On the rusty plain, the interminable distance

Gazed out at me across time and memory.

The ancient thermals hugged the storied land,

Building red ghosts that wallowed across the field.

The echoing beat of dead warriors is played across the

Soundscape of time and sorrow.

Their red sacrifices are now one with the land.

They who bowed to the pale faced savage.

The granular dust disintegrates in my hand.

As it falls, I hear names rise with the wind.

Sand Creek, Pine Ridge, Wounded Knee.

Scattered particles are what remain now.

In the recesses of our minds,

Far from the cruelties of man,

There live the last reservations.

There, the native ways burn bright.

In these places, they are free.

Free from relocation.

The Red man’s burden

Vanishes like the shifting winds.
