DXM: how does pure powder trip compare to OTC syrups?

i have a feeling that most of the yuckiness of dxm trips comes from all the inactive crap in cough syrups.. is the pure stuff much cleaner and feel better?
do you still feel sick and puke a lot with the pure stuff?
