Im going to rub my hair/head in a clockwise motion with some wool. Has anybody ever tried this method befor? Even though my hair is thick and curley my hair just wont lock up on its own through neglect.

all hair (no matter what type) will lock up through neglect if given time. some types of hair just takes longer than others. ya just gotta be patient.

my boyfriend couldnt start seein locks (or noticeable ones at least) well past a year after he stopped combing/conditioning his hair. his goal wasnt really dreadlocks. he just stopped caring and then when locks ended up forming, he became attached to them.

Yeah I decided against the wool thing b/c I read that the dreads come out in so much diffent sizes that it wont look to good. Im just going to stick to neglect.
Whats a good residue free shampoo that I can buy in stores?

Damn, I had long hair (enough to have crazy dreads) and I cut it all off... I totally regret it. Now I have to wait about a year again and I can finally try it again. I think my hair would be perfect for dreads cuz it's really really thick and really knotty and scruffy (at least it was when it was long)

I have the opposite problem, mine are forming on the back but not the sides, i figured this was because I slept on the ones which have become better developed.

^stfu rastas don't have a monopoly on knotted hair. knotted hair was around long before idiots like leonard howell and marcus garvey. dreads can mean whatever you want them to mean. what's the point rasta is dead anyways

dont tell me about research kid, i've spent the last 3-4 years researching rastafarI extensively. i've had locks many times in the nazerite tradition. if you would have done some research then you would have known that rastas aren't the only ones allowed to have dreads.you didn't offend me, if you want to discuss rasta, we can do that, but lets face it, it was the hindu people that brought 'dreadlocks' to mainstream rastafarIanism in jamaica. they had dreads for religious reasons for thousands of years before that.

by the way to answer Rasprophecy, i didnt say anything about Marcus until he accused me, i dont know why he did. But yes Marcus said that white people were the devil. Now many rastas today reject this, infact there are a lot of white rastas.

dave, garvey didn't publicly criticize the white race. garvey was a separationalist pan africanist, who hated mixing races together. look up w.e.b. dubois and garvey's comments towards dubois' heritage. he was far from any sort of black supremist. he even spoke with members of the KKK to discuss shipping black americans to africa by the boat-load.

well considering that he was a pan-africanist, then the KKK would have been his biggest ally, wouldn't it?

well considering that that was only one part of his long life. he did a lot for the black american and jamaicans. everybody makes mistakes, i'm sure that what he did he thought was right at the time. i can't defend what he did, but his screw up moments were miniscule next to his accomplishments.

BACK TO THE TOPIC. i have had dreads on and off in my life ever since i was 13.. i first got them and did them myself... but i always said to myself that i would never get dreads without knowing the true reason why i had them and why other people had them.
so i began to do alot of research and i talked with MANY people at different places about rastafari and the connections in life in the mind through nature. basically, in my book, having dreads comes down to the fact that you let your hair go NATURALLY (no wax, no combs, no anything), completely natural, and this is your part in saying to YOURSELF (who could possibly be JAH, who knows, it is up to you, and please do not argue because this is an opinion), that natural and simplicity is a way of life that can be discovered through letting yourself go and combining with nature, and as a result of this beauty, you get dread locks :)
peace,
lisa
