hey guys,
I will be leaving for california in early feb. by way of amtrak from new brunswick canada, just wondering if anyone has any tips on what to see, were to go, what to do,safe places, things to look out for, anything.......

the plan is to just go and camp around, start off in san fran--really no plan just drift around... any advice on cheap rides around cali?
any help would be appreciated

yes, i have advice, having just gotten back from san fran for the first time.

stay at a hostel in the city. i stayed at one called the green tortoise, which was amazing - clean, fun, safe, and generous. really righteous people. $20 per night, or you can work and earn your board for free. you wouldn't be able to camp within san fran, so you might wanna look into it.

the busses seem good; i just took the MUNI round san fran and it was cheap and efficient. don't know about the other places in cali. good luck!

how much cash you got? if you have more than 5k for the trip, then you really only need to wander around spending it

if you're on a budget, I'd recommend going to humboldt and finding a job manicuring herbs :)

or just go there for the amazing beaches

For camping/backpacking, head inland from San Francisco, i.e. Yosemite.
