I remember looking forward to getting up early every saturday morning to watch hours of cartoons.....I mean the old classics ....not that crap my kids had to watch as kids.

Aside from the given...the Looney Tunes Classics....which thanx to the cartoon network are still around.

The Beanie and Cecil Hour....who remembers this one ?

The Tennessee Tuxedo Show (Don Adams was the voice of Tennessee)

Tudor the Turtle and Mr. Wizard

Underdog (Wally Cox was the voice of Underdog)..and his "Lois Lane" equivient..Pure Polly Purebred.......there was also a sub series with Underdog called.....Go-Go Gorphers...

The Rocky and Bullwinkle show.....which had a list of extras..like Grimm's Fractured Fairy Tales.......Sherman and Peabody

There are so many that I vaguely remember but can't remmber which shows they were a part of...like Snaggle Puss...which I think wa part of the Pink Panther Show

and of course can't forget about ...Jonny Quest

Beanie and Cecil....were drawn puppets...Cecil was a sea-monster type dinosaur(friendly):) and Beanie was a little boy with a prop on top of his beanie cap

Damn I forgot one of my favorites....Quick Draw McDraw and his side kick Boba-louie

Casper, the friendly ghost! See, ghosts don't need to be scary and it's ok to believe in things that most people can't see and science can't prove. Good anti-brainwashing!

Rocky & his Fiends, I mean Friends! I liked Boris & Natasha. They were cool European Goth! LOL!

How about Yogi Bear? He claimed to be "smarter than the average bear". Yeah right! ;)

Here's a good one: Diver Dan! What was his friends name? Finver? And what was the Barracuda's name? Sorta like Finding Nemo, but very retro! Oh it wasn't a cartoon though, more like string puppets.

Shari Lewis & Lamb Chops, also not cartoons, but definately good fare. :)

how far back ya want me to go? i'm not sure if saturday morning enshrinement of animation itself goes back as far as i do. but i remember captain sacto having rocky and bullwinkle and also something i've never seen or heard of anywhere else since, which considering how i felt about it is probably just as well, called crusader rabbit.

at any rate i do remember yogi and bobo being new. i actualy remember hanna-barbara being a major upgrade over loony toons and disney, which i seem to recall was just about all there was before hanna-barbara came along. then i remember the era when they were first being surpassed and starting to fall by the wayside.

when japan and canada picked up the gauntlet and started giving us the even better, or mostly so. we still never get the best of the best from either here in the u.s. cause of certain cultural hangups the u.s. has

there was some kind of super dog or wonder dog or something like that. along with augi-doggi and doggi daddy. this was before the super dog with the shoe, that was kind of both his security blanket and the 'secret of his super powers'.

top cat was one of my favorite of the late hanna-barbara/early nelvana transition era.

well into the dic/nelvana era there was dynosaucers.

there was something sheman and the masters of the universe replaced that was way better of them. it may have been called dark star. but there's a campy live action skiffy short by that name too so that might not have been it.

come to think of it, when i was little saturday morning i tended to sleep in so that may be why i don't remember much about the ones in the 50s except that one on captain sacto that i kind of hated.

oh good lord, gumby, i'd forgotten that till i saw it mentioned here. pioneering claymation by understatement of noncomplexity. i actualy liked that one a lot.

I remember Crusader Rabbit, he sucked.

Hanna Barbera actually made some superior cartoons when they worked for MGM, then they cheapened out with Tom Cat, Ruff n Ready, et al. The animation was really 2nd rate in those shows.

I think Rocky and Bullwinkle used to get into trouble for being too political. The movie released awhile ago was really good, I thought. (Watch me pull a rabbit outa my hat.)

Beanie and Cecil was a Bob Clamp..ette Cartoooonnnn! He did some B. Bunny cartoons for Warner Bros. originally. Apparently B&S was started by him as a local puppet show.

Let's go into the old WayBack Machine as ah....Mr. Peabody the dog would do with what's his face the kid.

eee gads, someone else who actualy remembers crusader rabbit and how badly it sucked!!!

captain sacto ...

that was mid 50s! we were living in sacramento and had this sears silvertone black and white all metal that lasted forever untill we wore all the metal off the contacts on the tuner!

i didn't much care for rockey and bulwinkle either with all their streotypical crap. even if they did titter on the verge of satyrizing themselves with it.

i actualy liked top cat. and the idea of the jetsons though i was waaay dissappointed they didn't so much more with it's creative potential.

yogi and flintstones of course have since became cult classics. but augie doggie and some of the other's like that were really pioneering work for their time.

most of those really old ones i don't care for because of their attitudes, typical of the 50s, that i didn't think much of either, like early looney toons.

i DO remember the origeonal popeye.

some of those you mentioned were cross overs from the sunday funnies in the newspaper. and i remember seeing them there.

i didn't much love captain kangaroo either, though i certainly remembet felix the cat.

the name ruff and ready doesn't ring any bells, but might if you refreshed my memory.

but i remember cucla, fran and ollie. not a cartoon but cucla and ollie being like an american punch and judy only cucla i think it was was a dragon, and fran was their human m.c. sort of.

i even remember somehow seeing one eppisode of bill sear's in the park. also paw pets. i don't know how that's possible. i'm guessing that one episode had been taped and it was replayed on something else. but i was too young at the time to understand the details of anything like that.

to be perfectly honest, before hanna barbara i didn't really like what cartoons there were all that much.

they were all kissing the ass of the politics of the mccarthy era, mostly because they really didn't have any other choice if they wanted to be on,
and that really sucked more then anything as far as i was concerned and still am.

it was h-b that really started breaking that mold and things started getting better after that even if, as you say, the pioneers themselves didn't really lead for all that long.

there was disney of course, who managed somehow to go through the motions of kissing the maccarthyism ass and yet still get away occasionaly with slipping something else a little more interesting.

i guess because he managed to become such an institution that even the politicians were hesitant to mess with him too much. something like that.

i guess you could say i remember augie doggy & doggy daddy ;)

"no fly swatter can harm him, no fly paper can hold him, no insecticide can stop him". (http://www.toonopedia.com/fearless.htm)

what about "jonny quest (http://www.classicjq.com/)?" anyone mention him?

i didn't see any mention of "clutch cargo" either. remember they were cartoons with real mouths? it was so freaky, but one of my favorites.

"Mr. Gillette's Synchro-Vox system was used in Clutch Cargo to combine live-action human lips with animated drawings." (http://www.toontracker.com/clutchcargo/cargo.htm)

wow, this toontracker (http://www.toontracker.com/links/toonlink.htm) linkpage rocks!

Yogi- scooby- Warner bros (bugs, etc), smurfs, etc.

When cartoons were good, and art was involved.

Im sorry. but frame by frame jcheap, dramatic, violent and sexual japanese animation isnt the type of show id like to expose my hypothetical six year old to.

Even japanese animated cartoons for those 5+ years old contain characters with big bouncing breasts and miniskirts.

Where did talent and class go?

My favorite Saturday morning cartoon was "Mighty Mouse". Mighty Mouse was a little heroic mouse who could fly; he wore a cape, and had a big "M" emblazened on his chest. The deal was, one of his friends would somehow become involved in some dilemma with a "bad guy" that was life-threatening. Across town sat Mighty Mouse, and he would miraculously become aware of the dire straits his friend was in, and he would come to their rescue and save them. Once he realized the mission that lay before him, he'd jump into his windowsill or something of that nature, and wail,
"Here I come to save the daaaay!!"
Then a chorus would sing, "That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!"
Then he'd jump into the air and fly to the location of the one who was in distress - once he took flight, he'd continue singing, "Here I come to save the daaaay!", etc. Then, he'd land; take care of the bad guy lickety-split, and soothe his friend. I used to love that show! Kind of unreal stuff, but it did deliver a moral message in every show nonetheless. And, my friends today tell me that I'll always stand up for the underdog! Mere coincidence?

Good thread; made me nostalgic...oh, to be a child again.....

Sincere Regards, Michaela

The old Tom and Jerry cartoons produced by Fred Quimby were the bomb! I remember getting up early to watch Underdog. Sometimes the Go-Go-Gophers were on Underdog. My wife bought me the DVD set of Underdog for Christmas. LOVE IT! Next, I would like to get The Bullwinkle Show on DVD. So many great secondary cartoons like George of the Jungle, The Way Back Machine with Sherman and Peabody, Aesop's Fables.

Does anyone remember Captain Kangaroo and the Magic Drawing Board? I loved that thing. They also had a great cartoon called Tom Terrific. He had a funnel for a hat and a his side kick was his wonderdog, Manfred.

The Hannah-Barbera characters!!! Quickdraw McGraw and Babalouie, Huckleberry Hound, and my favorite...Snagglepuss..."Exit! Stage right, even!"

How many remember the old Hal Seeger cartoons? Milton the Monster and Fearless Fly?

Can't leave out Woody Woodpecker, Droopy, Barney Bear and Mighty Mouse.

You can find just about every cartoon on www.bcdb.com (http://www.bcdb.com). I hope that's allowed...it is relevant.
