Yeah, I've got quite a disc collection. About 60-80 "popular" albums, like from the 60's-present, some electronica, and another hundred or so classical, organ, erotic percussion, big band, lounge and space age pop. Yeah, vinyl is the cool.

I still pull mine out every now and again. I have around 5,000+ albums and around the same on 45's ( anybody remember them ). Most of my collection is top 40 from the 50's thru the mid to late 70's.

That's wild man. My mom's friend Pudge has about five or six 10 foot long racks full of records. I don't know how many records that is, but damn, it's alot. He also has a room full of basses, up to the ceiling like. Do you have insurance for all that wax?

I just recently got a record player for my birthday, but I grew up listening to records because my parents have a player and hundreds of records.
I actually just bought a few records: The Delta 72 and The Moody Blues

My dad just recently set up one of his old record players in my room, because he used to DJ for dances, and I took a bunch of his records and listen to them all the time. Somehow, it's a different experience on vinyl.

I still have my turntable from over 20 years ago and don't plan on getting rid of it. My vinyl collection consists of about 3 dozen albums (some bought used) and about ninety 45s-mostly '80s vintage.

I'd like to find a place that has some old blues records for sale...I've checked in many of the record stores in my area to no avail...
Currently I've got about 100 - 150 records 45's and LP's, from the late 50's through the late 90's, ranging from the big band stuff, 60's rock, country and soul, 70's goofy disco (including a Disney Disco record), 80's pop and 90's punk and indie....but I'm a sucker for blues music, and have a decent collection of reissues on CD, but nada on record....any help would be appreciated..

i love vinyl so much.. it's become such an obsession. i cleaned and rearranged all my records today. they were all in piles collecting dust, except for the ones i listen to frequently- crosby stills nash n young, bob dylan, joan baez, the beatles, pink floyd, supertramp, steve miller band (im going mad for them lately, i love this band)... now they're all neatly lined up. and is it just me, or is it impossible to get rid of a record? i've got some crazy random shit, and it actually is just that... shit... but i just can't let go of it. i think it might just be me... im such a packrat. but i can get rid of a crappy cd, no sweat... odd :confused:

Vinyl is quite interesting. Every time I get an old record, I always have to wonder who had it before I got it and what he/she thought of it and how often he/she listened to it and whatnot. It's like there's this unknown bond between someone who had and loved an LP and the person who now has and loves that LP.
I was listening to my original pressing of Moby Grape's debut album today and I was thinking about that...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! I love the stories of previous owners of music, you're connected to them and they don't even know it. I found a copy of a Lionel Richie album, with lovenotes from a man to a woman, saying the words on the album was how he felt. It talked about how much he loved her and had this old clipping inside. I bought it at Value Village for a buck fifty. :s
As for vinyl, I love it. I talk about this a lot on this forum, but I love it. My collection is all mine, unfortunately, my mum threw out player and records a few years back so I started from scratch. Since March I have gained an impressive collection ;) It's so much cheaper! I bought the White Album on CD for around 30 bucks, got it on vinyl for 12. (Well, it's cheaper if you don't buy friggin first run owned by the queen, James Dean, fifteen popes, with spots of the blood of Jesus on it, I'm not a collector in the sense of looking for perfection in the record itself, but in the music.
Hey, J Eastman, which artists are you looking for? It may help, I could dig something up for you across my travels if I see anything, I can check my "places" haha
Experience Haze, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a lot of beatles records, 45s and 33 1/3s, aren't worth very much, you can buy a lot of em for under ten bucks. Unless it's first run, or something extraordinary like that. I say just keep it, wait til you get a player, and dig the music. Of course, you may want to find out the value before you dig it too much ;)

skele, do you have a stereo? Check for rca imputs. You should really go buy a new one. Most of these "dj" tables are shit for spinning wax, but work fine for just listening, you might want to consider buying one. idk about the belt, btw, I only buy direct drive.

I LOVE vinyl too. heaps of ppl today think, like the idiot above 'gimme crystal clear digital anyday or wahtever. the thing about vinyl is that, music is a physical thing. its a natural thing. you can feel music. digitising gives you it all clear yer, but for the music that we listne to on vinyl, clarity is not the msot important thing. vinyl gives music more tone, depth, and colour. I dont care that there are little specly sounds on the old records, or that it skips every now and then, the sound is jsut so much better.
I only listen to the beatles and david bowie myself, simply caus thats all weve got, but i want to buy more stuff. Contrary to waht ppl have said in previous opostes, i cant find cheap records anywhere, theyre allllways more expensive than cd's. at least the good ones that is. im not a fan of small groups and underground music.
so yeh i think i can sum it up like this:
Vinyl = Music
Digital = Sound waves

I go to thrift stores and pick up vinyl cheap. There's stuff on vinyl you can never find on CD. Also, I find that some albums sound better than the CD version. Some studios are just incompetent at remastering vinyl to CD.

Music on vinyl is still some of the best stuff ever produced. I have quite a collection of vinyl, and thank God that my turntable still spins them without difficulty. I constantly go back and listen to Humble Pie Rockin the Fillmore, or Deep Purple live in Japan, or Jimi's Band of Gypies, or something really special like the James Gang "Live at Carnegie Hall".

About 10 years ago, I lost over 1000 records in a fire. Needless to say, I was heart broken. I'm slowly puttting that collection back together. I'ts a lot of fun finding the stuff. The only bitch is, some of the records (Hendrix and Zappa for example) are way more expensive now. When I was a kid, I'd order imports out of magazines, for like $5-$10. Man, if you can find those pieces they are 10 times that. Anyway, in my mind, vinyl is the shit. I always loved rolling joints on the cover of the album I was listening to.

when/if i ever get signed and get to record my music, i definetly want to release my albums on to vinyls...
CDs and tapes too, of course, to make them more excessible to people. but, still. i want to be able to have vinyl copies of my music. i love the way vinyl sounds! much warmer sounding than clean cut, professional CD sounds.

I got a record player and was listening to it all the time but for some reason it just stopped playing. I'll turn it on and it'll go over and touch the record but then instead of staying on and playing, it plays for a second then goes back to the little needle stand thing. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm no expert on the mechanics of turn tables, it may be something else, but that worked on mine. I hope it helps.

There is a friction type mechanism in some old turntables that doesn't activate when the needle is moving slowly across the record but activates a return mechanism when the needle moves quickly at the end of the record. It's basically a slip clutch that slips during normal play but engages when it moves quickly when the end of the record is reached. The clutch might have gotten gummed up and now it engages all the time, causing the needle to return to the holder.

My first job back in 78, On payday's i'd buy at least 3 albums, A new Tshirt, and smoke the rest of it Lol!! Here's a lil tip: Put a coin on top of the Stylus if the album has a skip in it. Still have all the vinyl i bought. No Disco!! ACDC to Zeppelin. I've been searching for a good turntable and haven't played these albums for at least 12 years.

i gotta take my turntable apart and fix it.. something is wrong inside...
like when I hit play the arm doesnt go all the wall to the record.. it lowers it down like half an inch before it....and also it doesnt stop turning when the arm is back in the resting position anymore...
but i mean i can handle doing it by hand... except for under shifts of consciousness.. then its gets all messed up...

I'm a fanatic, I must admit. It seems as though that crackly sound that comes from a phonograph is the true sound of music, the true meaning of it all.
My favorite part about getting a new record is looking on the inside rims and seeing if something is inscribed there. The craziest phrases are written on those inner rings, but you'll only find it on an original pressing. One of the first albums that I got, a Foreigner LP, has "'Up to the Sky' Roman" on one side and "Welcome Christopher" on the other. It just kind of makes you wonder what those little insignificant phrases really mean.
My records are the one thing that I own that I would do anything for. It's obsessive, but they're kind of a symbol of a time that was more simplistic and less focused on technology...

so yeh i think i can sum it up like this:

Digital = Sound waves
I got rid of my vinyl because I was moving to a MUCH smaller space and CD's simply take up less space. I sold some of my vinyl cheap to friends (who I think have held on to it) and mailed the rest to my best friend for a birthday present (but he died and I can only hope he enjoyed them while he was on the planet.)
That said, vinyl does sound warmer than CD's. I've heard that an audio DVD is supposed to be clearer (each moment of sound broken into more bits) than a CD. However, hearing is an analog experience just like vinyl is an analog form of music storage. Maybe that's why I do prefer the sound of vinyl. Also, playing vinyl is more of a physical experince than playing a CD (although, CD's respond to queing when drunk much better than vinyl does) At least that's my take on it.
