The only people who really freak out tend to be those who haven't really come to terms with it and still calling yourself "queer" is somehow making a statement. These people officially don't count, and by offending them you're actually doing a public service.

I generally find it's just the way people move, little things about them that you notice. There's still a middle ground of people where you're not sure either way, but I'd say a sizeable majority of people conform enough to the stereotypes that you can be 99% sure.

But now I'm out, I have a monogamous relationship which seems to be going well, and he has met with my son and friends. They got on very well. It was a very good day!

Example:
In middle school, when there was this new girl who used to talk about how she kissed girls and stuff...
I could tell by the look on my best friend's face because I know her well, and I could see the little smile on her face and I knew it was something she had no problem with and was almost looked curious.
Compared to all the other girls who looked at that chick weirdly, me and her became good friends with that girl.
And by my friend's facial expressions and reactions to certain stories I could tell she was into girls. And eventually we ended up dating. :)

calisouth, i'm just as confused. i don't find it entirely inconceivable that some people can just sense it, but i am certainly not one of those people. i think if you really want to know, and you evaluate the situation as objectively as one could (meaning don't assume someone is gay simply because you WANT them to be - a mistake i've many one too many times), then its not so difficult to read the subtle "signs", whatever they may be.

some are obvious and some are not. i'm openly gay any way. i'm not masculine and although i'm not feminine, i do carry a lot of feminine traits and characteristics.

i find it very hard to be able to tell if someone is gay. unless they're really feminine and flamboyant, it can be real tricky. not every masculine guy is straight and not every feminine guy is gay. with this being said, i normally don't even worry about it. most men are on a DL any way (in the closet). i prefer to talk to guys that are open with their sexuality. i don't have time to be trying to figure out a guy. i usually just flirt with guys or i may ask them if they are straight or gay depending on the guy and the atmosphere. i am very straight forward when it comes to sexuality. however, straight people have the upper hand. men can easily and more freely holla at women any and every where. gay men can't do this.
