Okay, so we have to write a ten page essay in Canadian History and after grueling over a blank sheet of paper for two hours it came to me. What is more Canadian than Bob and Doug McKenzie! I was going to write it on the significance of folk music in relation to Canadian culture but that is far too broad a subject. Anyway, I'm just trying to think up a thesis statement but I'm a little stumped so if anybody has any ideas, please, let me know as soon as possible.

Take off!

You know, there's something to be said for a country whose inhabitants admit that it's history is really a pretty dull affair. No civil war, no invasions, not many of the upheavals that we've had in the US. Countries that have that kind of history tend to be quiet, decent places to live, if the people that are currently running the country don't screw that up (hopefully they won't). I've got a degree in History but I'm not sure I'd know what to write about-well, what about the development of the country's National Health Insurance system?-I think that's a pretty big thing. In America we always see these things on the media (and real life) about the plight of people that don't have medical care-you don't have that problem in Canada. Or you could write about the country's involvement in WWI or WWII-maybe you could find some aging (like over 100) WWI vet to interview-before the very last one kicks the bucket. Anyway, I hope that helps.

Canada's history isn't so great, though, after all, we were racist bastards with an alcohol problem (although I've always blamed my love for a brew on my Canadian heritage).

Perhaps your thesis could be how we embrace our stereotypes and enjoy a good laugh at ourselves.

Acutally, along that lines you could move your topic to the history of Canadian comedy as a reflection of ourselves. Starting from Wayne and Shuster(sp?), SCTV, Smith & Smith ( and later on Red Green ), Kids In the Hall to a now flourishing industry that includes This Hour, Airfarce and the like. You also have the Just For Laughs comedy festival. We got a knack up here for skit comedy and humour in general seems to be one of those defining characteristics of the 'True Canadain'

Now pass me my back bacon, hoser.
