About Betty Friedan: Betty Friedan was born Betty Naomi Goldstein in 1921 in Peoria, Illinois. She graduated summa cum laude from Smith College in 1942, and then received a research fellowship to study psychology as a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley. She married Carl Friedan in 1947, and worked as a freelance writer while raising their three children.
Friedan began to feel stifled in her role as a housewife and in 1957 sent out a questionairre to her Smith classmates. The responses indicated that many of the women were dissatisfied with being wives and mothers. Friedan took these results and upon further investigation and studies - wrote The Feminine Mystique, which sold over 3 million copies.
In 1966 Friedan helped found the National Organization for Women (NOW) and became its first president. Under Friedan's leadership NOW worked for political reforms to secure women's legal equality. Friedan was also among the founders of the National Abortion Rights Action League in 1969. In 1971 she was among the feminist leaders who formed the National Women's Political Caucus.
Friedan has published multiple books and still remains a voice in feminism, women's rights and equality for women.

Ay, ay, ay! Sloth--say it ain't true! Betty Friendan, who nobody remembers now, will be remembered by no one in the future. This ridiculous old frazzle should have been put in a used-bourbon barrel and launched into the Ohio River.
She was even uglier than Sue Anthony.
Just the fact of recalling this hatchet-faced dum-dum makes me ashamed of my brain-cells.
Am I clear?

Looks have nothing to do with anything. I was wrecked as usual, just hoping to agitate the herd.
But, seriously-- name ONE thing she ever wrote that is pertinent or memorable.
Even a lame-ass band like The Archies will be remembered long after she.

{I thought it was worth a mention~
There are not too many people left,
women especally that were feminist
leaders,fighters for womens rights!
I don't see anything wrong in this mention as
if it were not for these woman we would still be living in our
mother's time where they had no rights at all~
My mother was raised to believe that she was good only
in the kitcken and bedroom~
She could not wear pants, spoke only when
my father said, could not voice her opinion about anything
and had to live under my father's rule~
She could not go to college,or work and if ahe
did she did work there was no equal pay for the same job,
Back in the day woman were getting abortions in back
room tourture chambers where they would rip the
kid ourt with coat hangers, and were labled
as a bad girl for the rest of her life~
I am proud that we had some of these
woman to speak up for our equality,
and THUD~maybe you can't understand
because you are not a woman~
But if it were not for these movements
there would be no movement for gay's and
other movements in this day and time~
Our fight was not only in protest of the Viet Nam War~
We as woman had a personal fight for freedom and
equality and we were not gonna take the physical
and mental abouses anymore!}
Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug
Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Marilyn Monroe,
Helen Reddy, Judy Collins, Bonnie Raitt,Grace Slick,
Mama Cass Eliot,Stevie Nicks~
Germaine Greer,Emma Goldman was known
as a rebel, an anarchist, an ardent proponent
of birth control and free speech, a feminist,
a lecturer and a writer
Feminism is the belief that women and men
should be treated as equals, but the definition of "equality" can differ widely. To the individualist, equality means identical treatment under laws that protect person and property. It is an equality of rights, not of results. If women cast a ballot as men do, then women's political will has been actualized even if no females are elected. ...
feminism:
Contemporary feminism in the West > The “second wave” of feminism
The women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s, the so-called “second wave” of feminism, represented a seemingly abrupt break with the tranquil suburban life pictured in American popular culture. Yet the roots of the new rebellion were buried in the frustrations of college-educated mothers whose discontent impelled their daughters in a new direction. If first-wave feminists were inspired by the abolition movement, their great-granddaughters were swept into feminism by the civil rights movement, the attendant discussion of principles such as equality and justice, and the revolutionary ferment caused by protests against the Vietnam War.
Women's concerns were on President John F. Kennedy's agenda even before this public discussion began. In 1961 he created the President's Commission on the Status of Women and appointed Eleanor Roosevelt to lead it. Its report, issued in 1963, firmly supported the nuclear family and preparing women for motherhood. But it also documented a national pattern of employment discrimination, unequal pay, legal inequality, and meagre support services for working women that needed to be corrected through legislative guarantees of equal pay for equal work, equal job opportunities, and expanded child-care services. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 offered the first guarantee, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was amended to bar employers from discriminating on the basis of sex.
Some deemed these measures insufficient in a country where classified advertisements still segregated job openings by sex, where state laws restricted women's access to contraception, or where incidences of rape and domestic violence remained undisclosed. In the late 1960s, then, the notion of a women's rights movement took root at the same time as the civil rights movement, and women of all ages and circumstances were swept up in debates about gender, discrimination, and the nature of equality.

Sloth, I read every word of your post (do I get compensated later for that feat of valor?)
I assume you think I'm an uncaring, male chauvenist (sp?),fascist pig.
Wrongo.
I have three daughters (as well as a son), three grand-daughters (and two grandsons) and I've always taught the women in my life that they could be anything they wish to be. So far, they've chosen to work, but also bear children and make a nest.
Good.
As you probably know, I've published a novel, "A Haven From Violence", by Burl N. Corbett. What you may not know, is that I dedicated it to two of the most influential women in my life: my paternal grandmother and my high school English teacher.
My grandmother was born in 1895, quit school to help support her family, and went on to be a one-room-school teacher, an Air Raid Warden during WWII, a bank clerk and a pillar of her family, bearing 3 kids (one died) during the Depression. She taught me to read at the age of 4.She later, exposed me to Mark Twain and Hemingway. She taught me how to plant potatoes and butcher chickens. She played excellent piano. She was of the church, though I wasn't. God rest her soul.
My high school English teacher, Ethyl Lipnack, was Jewish-- her parents died in the Holocaust. She saw something in me and encouraged me to write. I was well on my way to becoming a juvenile delinqunent (sp?) when she took me under her wing. I attended her funeral wearing a Jewish cap (I forget the name of it).
This is only a short synopsis, but believe me Sloth, I'm pissed!
BTW--All these people that you mention, yes I know them, they're quite lame.
Jane Fonda is a goddamn traitor, and where is Ayn Rand on your list of famous women?
Also, why is it so important that women have the dubious "right" to kill their babies in a doctor's office rather than in a back-alley where most heinous deeds are committed, anyway?

HeyThud~
I believe in abortion and a womans
right to choose or not to have children!
Both of my daughters were on the pill and patch
when they turned 13~
But some parents are not cool with their kids
and they turn to the street for smarts~
If raped, insest,or just not taking care~
Why bring an unwanted child into this fu-king world?
Why should a mistake ruin a womans life
What if the kid is a retart?
An Amino Santisis can show if the kid is normal~
I for one would want to know if the kid is normal and if not
I woould abort~
Why not in a clean,sterile,enviroment?
We woman deserve much more than what this male
dominated pig nation has to offer~
We still are the niggers of the world~
I am happy to have helped my kids and their friends through
the male stigma and show them that they can do whatever they
want!
The days of laying on one's back and cooking are over!
What ever women femanist leaders that I left out
I am sure the women on this board can fill in~
We are women hear us roar~
United we stand,divided we fall!

We can abort the weaker ones and thus create a master race.Abortion is a product of the me generation and has been an out for many a man who didn't want to be responsible.Rape ,incest and retardation should be no excuse for the wide spread killing of babies.

Abortion has always been a mixed up issue.Propagated by man to the sorrow of many woman giving up their children due to economic pressure. The man don't care,he's off the hook. It's the woman who gets gutted.

How did this turn into a debate about abortion.. was that all our cause was about, abortion.. I didn't think so at the time, still don't. It was a much broader spectrum of change that was needed to balance out 'It's A Mans World" propaganda thing. Put in place by, you guessed it, 'men'. Their secretiveness and their ego to rule ultimately. They met in sceret bc their women would have kicked their ass if they would have known the diabolical plan to exclude women from, politics, religion, biz'ness etc.
Chew on that a while.. heh heh..

A Voice..OMFG.. our voice is what makes them cringe in thier boots..I believe our 'voice' is called "Bitchin" or "Whinin".. and they wonder why they remain womanless, alone and drunk!! Oink Oink!! How many babies did you produce and leave behind.. any of you dudes that had unprotected sex in the 60/70s.. women know how many they have. Men have no idea, they hopped from bed to bed donating sperm and off again to their next conquest or back home to their regular 'ole lady'.. sad but true..
I was typing the names of the women that roam these halls but I would have been typing names for an hour, the ones that will beg to differ from the oinks point of veiw, we are many and we have gained power from unity over the milinium. We will be reconed with. We still out number men 5 to 1 universaly. Talk about armogeddon.. we could surely bring it about if we did choose to.
Man makes war through chaos, Women create peace with order.
Y'all get a clue about reality and come out of your caveman ways of thinking. Take responsiblity for what man has done and cowboy the fuck up.
Like you really care if a woman in Africia has an abortion or not. I hear no wisdom from these words you speak.
Of course they don't like the spokeswomen for our gender, they feel threatened that the truth will be known and their covers will be pulled. Little do they know that we have been hip to their jive for 50 yrs and can bring them to their knees at anytime. Some are already on their kness, some are above the ego but the ones whom I speak of know who they are and know I speak the truth, so does Carol and so does EM.. I could go on.

Let's get something GODDAMN STRAIGHT!, heifer and sloth: as I said before, I don't give one flying fuck what you split-tail ball-busters do. (The evil bitches in my life--my mother and her worthless daughter-- have been going out of their way for over 40 years to make my life a living hell. When they only semi-accomplished it, they turned their scheming, controlling ways towards my 4 kids; didn't work-- they dislike the Gruesome Two-Some, too.)
I'm getting off- track.
Excuse me, but how does the right to slaughter babies at will have ANYTHING to do with "women's rights"?
Is this what feminism is about? Their right not to be inconvenienced by a baby when they could be going to clubs, instead?
HORSESHIT!
1. Don't have sex.
2. Use birth control.
3. Give it up for adoption.
AND DON'T GIVE ME THESE TIRED, INACCURATE OLD CLICHES ABOUT INCEST, RAPE, ETC!
Give me facts-- just how many cases of this actually happen? Damn few.
And, Sloth-- you mention aborting handicapped kids, I guess you mean what they used to call "Mongoloids", I forget the new politically correct term.
Fuck you, you potential killer-- I've known two, and both were perpetually happy, loved by their parents and one was an idiot savant-- never forgot a name, address or phone number.
I'd like to shoot my sister and mother, but I don't do it-- even if it were legal.
That's the difference between you and I-- I believe in moral laws, and I believe in God and karma.
You, obviously, believe in your oh-so-important-lives and to hell with the rest, especially the helpless.
We'll see who is right.
In the meantime, I will do everything in my power, short of violence, to stop baby-torture and murder.

I believe in abortion~
I am not a murder-er~
I am a realist!
This world is tough enough,to bring in
unwanted babied healthy or not!
It's our body and out right to choose!
Don't you presume to know me or try to cut me down
to size or under your thumb~
Because if you want some of a Brooklyn Bitch

The last time I was afraid of a man was when I
was 18 and my father punched me through the
kitchen wall fracturing my jaw, then throwing me
out all because I came home late and it had to be
his way or the high way~
I never looked back and got street smarts fast!
You are NOT a woman~
I have lived in Greece,as well as Guatemala,
Central America...
You wanna talk about insest and rape that
occurs on a daily basis?
You wanna visit orphanages where tons
of babies wait for loving arms?
You wanna see tons of women with tons
of children begging in the streets for a hand out?
Have you ever besides the two that you know
being retarted seen how it is in mental instituations?
I worked in one!
What happens when their care taker dies or the money runs out?
Ever wonder THUD?
They are left in their own mess, neglected and beaten and abused!
Is this what right to life your fighting about is all about?
I have three c-sections you fool!
Try having your body cut to bits and have to suffer the way
I did to bring children into this world!
Did you know that in Africa the woman there in
certain tribes have their clit cut by tribes men!
so not to feel pleasure~
Did you know that in some tribes there the
young girls there have their
vagina practictly ripped apart having to go
through banishment because of a leakage
problem because their vagina won't close properly?
Go to hell you prick!
Your head is so far up your ass you don't have a
clue what the hell you are talking about!
Thank God for women like Betty Freidan

Have you ever killed ANYTHING, Sloth? I've killed, perhaps, thousands of animals and fish. I've never enjoyed it, but it was done for a good reason-- to eat.
Answer my question-- why can't you maligned, put-down, terrorized poor little dears bear those innocent babies and put them up for adoption?
WHAT? 9 months of anguish, inconvenience, and looking fat?
People like you actually make me ill--physically and spiritually.
Rest well in hell.

Just like your free to do what you want with your penis as long as you don't force it on anyone else.
I can see your dislike/disrespect for women in general, but all women are not like your mother and sister thudly.. some of us do care and do love..don't condem us for what your mother did to warp you and turn you into a sour ole woman hatin' drunk. I started this topic as a reminder to everyone
how far we still have to go in fighting for our rights~
Betty Freidan was one of many freedom fighters as
well as a feminist~
I think that we are all intitled to our opinions~
On a personal note though,I can say that if I ever met Thudly
in person,he would have to deal with my base ball bat
down his throat before ever insulting another woman again~
he is the lowest low life I ever had to deal with and he is
so simple minded that he didn't even take the time to
ead what I had to day really,
for if he did,he would have known that I said
that women in certain African tribes did not have their clits shaved
but practally cut off so that they could not know pleasure~
If he had read my post he would have also realized that I did have 3 children by c-section~
Cut to shreads to bring life into this world~
Abortion is not for everyone, neither is keeping a retarted child~
If that's your choice that's cool, but not everyone can handle it~
I am no one's judge~
I won't be judged either!
I will stand my ground and defend my beliefs~
But It's a womans right to choose
what she does with her body!
Thudly you are way out of line here and a pig too!
Last time I looked I woke up a woman,
what the hell does that make you Thudly?
Saying that you hate your mama and sister!

don't accuse me of being a christian war monger.Let me put it another way.Nothing makes killing another human being wrong except our morals.i don't know if they are christian morals or what.i didn't make them up,somebody else did.The same thing for stealing, child abuse, woman abuse and on and on.Now if i decided these morals didn't work for me,would i have a right to do whatever i wanted. It's my body and it has a right to your stuff.Actually the biggest liberator of woman alive today was g.w.(groan) when he invaded Iraq.Vaginal castration as bad as it is was nothing compared to how some of the women in that part of the world were and are treated. Not sure how abortion's supposed to stop that.i was raised with strong women.Like i said we're all in this together, men, women, and babies...

My generation benefits from the examples of women who have struggled to be recognized as people who are moral and intelligent enough to make decisions about their own bodies and their own lives. Women's rights has come a long way since when Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique, and it's mostly due to people like you, Shameless, Sloth and Earthmother. Still, there are some women who allow themselves to be dominated by the men in their lives (or the men in Congress), and so suffer through painful abortions and unwanted pregnancies in secret, or abuse from husbands or boyfriends or fathers. And there will probably always be men and women who don't think that other people are smart or moral enough to make important decisions for themselves without interference from the government, or the perceived moral majority. Women still have a long way to go, but I'm glad that my generation has the guidance and examples of women like Betty Friedan, and all of the other intellectual, fearless, beautiful, assertive, creative and dignified feminist women =D

Geez...I seldom venture anymore into the "public forums prefering the personals as usually much more free from abusers of all levels
Being a man... well not all come from the same places
And beleiving in womans rights in the Now, over the rights of what mayor may not be - the right to say what happens in their bodies - Abortion - shit nobody like it and when we have better means we use it... but sometimes a woman makes a choice and often is pushed into it byothers... And sometimes the worst thing that can be said is that woman are the real upholders of the status quo the real educators, the real movers and shakers - and sadly the ones who really help continue us on this sad road of annihilation of the species.- and I have even worse to say about man
Generalizations never work - AND when we consider individuals I have little but praise for all when they follow their own drummer rather than marchin lockstep with any "majority"
Buttos get pushed every day - don't mean we have to respond in kind ??
Now usually I just lurk around and keep y mouth shut - don't know what happened this morning. hmmm.....
Think highly of you all for sayin your piece, just wish we could spell it peace
And even during the free love season many did not partake - or maybe it was just a few - some of us who were called hippy were much more seekers, trying to find our own Way within, rather than following the popular crowd of the day.
But that's OK ma....- I never did fit in much of anywhere - just happy to be able to call you friends, and not takin it personal i don't have to bleed all over you
- Have a great day
lovin you all
Kepp on a growin - really don't have to be painful - an be a joyous project - but sometimes being man (generic for the species - sorry ladies) maybe the bumps and falls make it easier to remember - just that some of the mistakes are pretty damn hard to get over, and the ramification of the mistakes being made to the planet could well spell our doom.
Change she is a comin
praise the dear lady earth - that she will survive and continue - though man may not -
o I just love the puns we can make with this man as a species thing - we can lay it all at man's doorstep hehehee.... I am not man - I am Spirit who has incarnated in this Now as a man for the lessons it I can draw better to myself within that orientation. As a woman ... well you'd best not fuck with me because you'd end up a hurtin. I will be no ones victim - especially not my own !
Ok Ok See y'all in the by and Bye

Its been so long since I ventured into a forum feeling so compelled to respond. So may I offer my thoughts, and love.
I feel what these women were saying is,{ Look in the mirror of our creations. There is still time to change. }
When we judge anothers steps without walking in their shoes we are only facing a part of ourselves we have yet had to live, or have lived, and remember not what we did.
I have faced personally decision on abortion, rape, incest, and abuse. We can hold up the mirror, and see the victim, or see the abuser. Or we can reach beyond these roles, and run toward peace for all. The only way to do this is to learn from what we know, and have been faced with. When these things are no longer acceptable, and toleratered within ourselves, maybe we can stand back from the emotional reaction, and use the power within us to change the world.
When we become aware, we can become what we choose to be. My heart ached with sadness, and furor, asking me why I have not stood on the front lines, and joined many others who have chosen to show us ourselves. I watched the movie Lord of War, and cried out with rage. We are our own enemies, and or peace maker.
To point fingers does no one any good. To write, and say only words can be empty. But to live what we know to be true is to embrace the greater path of love. For what we do to ourselves we do to others. What we do to others we do to our own spirits.
I honor these women for the courage, and strength it took to stand in their own vulnerability, and face the world, not with division, or parts we hold in our pants, but to face us with Humanity, and ask us who we are, and what we are choosing to become.
May we all find wholeness in our actions as we seek to heal so many terrible wrongs. May we all move beyond justifying, blame, and attacks and join as one on the front lines of a new hope, where we can honor more clearly the reflections of our own beings, and becomings. May those who have died show us what we have done, knowing they died not in vain, but for a wholeness, and peace where non need fear. A dream is only a dream until we make the dream real within us. We are the cure for the dis-ease we all have in, and around us. May there be no more war, but peace on each voice as we stand as one.
Impractile. I do not think so. For one voice can make a difference. One life is all a reflection needs to shine from simple honesty, and truth. Choice is our power. Action is our healer, and change is our greatest blessing in all of time, for we are our creations.

We all have to go through the levels of change that overcomes us all..and we overcome ourselves..
Most of us want the same things out of life, A Home a Family, a means of support aka a job..something to do, something to create. Someplace to belong..
We all cry within ourselves for this bond, this unity that connects us with all things perfect. We all strive for perfection and seek LOVE LOVE LOVE.
It truely breaks my heart of hearts to see ones suffering so. So little respect for themselves and others.
Listen to the wise ones my friends, be wise yourself, place not blame on others but look to yourself for the answers.. Be still and listen.
WE honor Betty Friedan and the eork she did to free women and the oppressed, we honor her with our being true to ourselves. Bless Betty and all he women that stand for freedom. And Bright Blessings to the men that can see beyond their own EGOs.
Lay the ball bats down, lay the hostility down, lay down the wicked tongues that wag their hurtful, distructive spew. Find the guidence you seek in ones you respect. Know the truth when you hear it and stand the fuck u and support us, or sit the fuck down and shut up. If your not part of the sulotion, then you are part of the problem..
Off to work I go.. Hi Ho Hi HO..
Be Sweet..

What happenned to 'free speech?'
I ask myself that same question more and more these days it seems.
'Free Speech'....seems the crap that flows out of some cars when I am at the gas station(which some call RAP 'MUSIC') is more respected than difference of opinion.
This is always a heated debate...never matters where you are in real time or on the cyber highway.
Thing is, no matter what your opinion is about it there is another opinion waiting to get heated up about it.
BUT at this time it is NOT against the law. And that should be respected. It is fine to voice your opinion but do NOT expect to get anywhere other than into an argument when you do. So when it happens...what next. DO you EXPECT to change minds instantly by name calling and threats????
Just where does that get you?
Seems the more I scream and threaten about a point the more lost my point gets and I end up looking like a screaming meemee.
any idea you may be trying to get across...gets ignored and your branded a hot head or banned off a site.
Yeah I get pissed. PLENTY.
But I really try to pick my battles anymore. Some stuff is just not worth getting riled up about. ANd certainly what someone in cyberland expresses as their opinion is not worth getting nutty over.
If you have such a strong opinion, and its a craw in your side, put it where it counts. Do something physically (and I don't mean violently) to put it out there so laws are changed.
In debate where all sides voice their own take on it and exchange ideas and tips and everyone walks away hopefully with something to mull over and even if they still disagree they at least have the common coutesy to realize that not everyone shares in what may seem obviously correct to them.
I posted a memorial thread to someone who was very special to me awhile back...and here came someone who had something rotten to say.
Yes, it hurt me a bit.But what they said had nothing to do with me unless I embraced it and made it mine and I chose not to. ANd now it does not hurt so much. It was theirs.
So heck......anyway thats what I wanted to say.

and you said it.This too was also a memorial thread. Not a dissucusion of women's rights, not an abortion debate, not batting practice,a memorial.Maybe we all should treat it as such.Betty Friedan R.I.P.

I frequent several different forums, and Ive got to say that I think cabin fever has something to do with it. People are getting sick of being cooped up and they have too much time on their hands, (some of them have problems to begin with) and if they tend to be that type, well, they tend to turn into rabble rousers. I do it too, sometimes. We can all forgive a little verbal indiscretion, Im sure. The trouble comes when people are trying to discuss a subject, and someone gets so radical in their replies that it detracts from the conversation to the point where everybodys arguing and no one can even follow the thread any more.
Hell, sometimes I think that some folks get on forums just because they want somewhere to complain and nothing else. There was some issue with negative posts dominating the Rainbow forum, and so I put up 3 positive posts to counteract them, but everybody was so wrapped up in the disagreements that my posts were only answered by one person! Im glad that some of the folks Ive found here are easier to communicate with than that! Thank heavens for you ladies.

Bright Blessings Ladies, Gate and welcomed guests.
As we originals grow older there becomes less and less of us each year. In 20 yrs or so we will be no more, our generation will pass and make room for the new ones coming up after us.
What are we leaving them to go by. What lessons are we teaching them by our actions. What images are we creating in their minds. What message are we sending out. Can we bring about change when we can't even get along at a memorial.
No one can force another into their beliefs. You can certainly talk about issues and agree or not. We all have our own paths to follow or Karma if you will, to live out.
I don't think we should drag personalities into it. We are have our own pain. It's how we learn. The more it hurts, the deeper the message.
Some pain comes out in harsh ways. Directed outward bc it's too much to hold it inside. It spews out like black decay seeking out a place to land. It creates chaos and consumes the Spirit bringing hopelessness and dispare.
I think we have all felt this kind of pain some time or other in our lives. EM is right.. forgiveness is the key to being forgiven. We can get past it in unity and love Love LOVE.
