not really. My ma has a skull of some animal. (It may be shrunken.) She had a snake head wearing a cowboy hat and a turtle shell rattle lol.(Can’t spell the animal that looks like a turtle lol)

please don't get me preaching, witches tend to have a goddess and a lord, none of them (the gods and lords) are wholey good or bad and dark is a form of energy, which is very powerful and very far from being bad

my mum bleached the lamb skull before I got it which I don't partculary like, but i'm not going to argue about smething that I didn't even own at that time, how long do you think maggots would take, and where would you put it in the meantime?

I think I agree although I've always loved skulls so when my parents gave me my fist ever skull, that was bird, i was over the moon

Maggots take about two weeks to completely strip an exposed skull in temperate weather. I would use a milk crate, to keep stray dogs and opossums and the like from dragging the skull away.

Looking for the pic of the staff. Yes, I just tuck it behind the shed. Tan the hide with salts and the natural tannic acid from cedar chips. And I would enjoy a tea with you.

very cool... although I've never known any ritual work that involved using bones of any kind, although that's just me. I wouldn't know what to do with skulls if I had them... other than decorate my altar for the Day of the Dead or Samhain or something.

skuls are supposed to help be able to draw the shape of the head they were once inside of. sometimes i think people are too casual about them and sometimes too out of context otherwise.

and i realy, i'm not sure i can or should judge that either.

you know, life death, both part of being in the same universe as all the diversity of everything else too.

I think I'm up to thirteen skulls at this point. None of mine are real, though...I've only found one website where I could legally purchase a real one...I didn't like the three there.
I'm into human, though, I doubt I'd turn down an animal one...Should one present itself to me.
I've found sites where you can get a mix of cold cast resin, & bone supposedly.

Two of my skulls are plastic life sized ones...One shoots fake flames out of it's head...I painted it, & made him freakier/spookier looking...
The other plastic one I named Bertha, because she has black roses sticking out of the top of her skull, & leaves, & moss on her face...If you put batteries in her she plays the death march funk, & the roses dance! Hahaha!
I have one ceramic one, (out of a few ceramic ones) signed by Tom Savini...I keep thinking about giving him away, because he has bad memories of my ex associated to him.

Those skulls remind me of Judas in The Passion of the Christ. As he sits by a fire, two children approach him and ask him what's wrong. When Judas curses them, they turn into demons. They chase Judas, tormenting him as he flees outside the city walls. The next morning, Judas finds the donkey from Palm Sunday lying dead and being devoured by maggots. Wow, that scene... so significant.

my husband has all kinds of skulls: longhorn, elk, deer, ram, coyote. they call to him. he found one down an old farm well in red mesa. he has a eerie way with birds, too. wild birds come to him all the time. wild animals behave very strangely around dave. he's had more run-ins with wilkd animals coming in to him that anyone i've ever seen. anyway, every time he's out walking about, he'll stumble across skulls. animals come to him when they're dying, too. just like they did to me. all the neighborhood pets would come to my window to die, it was kinda neat, in a bizarre, spooky way.

okay. he'd be thrilled to share. he gives some away to family and stuff. they're very popular. he adores their beauty. he has these great pictures of this owl that came to him when it was dying. and he's got some wonderful film of him walking up to a grazing cow elk in the wild. there's anothing picture he has of this wild bird up in the mountains sitting in his hand and eating. once while we were out in the boonies, a coyote cub walked right up to him. i watched the whole thing. my daughter is the same way with cats. if there's a cat within a two mile radius, it will find her and befriend her. i have these great pictures of kai holding some strange cat no one has ever seen while she's going down a slide. but anyway, this is about the skulls. i'll ask him to take pictures of them.

Wow! Very cool. I've never seen skulls in my life besides in museums and on tv. It surprises me that so many of you have so much experience with them. I think it's awesome... great collection Samhain, and I really liked hearing about your husbands experience with wild animals and yours with dying pets, KC. I am definately feeling in the spirit! I want a skull collection now.

I used to sketch out masks with skull faces/attributes that I wanted to make, but I never got around to it.

well death is a very important aspect in nearly all branches of paganism, I feel skulls link me to the energy of death an important reminder that all things die and without this there can be no new life, truely the sacred spiral!

also Samhain is all about death so it is also a representation of my favourite festival
