I remember The Love=Ins at Griffith Park and You Pieman. I remeber being at this particular one and don't ask me when, ok you can ask. maybe late 67'or earily, (hey I was trippin' ok) when I was visiting my folks in So Cali.
There were a couple o hundred people all gathered on a hill as I recall, flat on top and perfect for looking out over the beautiful view of the park. There we all were in all our splendor, a kalidiscope of color pulsating to the beat of the music. Smiling faces and eyes wide with wonder and love in our hearts, celebrating life in peacefull assembly. There were booths set up and beautiful people sitting around talking and singing, laughter filling the air like tiny tinkles of bells ringing in chime with the music.
The air itself was thick with Paisley and the scent of Nag Champa and Patchuli lingered on the breeze. The shinning light that eminated above us was eletric blue and lit our Spirits with it's blanket of warmth and love. Tears of joy dripping down melted faces, with eyes twinkling as stars connecting with the universe bursting inside with the glory of Being. The Spiritual Nature of Assembly seeking food for the Soul from the Infanite Source that created us all. The Great Spirit of Enki. Pagan, Christain, Buddist,Jewish, Catholic, all seeking blessings from the ONE that we all came to seek. That ONE being what ever Infinate Energy Source one draws from. It's all the same source and we were bound in Unity.
The energy was so high I guess that it registerd on the rictor scale. As memory serves me, I was sitting in a circle of 'friends' gazing out in the vastness, having fantastic insights, when I noticed something that brought me back to the reality of body. I saw coming up the hill what looked to me like a big black shinny ring that was coming up out of the ground surrounding us all like a big black devoring mouth inclosing us in it's mitts. My heart started pounding as the intuitive alarms started sounding in my very alert brain.
At first I did not know what I was seeing, being sike up on 500 miks of Owzleys best. Then the realization og it all began to reviel itself for what it was. The black mouth turned into to black helmets that coverd the heads and faces of bodys blending down into black uniformed Robot like creatures. They were barirng WMD and coming right for us.
Everything got deathly quite as ones became aware of the negitivity that was overtaking the positivity of our circle of light. Eyes we wide now and the smell of destruction in the air.
People held their places, drawing their children near, we sat waiting, omming and chanting our peace prayers. They came upon us like Locust Decending. They kicked us and hit us with sticks and we stayed strong. They came on and on with their bats and batons randomly striking heads and bodies as they closed in.
There was a commotion over in the booth area and suddenly every one got up and started yellin' and resisting. There was PIE THROWING from the booths. Then the gas bombs started going off and choking us and stinging our eyes. People started running a women were screaming and babies were crying.
I got up and stated looking for my ride and one of the black robots came up and smacked me upside the head with his club. I went down to my knees and blood started pouring down my face. Then they sprayed me with something that stung my eyes and my skin. I immedatly became a fetus and hunkered up in a ball protecting my head with my arms. I felt a kick to my ribs and another blow that caught me in the arm. I can remember laying there crying beging Great Spirit to release me from my tormentors, when all of a sundden I was lifted up and carried down the hill.
I was peekin' heavy by now and I didn't know what the hell was going on around me. I started to panic untill I heard a soft soothing voice telling me I was safe and not to be frightened.. I started to become aware of my suroundings and realized I was inside a vehicle, a bus and there we people hovering around me. I felt a wet cloth on my face and some one was holding my hand, telling me it was ok now. Then they all loaded up in the bus and they took my to Hanover St. in Hollywood and I stayed there with them a few days and then went back to So Cali to my folks for a few weeks.
That was the last time I was at Griffith Park.
(was that you throwing the pies, Pieman)

It could have been 69' the only way I have to judge a time frame back then is by my kids ages. I was childless at the time so it had to be before March of 70' cuz that's when my boy got here. It may have been 69' the more I think about it, cuz when I left my folks in so cali, I went back to The Haight and thats where I got prego with Jomie.
So it was you throwin' them pies?!? Heh heh.

Well maybe I'm on some big ass ego trip too....
I talk a bit about where I have been,lived knew,experienced.
These days it seems my memories are what keep me going.
The ones I can remember at least.
Don't know how old some of the posters are around these parts. Your age is supposed to be listed in your profile according to the powers that be.....oh well.
But any of you who were around in the time frame we seem to talk of much, know that there was ALOT of traveling around.
I for one left foster homes numerous times to hit the road.
I traveled all over the U.S.....
When I have talked of places and things I have been asked to talk more about them...
Some of us LIKE to talk of the old daze and some of like to HEAR talk of the old daze.
Gee thought thats what the forum was for.
And golly gee.....SH started the damn forum, so I guess she can spout off, share, bitch and talk about any freakin thing she wants...as far as I'm concerned.

Hold on' A Little Ego Trippin' Here.. I left Anihiem calif in 66 I was 16 I was into acid and Timothy Leary's Brotherhood. My bro in law was one of his dealers, I got in a lot of 'doors' with him and my sister. I went to Griffith Park several times in my youth. over by the observitory, I went to Love-ins and Sit-ins with friends and sometimes I would just hitch by my self.. I went to the haight in 66 after a bad marriage and lived there on and off for 11 yrs. I tripped around the southwest going from here to there and back to the haight and so cali to see my family. I lived in Texas, Calif., Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Oregon. I know people from all over the place. I've lived in communes with some of the people right here in the forums. I was in the Haight when all the beautiful people were there, before the junkies moved in. I ran into famous and not so famous people, I knew a lot of them from hippy hill before they got famous, I knew them from the streets and the houses, WTF,.. I didn't live in a cave, I lived.. I was where I was and who I was and with and that will always be what it is, my life. Take it or leave it, I'm not forcing it down your throats
And furthermore if YOU or Your Buddies were there you probably saw or knew me. And I don't believe I ever did say I was in the Village. I said I was at Woodstock, The Haight and Griffith Park. I don't see that as an impossible Life Story. Increidable yes, but not impossible. Besides, It's none of my buissness what you think of me.
Brightest Blessings

White Rabbitt,
If you read my past posts you'd know I was with The Church of the Good Earth. I live at 406 Cole on the corner of Oak and Cole. from 71 to 75, I stayed at the Diggers before that for a few weeks in earily 67' I visited Wheelers but don't recall being there. There is a pic of me and a friend of mine 'Patty' walking down Haight St in 68' in Larry Keenan's website, called 'Wild Horses' I'm the blond. I lived with Sister Juniper Odd a cool red haired lady in a wheelchair with a small blonde boy named Steffen, and her ole man was Herb. She took me outta their doorway on Haight St and moved me in with them in 66'. I met my boys father in 68', his name was Cliff. I left Cliff in 71 and moved into Good Earth.
A Lot of living was done in those years, some wonderfull some not so wonderfull, but it was what made me who I am today.
Peace to you Rabbitt

Hippiewise, I think it was Carole King or Ann Murry who sang that song. or NOT..lol..

Sus, hey sista, glad to see your smilin' face. I came across that pix last year when I was doing some research for my book. It's the only one I ever saw of me while I was in The Haight. People didn't like cameras all that well. The anominitity(sp) thing.
All the memorabilea I had from the day, was burned up when my mama's house caught fire in 95'. I had it all in an old steamer trunk stored at her place cause I traveled around a lot. I had a few good pix of some of my pards in the Haight. My sisters have a few old photos of me they took on my visits down to Orange County to see them. I may get some copies and post them in my gallery after the holidazes.

Teepi my friend, I thank you. I don't know why some just want to cause distension in The Garden. Maybe testing the water. sigh.
Writing is a form of art to me, a poetic phrasing of ones life and purpose can be captured in ones words. Having no formal training in writing I simply write what I know about, and I know most about my own life and it comes from my heart of being..
And yes I opened this forum to reach out and connect with Likemined ones that have experienced similar lives, also to reconnect with lost tribe members and family of the time.. We try not to judge others here for their contributions, we of the forums are here to learn and to teach. We are here to grow and we come with love.

Great song! That was Mary Hopkin,a Welsh folk singer who Paul McCartney produced for Apple Records in 1968."Those Were The Days" was based on a Russian folk melody. The record went to #2 in the U.S.,but in the U.K. it knocked "Hey Jude" out of the #1 spot.
And now you know...the rest of the story.

Yes, I was there. I was 16 in 1968 and we would drop, go to the park, then Sunset. These were great times. My brother and I had an apartment on the boardwalk in Venice in 1968 and 1969. I could never eat the food though bro...way too high.
Do you recall the police riot at the Blue Cheer concert/love in over at the Alysian Park side? I got all my front teeth knocked out that day! Yeah, I was there.
Thanks Pieman for starting this thread!

Griffith Park was too nuts. And too close to the LAPD Police Academy. They used the Love-Ins as a training lesson in crowd control it seemed like. Any of you ever meet Wolf Blitzer? He was a Germen conceptual/performing artist who started the Love-ins thing over in Germany. Very cool guy. Hey Pieman were you there when the Airplane and Moodys did a free concert at the park, that turned into just another police riot?
Hef I feel your pain. I got beat down by the LAPD too at Griffith Park. If anyone ever did the Sunset Strip scene, Nancy Dedrick has a sweet site called Hollywood Hangover (www.hollywoodhangover.com). If you get a chance check it out. It almost overamped my head with memories and pictures. I never did the commune thing, and only went up to the Haight occasionally to pick up a gallon of Vitamin L from a chemist, whos name I can't remember. I do remember his pet rat, that lived in the wall but liked dosed sugar cubes. LOL I'm kind of a loner, and was content to be living in Hermosa Beach and dropping sillypsybin and surfing. I don't do crowded scenes to well. I don't have any names to drop. Sorry.

Hey.. I'm just remenissing when I am talking of the past, I'm not trying to "Drop Names' I'm just remembering places, people and things that I experienced back then.. I know not everyone lived life on the edge, but this is my life and I can't help what I have been through and saw and learned. That is what made me who and what I am today, whatever that may be. There are a lot of ones here in the forums that like to hear the stories from someone that WAS there and did do. Some one who did rub elbows with the ones that made it big, and the elbows of the ordenary folks from the neighborhood.. Good Grief, if ya'll was there back then you'd have great stories to tell also, these peeps were not in hidden caves but was on the street and in the parks, and shopping in the local stores, they were part of the neighborhood, one would have to be blind not to have seen them. There were concerts playing day and night back then in the Haight. There were bands everywhere. The Dead lived two blocks from me. The Airplane lived across the panhandle from my house at 406 Cole St. The Panhandle Park was where the Diggers would hand out food, and there were free concerts that I was involved in organizing. Janis was a Haight St. regular as were bb&thc and other now famus bands. Why wouldn't I want to talk about that. Where is the harm. I'm not ego tripping, I'm just trying to share my experiences with ones that are interested.

hey i was at the elysian park gig in 1968 when the cops made their made just before blue cheer was getting ready to play!!! it started when the cops busted some people smoking pot on the hill and all hell broke loose!!! they pulled the same crap again at elysian park in september 1968, the easter love-in in 1969 (remember free acid?), the venice riot on 4/20/69 just before john mayall was fgetting ready to play and newport 69.....

i was at the airplane/moody blues gig at elysian park around early november 1969....it was not attacked by the lapd....it was surveilled by narx on the hill talking to paper bags...i was there w/green power feeeding the freex so that is my recollection....do you recall a fellow dressed as julius caeser mounts the stage which was a flatbed truck to dance during the moodys set?anyway, elysian park was adjacent to the pig school....the lapd were a bunch of crazy rednecks shades of george putnam!!! hey those were the days!!!

I went down to Hermosa Beach once...went to a little club and saw John Fahey play some knock yer socks off slide.
I remember he came out onto a small stage with a 6 pack of 7-up..actually IN GLASS bottles....opened every one of them, gulped one down played and about every once in a while would reach down a drink one in about one gulp...
I got into the Whiskey only once, saw 2 bands...Bones and Sarah.
My daughter is named after one of those bands...no NOT Bones!!
I stayed at Griffith park a bit, then when I had the blessing of a band putting up with me I lent my awesome Navy mummy bag to a guy at the park...I went back after a bit to get it and he had almost burned himself alive in it...fell out with a lit cig...
Man, that was such a great bag....*sniff*
Marry Marry is right....alot of us that traveled around or lived in 'hot' spots at the time ran across people who made it big....and no one is droppin names...just tellin stories and including people you may have heard about.
Heck Soupy Sales tried to pick me up one night at the restaurant I was working at...
I didn't go...afraid of Fang....
At EPP Larry and I had the nicest house up there so it was only natural that we would have some of the people who came up to play stay with us.
Can't help it that some were well known...
I'm always asked to share stories here...so I shall.
No place else to tell them...and if I don't tell them....dust in the wind.

Sorry Hef, I wasn't implying that. It was kind of a subtle jab at an earlier poster suggesting your story was just that. I didn't get that from your post at all. I never gave much credence to the cult of personality that was prevelent back in the day. Too many legends in their own minds, running around, that I never heard of....
Teepi, that little club was probably The Lighthouse which is a world famous Jazz club. Occasionally they would slip into another genre, I saw John Hammond Jr. there, only he was nodding so bad he couldn't find his pick. I tried again a few years later, at McCabes in Santa Monica, and was rewarded with an amazing bottleneck blues experience.
Pieman. Did they (Moodys/Airplane) play there twice? Cause I may be getting a little foggy in the memory department but I do remember that gig and I can still see the little blue prick with the billy club who had to hit me from behind with his other hand on his gun saying "wanna try me punk" like some bad vision out of a Clit Eastwood movie.
Anyway, keep the stories rolling people. I'm lovin' it!

the moodies and the airplane played together at elysian park once in early november 1969....do you remember the easter riot of 1971 at elysian park with all the rookies running down the hills w/o badges?
luvhuffer
12-24-2005, 06:13 AM
Nope sure don't. I remember at one point people started getting hip and getting badge numbers, to use when filing brutality complaints and so the LAPD started trading badges before an action. So you would file a complaint against a white cop badge number so and so, and that badge number belonged to a black cop, or vice versa. You know thinking back on the Moddy Airplane concert I think that the police crap went down afterwards as we were leaving. We were headed to where the car was parked and ran into a skirmish line trying to force us back the way we came towards another line coming from the direction they were forcing us to take. There was so much fucked up shit the pigs were doing back then, that they wouldn't be able to get away with now. Which doesn't mean they are really any better, just not as visible, except when caught on video. Ha ha. I just remembered something. Do you remember the older guy who would dress up like the devil, and had his moustache, gotee, and eyebrows, all waxed up into points? LOL And the undercover cops ( my kid calls them lo pro po, for low profile police, instead of narks) wearing Mexican sarapes and trying not to look obvious while talking into paper bags with their walkie talkies inside? Man every time I read a post here I get this serious rush of memories.

Rabbitt.. names and dates allude me sometimes. The Ace of Cups does ring a bell, but then again, I read the Tarot and see the Ace of Cups quite often. I stayed pretty FUBAR untill I had my boy Jom in 70. I remember much more after that time bc my mind was free from chemical interaction. Mostly organics after that.
I'm sure we crossed paths somewhere along the pathway. There were SO many people in the Haight and so many drugs everywhere. Music was coming from all directions at once and everybody had beards and long hair...lol.. I see pictures of people I knew back when and I would never reconise them on the street today, we have all changed so much. I hardly reconise myself anymore.
As I sit here remenising of days gone by, it does joggle the mind and more memories surface. I see little snapshots of places and people in my head and I remember. It lingers in my subconscious mind teasing my brain.
Brightest Blessings to you Rabbitt

Hey Carol,
I did wear Peasent Blouses and long colorful skirts, I also wore a pair of Red Leather Pants with a Balck Velvet Shirt. I did the thing with the inserts in the legs of jeans to make them bellbottoms too, humm lets see. I wore a Long Orange Tapestry Dress with slender straps and very low cut with sandles.. there was a time or two I wore nothing at all :O :P. I had a lot of nice expensive clothes but they got absorbed into the commune.
There will come a time Carol when we shall all be togther and sip on Ambrosia, Food of the Gods. We shall laugh and sings songs of love and beauty as we embrace each other in Spirit. (and when I win the lottery n the physical).
Brightest Blessings Sister Carol

Well LUV,
I had the cutest pair of jeans with leather and suede patches all over them.
I found a huge bag of scaps behind some kind of shop in Santa Monica and sewed a ton of patches on a bunch of peoples clothes.
Then when I hitched back to Vermont I stayed in PA. for a few days with some groovy people and we went horse back riding...ALL day.
When I took of my jeans that night...AAACCKK!!
That leather had rubbed 2 big boo boo's on my buttocks...yep, still have the scars.
My main accesory was...flowers in my hair...I even stayed in SF for 2 nights....
Long dark brown hair, light green eyes...5'4"...thats all you get...

AH HA HA HA HA HA!!!!
teepi the boo boos on the buns is more than I need to know. I only wore Seafarer Bell bottoms from the surplus store, (the ones with 20" bells or something like that). Then it was a tee-shirt and my suede jacket that I wore until it deteriorated. My only accessory was a fresh daisy in the lapel, and a silver fork in the back pocket to fluff the fro. Oh ya, and my hash pipe belt buckle.<g>

Teepi, I love patchwork pants. The original hippie pants.. Patches upon patches. All that is coming back now ( not that it really ever left), I see the kids buying pants with holes and patches on them for 60$ and up. I get jeans from the free store and put patches on them for the kids. I fuss when I buy them new pants and they drill holes in them to look cool. I guess it's true that everything comes back into style about every 25 years or so. There's nothing new under the sun.
Luv, Great Picture and Teepi is right the dasiy is an execelent touch.

I had several of brothers and sisters from the Haight gonna come in, but they saw all the BS that came with the forums they held back. I do have a dear old sister from the Haight coming to visit me fron SoCali on the 12th.. I'm so excited. I will teach her how to pull up the forums and show her how it works while she is here and maybe she will decide to come in and share some stories with us, she has a ton of them.

SH. He has Hep-C? Shit! Do you know where he is living? I'll hook him up with the doctors that got rid of mine, if he's near L.A. I've been undetectable for almost 3 1/2 years. Took me 10 years to get rid of that crap. Quack doctors at big hospitals giving me crap. I swear this is true. One doctor gave me a scrip for multi-vitamins for Hep-C. Thought my exhaustion was due to lack of vites LOL Finally I found a good lady that knew what she was doing. Perseverance Furthers.......

Last I heard he was in Australia I think..but that was a little while ago.
He got remarried and was living over there.
He is a pretty smart guy. Alot of good insight into how big business and our loving goverment has finangled the laws and everything around to screw the regular people of the country and to benifit the upper eschelon...
He has some heavy opinions on how we have been led to believe that certain things ae causing the breakdown of our planet enviromentally while they are not....and led to believe that other things are safe when they are not...the reasoning behind these opinions of course being...greed.

& after seeing your picture circa '72, i remember you under the banyan tree, we lit up together. BUT, remember the guy named Dana who gave the speech after lunch that day...he got us all riled-up with his speech & ended with, "Let's go show those MF'ers" & that was when the march started down Collins Blvd (I think it was Collins) past the burlesque clubs where the glass poster cases were trashed in protest of female sexploitation...etc. Well, wasn't "Dana" actually a fed agent who had infiltrated the yips/zips? He had long blonde hair, big 'stache & stubble beard.

i remember the love-in's at griffith park and at golden gate park in san francisco, man those were the days my friends:
THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIENDS, WE THOUGHT THEY'D NEVER END, WE'D SING AND DANCE FOREVER AND A DAY, WE'D LIVE THE LIVES WE CHOSE, WE'D FIGHT AND NEVER LOSE, THOSE WERE THE DAYS, OH YES THOSE WERE THE DAYS
who sang that song? can't remember, cool ass song
hippiewise angel
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/thosewere.htm
Music & Lyrics: Gene Raskin; performed by Mary Hopkins)
Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days

I was just telling my husband about how the FIRST Love-in in Griffith Park made such an impact on my life and decided to see if anything re:GP Love-ins was on line and found this.
I remember that the first love-in made the evening news in L.A. and I looked at my mother and said "Wow, those are my people!!!". I was only about 14 but I knew from that moment the world would change and that there were also other people that thought differently from the "norm" (When you see what's "normal" do you REALLY want to be "normal".)
I was very lucky (only because of the Hippie Era) to live in L.A. in the 60's and the Bay Area in the early 70's. I did my share of partying and getting High but the best thing about this era is that people, especially young people, really stood up and helped enlighten people to the absurdities of the society - war, greed, hate. discrimination.......... One of the things that makes me the saddest in this world is that at that time I really believed that most people were seeing these wrongs and working to change them. Now I see that a large percentage of the people who professed to want change in the world were just going with the flow and didn't really care or have a clue as to the problems of the world (ie:Bush was "elected" twice - what does tell you about enlightenment).
Anyway the Love-ins in Griffith Park had a large impact on the rest of my life!
Putty

Now I see that a large percentage of the people who professed to want change in the world were just going with the flow and didn't really care or have a clue as to the problems of the world (ie:Bush was "elected" twice - what does tell you about enlightenment).
ah yes...the idealism of our youth in the 60's
enlightenment, liberation, and rejuvenation are closest found between our ears...true then and now...
it's just that back then we were naive enough to think that because we thought we had found the "way" that the rest of the world will most naturally follow...wrong then and wrong now
each human is on an individual journey as well as being part of our group quest as a species....yes, even George Bush travels the same path
dont forget Skwentna that much of our realizations occured with the help of getting high...weed, LSD, mushrooms...God's little helpers that opened our Doors of Perception...they helpes uds see ourselves and our world in a new light
many today are still using these plant helpers and seeing the same things we did...hopefully some of todays research will prove to our lawmakers that although back in the 60's we may have gotten a little too high at times that these plants and compounds can be a key to the liberation of mankind...

I just stumbled into this thread while trying to find the video of the first love in Griffith Park 1967. Clearlight had it posted on their old site but it is now gone still looking.
Had to flashback after reading a bit , Frog has been my nickname since 1957 I Am good friends of the Strawberry Alarm Clock went to school with some and knew a couple since 1962 .
I was born in Glendale and been in the area all my life so before going to all the love ins in Griffith Park and others like Brand or Verdugo park in glendale I was renting horses and riding around Griffith Park since I was about six.
All through JR and Sr high school (Hoover) I surfed and hit all the beaches. later all my friends and I got into the music and spent all our time in hollywood on the strip ect hit all the clubs Hullaballoo was a favorite.
Anyone remember Vito ? if you went by his place the door was open and you walked in otherwise big letters "VITO"
Anyway still in touch with SAC still play some but it's country (go figure) listen to all music --thanks for the flashback. still miss the purple owsley and that clear liquid acid in a vile.
