Didn't he commit suicide? If he didn't, then he should've.

BTW, I'm not on these boards to make friends; I'm here to speak the truth.

abbie is my hero.

my grandma saw him in 1989 (i believe thats the correct year), speaking at a class. She said he seemed like any other burnt out hippie.. But she also isn't really the kind of person to tune into that stuff.

But dude, that movie sucked. Totally misrepresented him. And I'm not the only one to think so. All the reviews say the same. They downplayed things and made him.. not as charasmatic as he was. .. plus I hate vincent d'orfino.

Voided37, You are a fool who takes exception with me-- an original BEATNIK AND "HIPPIE" FROM !966! Who the hell are you to criticize me?

Abbie Hoffman was an idiot. Most of the hippies were idiots. The only reason I'm on this board, is to possibly connect with old friends, and this certainly does not include you.

In the future, ignore my posts: they're not for you.

Rest assured, I shall ignore yours.

Micheal,
I understood your furstration. There is a difference in what you were doing (saying) and what Thudly was doing. Thudly was didrupting the thread and antagonizing the other posters. I asked him to stop, he just wouldn't. I had no choice but to delete the unnessasary comments that were aimed to disrupt.

All I ask in here is to respect others and be cool. If me or Ranger gets several complaints of someone not following the guidlines of this website we have to take care of it, being the Mods here. Neither me or Ranger like to delete or ban or have to deal with crap. We are all adults here or fastly approaching adulthood so can we just try and be cool. I created a Rants and Raves in this forum for ones that want to 'duke it out' to help keep the Garden free of hostilities and bad vibes.
Everyone is not going to agree all the time, but for the sake of the ones that are looking for LIKEMINDEDNESS take the fighting elsewhere.

Well,now that I pissed everyone off, allow me to clarify my thoughts. Abbie was no hero to the thousands of innocent kids he led to Chicago in 1968 where they proceeded to get gassed and their heads beaten in. All he did most of the 60's was incite riots. He, naturally having rich, leftist friends, got bailed right out. The rest of the kids, being poor, street-kids, got to do time in prisons where long-haired boys were preyed upon by the scum of society. And, that's your idea of a hero?

Sorry, I don't see it like that.

maryfairy
11-02-2005, 01:33 AM
He didn't lead the kids to Chicago.. The idea of people going there wasn't his. And it was always ALWAYS their choice to go and participate. Everyone knew by that time what the risks were in protesting.
And if you read Steal This Book, he does offer tons of advice on how to protect yourself in a protest, from simple ideas of wearing the right kind of clothes, to things like writing down your lawyers number on your arm.
And his friends weren't all rich. His bail money was raised. And a lot of money (most of it, in fact) that he made off of speaking and his books was put toward getting lots of kids out of jail. A true hippie helps his brothers and sisters. And he did so.

It seems to me that, when you lose the light in your heart all good things flee from the negitive from which one has chosen. Altho we come to gather here in peace and harmony there will always be obticals to overcome. Like the lost ones stumbling in the darkness, grasping only bitterness as the light leaves them. Like children lost and alone in the night.
The laughter now turned to bitter rememberence against the jagged edge of yesterdays song. To let lifes lessons turn you to stone instead of building a base of knowledge to draw from leaves us exposed to a lower level of consciousness, not using our higher mentality leaves for a 'flabby' thinking process.
Losing ones Spiritual connection takes away Hope and leaves one cynical in their despiration. Heavy hearts drag out the wrost in people, creating a 'woe is me' syndrom which drive men to irrational thinking. To cover up their pain they pick at others to feel less threatened. Their fear turns to addiction to mask itself and is released when the mind looses control over it's own enviroment and EGO steps in a takes over. When EGO steps in, then all hope walks out. EGO being, all consuming and self centered, leaving no room for light or learning..Ego knows everything and it's job is to destroy the body. EGO resists and disrupts the universe flow of wisdom. EGO thinking it is most supream and listens to no one, only itself. There is no unity or brotherhood in EGO. EGO is strictly for itself. EGO does not lend a hand but pats itself on the back with it and says, 'Ha! I showed them who's boss', and then sits alone in the darkness it creates.
It's like the Dark Night Of The Soul. When one isolates theirself, they lose the innerself that keeps them on the path to enlightenment. They lose contact with their higher selves and think with the 'Little Me' that only includes them.
Are these not the ones that need compassion and understanding, the lost desprite souls that cover up their pain by creating diversion at others expence. Is it not up to us to show them a better way and release them from the chains they have bound themselves with. Perhaps it is our own shortcomings that close us off to understanding what we need to be doing. Should we not enbrace our brother who is in pain and in need of love and compassion. Is that not why they were sent to us, so that thay can be healed, and we turn them away in their suffering.
I judge myself harshly as I read over my words. Have I let the negitivty overcome me, is it I who walk in darkness. Do I draw negitivity to me as means of attonement for past failures, or out of guilt for my own shortcomings. Should I search my soul for why I have failed them and not given them comfort. I will have to pray on that one.

Coyotes have no ego.The CIA had more important people to take care of.Abbie was not a threat especially later in life.He was mainly a nusense to them.No reason to kill him.He took what the kids were doing and sold it to straight amerika.Not a dishonerable profession but a self serving one.He tried to extort money from the producers of woodstock,but that was a commercial enterprise and maybe they deserved it.R.I.P.

Yeah, it was....but i removed it. Michael is the one who said what i was referring to, although you also say it in your first post. And i said it also. About having hero's. We should all be our own hero. Maybe we should all say, "He's my legend." Cause as the book, 'When The Legends Die' by Hal Borland says;" When the legends die, the dreams end. When the dreams end, there is no more greatness."
Shameless, we all get tired. We lose our patience. But you spoke a lot of truth. i realized tears ago that as i succumbed to the world that my ego would be made of the ideas that were too sacred to use as manipulaters. So be it. My journey isn't over yet.
i usually don't use the word hero. it gives to much of a pedastal for the person it is applied too. Abbie was someone amazingly beautiful. And I think to learn about his life, and see the beauty he possessed, is a wonderful thing.
i guess i say hero because he saved people. i could say idol. but that sounds wrong too. And, as I'm sure you know, I can't say leader. "There are no Yippie leaders."
he was a man i wish had lived long enough that maybe I could of have met him.

My last word on the subject (thousands of people across cyber-space applaud)-- Abbie and Tom Hayden and the Yippies and thousands of protesters didn't end the war: the middle-class tax-payers finally got tired of financing it; in other words, my parents and their coevals put an end to it. BTW, it was a Republican who finally ended it-- mean old Richard Nixon (not that I love him for it-- he had his own reasons and they had nothing to do with a half-million protesters).

Gee, since I haven't had a drink for two days, maybe I better check the 'fridge!

i totally understand what you are saying, and i agree have, all along. abbie hoffman, along with many others of our generation spoke out against oppression and tryanny. they protested in the only way they knew how. anytime someone is known by the public eye, they are scrutinized. look at john lennon, he got so much bad rap back in the 70's about being associated with the black panthers. i knew many black panthers in oakland, california. i used to go help distribute food to the poor that was provided by the black panthers, they also got a bad rap. i believe our generation helped in so many ways: civil rights, equal rights, human rights and yes, we did help stop the viet nam war and bring down nixon, and i give credit to the two brave men that wrote about watergate in "all the presidents men". it's hard to understand if you weren't there or alive during that time, but it seems to me that the young people on these boards are very willing to hear about our time, that is great. i thank you for all that you have posted, i learned alot about abbie hoffman that i didn't know before.

I'm a little young to know what went on back then (I was only 4 in '68), but it seems to me it was all about fighting against the social order to uphold civil liberties. Sure icons like Abbie Hoffman and Timothy Leary might've seemed over the top in their personal behavior by today's standards, but they laid the groundwork for what (little) freedom we have today. There's always gonna be the right wing nazis who try to take away civil liberties in the interest of the "GRAND DESIGN" using "moral values" as a front, and they'll throw as much dirt out there as they can to discredit the "infidels", but when I look at the positive things the Abbie Hoffman's fought for and what they accomplished, my hat's off to them...

Abbie Hoffman was a lot o things but he was not a pedophile. He was a very chiasmic individual who had a lot of influence. I myself did not care much for the man. He was a major sexist and thought way too much of himself for my and others taste. However, their is no question that he was a master of street theater and a very creative individual. I was a kid when I got to meet him/ hear him speak to a crowd. I have to agree with this preception but I found him to be a great motivator. Yeah, everyone has some defects of character and looking around at so many sheeples I guess he had a bit of a good reason to have such a high opinion of himself at times. Aren't we all a mixed bag of good and bad points after all? Although he was a major influence on those times he was still merely a human being. At least he was busy trying to make some changes.

I used to tell people I was more of a Yippie than a Hippie but many in my age bracket have forgotten that terminology and the younger ones have never even heard it.
The three labels that started back then, hippie, yippie and yuppie. Yuppie was an offshoot from that as well, which seems to have been forgotten by most.

Well, well,well! Welcome Aaron (AKA Pieman)! How are things at 9 Bleecker? How is Dana? I remember you from the 60's-- I lived at 6 Bleecker-- A.J. Weberman lived one floor below me. I used to live at 25 Bleecker with Tom Ward, too. I don't know if you remember me-- I used to deliver the East Village Other every week with the circulation manager, Ron McDonald and I tended the back-issue office on Ave. A across from Tompkins Square Park. I had the old 1950 Chevy with no back seat and used to drive A.J all over the city to get his political pamphlets printed. My name is Burl, I think you and A.J and me ate breakfast a few times at the Polish diner at E. 10th and Ave. A. Or, maybe it was at the Great Jones Street Diner. Can't remember exactly-- too many years.

At any rate, good to know you're still kicking (or, should I say, throwing).

Mmm, venison, we got deer galore out here, I just can't hunt 'em with a gun 'cause I'm too close to "civilization", so I've got a bow, I just gotta get off my lazy ass and practice, and my lady knows how to clean 'em. I used to be a great shot with a bow, but I'm a little rusty these days, gotta sharpen up the skills, 'cause it's really inhumane to put an arrow thru a deer if you don't kill it...can't wait till I eat the fruit of what lies in my back yard...hunting, gathering, that's what we were meant to do...

I don't believe that we were intended to make war and rape, That's not why we were made. We were made to toil in the mines and fields for the GODS. As we became more like the GODs themselves we became unruley and uncooperative. We were left to fend for and govern ourselves as we became ego oriented and selfish like the Gods themselves. But we wern't made to kill we were made to dig. lol..

That's not the same thing at all! I do not mean to offend my brothers and sisters who don't eat meat, I used to be vegan myself, but if you do eat meat as I do, it's far more honorable to hunt your own food, provided it's done in a humane way. Besides, the natural order has been disrupted where I live, predators are extinct, there are too many deer, we got lyme disease issues, and I'd way rather eat something I hunted myself than the questionable product they sell in stores, even if it's "organically produced"...

No disrespect intended, say what you want, but I'm not the monster you portray me to be...

When I was of a rather tender age I ran away to NYC.
This was 1970.
While there I had many adventures...and I've probably forgotten alot more than I remember...
However, there was a man I stayed a short time with...and I can't remember his name...But he ran for something in the political arena, and he showed me newspaper clippings of the race. His platform was "I Have Nothing To Hide" and he actually had some kind of vehicle he would drive around the city in while naked. He stood in parks...probably Thompkins Square and Washington..naked and gave his speeches.
He actually looked like the David Peel guy in your pic of Abbie there, your pieness.

Well it sure would be nice to remember his name.

It amazes me that lying about getting a blow job in the Oval Office (correct you are lurker) is somehow considered an impeachable offense, and yet somehow a preemptive strike based on lies, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, is not, what was that crap about "moral values" again? The Christian Right will win until justice is served...but I digress, this isn't a forum on politics after all...

Freedom, isn't that what this is about?

Freedom of expression in all forms, freedom to bare arms, legs, and the rest of you, and freedom of choice over your own body. Freedom only ends where another's freedom begins...

Getting a blow job in the oval office is not an impeachable offense, if it was almost every president would have been at risk. Lying in federal court is an impeachable offense and that was why clinton was impeached.

Abbie Hoffman

Abbie Hoffman was a leader of the Youth International Party. At trial, Hoffman described himself as "an orphan of America" and "a child of Woodstock Nation." He was, perhaps, the most intriguing figure in Judge Hoffman's courtroom. Hoffman believed that identity is defined by myth propagated through the media.

Hoffman was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on November 30, 1936. He graduated from Brandeis in 1959, then picked up a master's degree at Berkeley. In the early 1960's, he returned to Worcester to work as a psychologist in a state hospital. His career in political activism began with his work for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the South. Hoffman was still relatively straight until 1966 when he turned onto drugs and began the loosely organized Yippie movement.

Hoffman went underwent plastic surgery and assumed the underground alias of "Barry Freed" in 1974 to avoid trial on charges of possessing cocaine. He stayed underground in upper New York state until 1980, when he surrendered to authorities. He was sentenced to a work-release program in 1981-82, then resumed his life of political activism. In 1987, Hoffman was arrested for the forty-second time while protesting CIA recruitment at the University of Massachusetts with Amy Carter and thirteen others.

At a 1988 reunion of the Chicago Seven, Hoffman described himself as "an American dissident. I don't think my goals have changed since I was four and I fought schoolyard bullies."

On April 12, 1989, Hoffman was found dead at his home in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The death was later ruled a suicide.

Steal This Urine Test

Just thought as how i had disrupted the thread subject and the thread is devoted to one of the most influential characters in my life i would bring it back if i could to ABBIE! YIPPIE!!!!!
From 'Steal This Urine Test' back cover....Millions of Americans are already being subjected to a meaningless and degrading urine test for drug use, and millions more are about to join their ranks. Drug testing is now common practice in sports, the military, prisons, one third of the Fortune 500 corporations,and many occupations related to "national security" and "public safety". Politicians and pressure groups are calling for mandatory testing of almost the entire population. Attorney General Edwin Meese has urged employers to keep track of workers not only on the shop floor but in their off-job hours as well.
Now from Abbie Hoffman, America's best known and most consistent rebel-author of the 70's classic STEAL THIS BOOK-comes a substantive challenge to urine testing and the greatest drug hysteria in American history. Claiming the tests are unconstitutional, Hoffman compares them to the "Red Menace": "They have little to do with drug abuse, and a lot to do with controlling workers and weeding out undesireables".
'Steal This Urine Test' is an activist handbook for beating drug tests, as well as a common-sense antidote to much of the misinformation passing as truth about drugs. For workers, students, athletes, and parents, this book champions the Bill of Rights, and raises a challenge to Big Government intrusion.
End of bookcover......

Abbie believed in "Participatory Democracy", that we all have a say in our government and if you don't like what 'their' doing, do your best to change it. Legally if possible, and "BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY", if not. Abbie took on the CIA lawyers and won in court. Abbie was found dead.
I think that after two elections have been proven stolen by the nazi's that installed 'bushco' as our representational 'faceman' and the 'mediamerika' says nothing it's past time to employ any means necessary[GUNS] www.lizmichael.com (http://www.lizmichael.com/) and either take back this government for ourselves or remove ALL support and 'head for the hills', as they say. Since my stepfather was a marine and i used to get thrilled by their firepower demonstations and know the weaponry they'll employ against us, and i also know that this country deserves the karma it's gonna reap one day[hopefully SOON]i'm supporting ONLY alternative 'ways and means' and somehow or another gonna escape this FUCKING REGIME! I hope that the few who's eyes are TRULY open, www.luminist.org (http://www.luminist.org/) to all scenario's of possible future occurrances are doing what my old boy scout motto said, 'BE PREPARED', and that all who support and believe in this goddamned pignation and help further it's open agenda of global domination will either get hip, or perish. So the rest of US can usher in the new paradigm of global, earth friendly, MARIJUANA SMOKING, hemp using, tribalnationstateanarchistic COMMUNITY of WOODSTOCK NATION! steve

Mary is right, there are numerous forums here to be political, be a hot head (although you do have to be careful with that)...be sexual, or share a recipe.
Please read what the Garden is about, and make sure you really want to be here.
And if you really don't ...then don't fuck it up for the rest of us....K???

There's far more than enough everyday bullshit going on out there in the so called Real world and this place can and should be a nice groovy kind a place to come in and know that you won't have to defend how you feel, and you will have a nice soft place to kick back and talk about the old times and share what you have. TEEPI, vanilla flavored SILK SOYMILK!!!!!! GREAT STUFF.heheh, this man speaks a lot of truth ;) :):)

now for super ethical eating, try the unsweetened kind. its not real vanilla in the vanilla if you didnt notice, real vanilla prices went up 600% recently for reasons unknown to me. mostly sugar, from the wonderful sugar industries who addict and unbalance our beings unknowingly and lobby and pay our government fat wads of money to oversugar us in almost everything we eat.

another one that youll find in damn near everything you eat because the government is paid to allow it, is (more often than not, genetically modified) high fructose corn syrup. from apple sauce, to ketchup, to bread, your sure to find this vibration of corruption alllll over typical grocery stores, and even in some products in health food stores, namely tofutti products and some others im sure. guess it sorda sucks watchin out for it, but i dont mind the extra hunt+sacrafice for the extra organic earthy goodness.

people who worry about missing certain foods go hand in hand with the people who worry about their lawns imo...people on budgets i can understand, but conscious consuming is a very good thing to try to turn onto. it isnt that much more if your conscious of how to shop smart with common sense either. more often than not, budget is just an excuse people use to stick with their conditioned conventional habits.

open your mind, try something new, and drink some ethical, ecological, healthier, AND tastier/morenjoyable soymilk. its in every conventional grocery store if you take 2 seconds to look, and if ya dont like it, its like 3 bucks, not too big of a loss? always start with vanilla or chocolate is my advice : ) youll be glad you did, i promise.

now if we could just turn teepi onto soysauge(lol), we'd be set....or at least get her off the conventional cattle(and pigs), theyre the hardest on the environment..thats not askin too much is it? its second only to automobiles in terms of environmental destruction...

actually we usually make our own soymilk.
Larry is borderline diabetic and we stay away from alot of sugar.
However when we go to the big city it is usually an all day trip and to ward off the hungries I usually pack something to at and we pick up a half gallon of the silk for a treat.

We also eat very little meat.
I will buy some and use a hand full here and there to season food. We don't eat beef.
The chicken we eat comes from a local who raises them,sells eggs and dressed chickens, They are free range.

I also make my own bean burgers. Just too much crap in them stores anymore so if I can grow it or make it myself all the better.

I use ALOT of applesauce...make my own if I can get good apples locally...we have got them from the Amish here.
If I do buy it I buy the unsweetened...why in the world would you ever ADD sugar to applesauce.
I use alot because when I bake I replace any oil with applesauce. The pectin is a great fat replacer.
Can't sub it for pie crust but its fine in brownies,cakes and quick breads.

How wonderful of you to be concerned with my health.
You are very sweet.

High fructose corn syrup, now that's bad news! I always avoid it if at all possible, and I try to go for unrefined sugar and sweeteners in more natural forms like honey.

Soy milk is good, it works great as a creamer for tea. Tofu's good too, and if you freeze it it takes on the consistency of meat, and you can add it to spaghetti sauce, soup, etc., or do the stir fry thing.

We also raise chickens, free range, and we produce our own organic eggs for breakfast every day. When the chickens get older, we eat them. We tried raising meat birds once that turned out to be mutants, never again. They were too scary, and unnatural. It's hard to believe these are the same chickens they sell in the supermarkets, except that ours were treated far more humanely.

Very cool Mellow Yellow! I love to see hippies turned onto the good karma friendly food that nourishes not only the Earth and it's life, but ourselves and tastebuds too. Its a shame many are so touchy and closed-minded about food, when it truly takes very little effort or sacrafice to eat better and more ethically. :(

What is the difference between a meat bird and a chicken?

I don't have much of a problem with you raising your own chickens, its the factory farms that REALLY bother me. The only problem I have with organic meat farms is that, the animals are raised for death. Sure their not fed chicken shit and pesticide filled food, and not injected with antibiotics, and they dont live in cages in buildings, but their life is still not truly respected I dont think. Their raised to get the organic label on their food, and killed when profitable often. Their not killed when its THEIR time to go, but when we say it is, and that is the problem I have with MOST of them.

Plus I just dont believe humans are SUPPOSED to consume animal products, and they mess with your spirit and energy. That also goes for a lot of processed vegan food which I eat a lot of too. If youve ever done a fast or raw veganism stints you probably know what I mean. I will admit though, I'm also guilty to baking with organic free range eggs from time to time. But afaik, eggs are simply a way of recycling and hens lay many more than necessary. Read something very interesting in the gardening forum, a foraging thread, that agriculture was the downfall of man. He stopped eating what nature intended, lost variety in his diet, and lost the vital life force that a TRUELY natural diet gave him. I have a very strong feeling there is some truth to this, especially after reading Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.

I agree, soymilk is delicious when added to tea, or just plain. I like to mix real organic maple syrup in mine sometimes for a real treat, heavenly mix...

I've heard bad things about some honey raisers, and I definatley believe bees have some sentience to them. But I'm not completley against, Daniel Quinn did it for a long time and I have a great respect for that mans spirit and anything he did. He said every bee was an individual with different personality aspects, and every hive was also a larger collective unique individual.

I know its only inevitable things are hurt so that I can survive buying things from the store... even though I try to do the best I can and shop as ethically and consciously as possible(which truly is NOT that hard if you just set out a tiny bit of good intention), I know the Earth and some of its life still takes a punch one way or another. So I just say a prayer of thanks for the sustainence they give, and try to be a worthy recipient and make my life count. Hope you all do the same : )

It's difficult to always be ethical about eating, but I do my best...

Meat birds are chickens that have been genetically manipulated over generations to produce the maximum amount of meat, and they're the ones they sell for meat in the supermarkets. They're these huge mutant things that thump the ground when they run, pretty grotesque really. Furthermore, it's obvious that the natural selection process wouldn't have selected them because they're really stupid (a tasty treat for predators), and they grow so fast many of them die from heart failure prior to maturity. We were unable to continue to raise them because they seemed miserable, and we didn't want to be responsible for that.

We treat our chickens as we do our pets, we keep them nourished and in a clean environment, and I think they live a good life. Though I do eat meat, I think of the karma thing like the Jewish tradition of eating kosher foods. If the chicken or whatever you eat lives a miserable life, has been abused, or has been butchered in an unthinkable way (like they do for the supermarkets), that bad karma is passed on to you.

Some more food for thought (no pun intended)...I've heard a theory that our teeth and digestive tract are such that humans were meant to be herbivors, I'm not sure if that's true or not, but it's interesting nonetheless...

Scarlit Rose Flowz
11-21-2005, 10:50 PM
I've heard the herbivore argument as well from an old hippy landscaper I know(who isnt even a 100% veggie), and seen it argued by Peta people countless times. Wouldnt surprise me a single bit if there were truth to it... I know from my personal experience though, that meat is not good for your spirit...

I always thought it was growth hormones that made chickens that big, and caused them to not be able to walk and sometimes die early of heart failure. Maybe you bought birds with the mones injected already and got the info confused? Or its possible both methods are practiced, either way its pretty evil and very very unfortunate.

Thats also a Buddhist thing I believe. In ram dass' book be here now, he says the vibration of your food is passed onto you, regardless of animal origin or not. If it was grown with love, that love nourishes you all the more. He says its also important to bless your food and say mantras preparing it to purify it all the more, but thats not really my trip. I feel plenty pure just abstaining from processed food and eating an organic raw vegan diet, with prayer or not. I think I read in The celestine prophecy too, that food grown with love where people spent lots of time with plants and showed them lots of attention and gratefulness, their nutrition levels rised. Im not sure how scientific it was, but im sure theres some truth to this somehow. Another good reason to grow your own organic food.

It truly isnt that hard to be an ethical eater I dont think. Or at least cut out a LARGE majority of bad vibed bad earthed things in your diet. Enjoyin your posts though man, be good.

Voided - your post reminds me of something Jerry Garcia once wrote... "Everything you know is wrong, but thats still the way it is." Man made concepts, of course, everything is... language and human drama rule our lives...Regardless of our incapability to objectively percieve truth in a truly accurate way and capture moments, we can still trust these judgments...

I dont think theres anything wrong with thinking about what is right and what is wrong...oh the irony in that statement. If more people considered the way they conducted themselves, the world would be a lot better off. People sayin fuck the system and livin without fear would probly make the world a lot better too, but isnt that deciding ultimatley somethins not right???

And doesnt growing into something bigger and better include peace and love? Just doing or saying what one feels like and is desirous of, and more than likely fuckin up, seems like the hard way of learnin things and lettin karma kick your ass eventually...Once has to put consideration and compassion into ones actions, you reap what you sow and it all comes back through interconnection, I have no doubt. See and feel it happen all the time, to the point where I just CANT deny it...

I'm all for sayin fuck the world, and I definatley share that similar mind model with people like George Carlin, Bill Maher, you, etc... but I think all these people are deeply compassionate at their core and occasionally their lucky enough to let that part of them surface...and I think ultimatley they want to lead as compassionate lives as possible because they know thats their true nature. Ever see George Carlins 40 year special? Hes actually a really kind soft person, even though hes all about trashing people and this world in his routines...

my faith in the planet in its natural state, mother nature and people who respect each others space in very intact.

I've lived in NYC, LA , DC,Norfolk and many smaller places.
Thumbed across this country twice.
Lived at Earth Peoples Park and in a car.
Lived in foster homes,reform schools and a fancy ass boarding school.
Been kidnapped.
And I've been in a mental hospital.

Worked as a dancer, a gardener, a photo processor, in restaurants,as a pharmacy tech, an advertising exec., and put lead in eyebrow pencils,plus numerous other jobs.

I've known crazy people, mean people,criminals, wonderful people,celebrities,musicians,pimps,sailors, holy people, and the ones your mother warned you about......

So after all that....the bestest place for me????.....the woods.

cut out a LARGE majority of bad vibed bad earthed things in your diet.
Now you're talkin', Scarlit, it's the karma of the food you eat that becomes one with your karma. I've also read about what you speak of regarding Buddhist rituals and eating, and while I'm with you that it's a little over the top to engage in thes rituals, I had an Eastern Medican man (accupuncturist/herbalist) tell me years ago that the ritual of eating is in itself nearly as important as the food you eat. If you're stressed and on the run like so many people in this country, your body won't assimilate it into your body in a positive way like it will if you're in a quiet meditative state while eating.

To set the record straight about our experiment raising meat chickens, it's not just growth hormones, they are actually a different breed of chicken than the egg layers, we fed them the same food we feed our egg chickens (not the medicated stuff with antibiotics and/or growth hormones the corporations feed theirs), and they grew a lot slower than they might've, but they were still awful.

I think anyone who's tried organic food (I'm sure that includes all present) knows you just feel better all around than subsisting off that processed crap they sell at the supermarket (and I'll spare you my rant about GMO's, and the horrible corporations like Monsanto that have destroyed agriculture as we know it, I'm sure you can relate).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...But, I digress...what was the topic of this thread again? Oh yeah...
I think I'm with teepi on the idea isolating myself from the main stream, living in the woods, and letting the empire crumble of it's own immense bloated weight...I can feel it happening already...and the further you are from it, the better off you are.
It really sucks the futility in attempting to affect change, it's not the same world it was in Abbie Hoffman's day, it seemed like then it was actually possible for one man to affect large-scale change through civil disobedience, not so easy now. But I haven't lost hope...
A few years ago Pfizer was gonna build a big research facility in our back yard, atop the highest point for miles no less, so any waste that might've been discharged would contaminate an immense watershed. Of course, no one in our community wanted it there, but the corporates with their big fancy houses elsewhere sure did. A friend of mine made this his personal project, worked on it full time for months on end without pay, was destitute and practically homeless for the duration as a result. But he was savvy about the law, zoning, etc., so he finally made it so difficult for these people that they just backed out. Big victory for us, but if it hadn't been for him, they would've just bulldozed it through, since the law can only be upheld if there's a watchdog there to do it...
Right on Mellow.
While I live in the woods, I do still get involved in things that provoke a passion in me.
Right now I am talking with the Public Utilities Comm of Ohio.
I am pissed off that to have electricity out here you are forced to join a rural elec co-op.
There is a fee to join.
And although our usage runs about 20.00 amonth they tack on that other 10.....for what??? I don't know.
It is a monopoly, you have to join to have elec. then they charge an extra 10.00 a month for a 'line charge'...the per killowat cost is no lower than any other public utility comp. in the state.
Also on your bill it says if you do get cut off it is 200.00 to be reconnected.
This is one of the top 3 poorest counties in Ohio.
I figure that if you are having a problem paying your bill in the first place and get cut off...how in the hell can you come up with 200.00 more?
They have the monopoly...they could charge a thousand dollars if they wanted...not being a 'public' utility but a private co-op they are beyond regulation.
Sorry for the spouting...but it just pisses me off.
All the more reason to keep saving for the wind generator...
I'm scrolling down this thread and i see gate deleted cause of ignore list. And i hate that cause i don't believe in censorship. But i guess it's like when you know one on the streets and you go outta your way to help[coyote thing]and then later you find out they were in that position cause they asked for it. And by being friendly all you did was fuck yourself.....I used to say it takes all kinds to make the world go around and then more and more years go by and i got sick of hearing of rapists, child molesters, BATF, serial killers, DEA, Jeff Dahmer homocannibals, FBI, wifebeaters, multinational corporate polluters, pres bush's, pres clinton, pres reagon, youngblackgangsters, oldwhitegangsters, misogynists, landraperdevelopers, and all the 1st world governments and their suckups and i've come to the conclusion that it does not take all kinds to make this world go around. All the above need an LE![learning experience]I own and have read a copy of 'The Turner Diaries' and at the end the survivors of the race wars were rejoicing that all that were left in the world were white people and what a great thing it was. I thought to myself....BORING!!! I LOVE my BLACK, RED, YELLOW, BROWN, OLIVE and OTHER SKINTONE SISTERS and BROTHERS! But, do we really need all the bullshit between us put there by our respective governments and by our own lack of social and communicative skills?Of the most prominent religions thruout the worldand the less prominent[Red Sisters and Brothers Legends and Myths, Zoroastrianism, Wicca, Santaria, Voodoo, on and on...]the one thing most prevalent is the Golden Rule, [b]Do Unto Others as you would have Them Do Unto You[At least among your own kind, some say].It behooves us all[LOL]to consider that we meet here on a site in hippy.com to discuss issues and just meet others of LIKE MIND for our benefit and enjoyment. Hippy.com to me would symbolize a place of peace, respect, sincerity, and maybe passion for our World and each other. WHY DO I FIND SO LITTLE OF THAT HERE!????I belong to a site called The FALFILES. It's a site devoted to lovers of the Fabric Nationale[FN], Fusile Automatique Legere[FAL]which is a battle rifle of the first order. A mankilling machine. That if used for it's intended purpose does it's job very well. You may think that falfiles would be full of mankiller type assholes but in fact you'll search far and wide for a site where it's members treat each other with as much courtesy, respect and downright comradery as they do. All around a war weapon[man determines it's usage, the rifle has no moral anything].Now why is it that here on this site you have so many that wanna give the other a hard time and look for things to harm the others words over and on the warweapon site folks get along so well? THIS IS WHY; Because an armed society is a polite society most times and because when the subject is POWER over another people tend to listen hard and choose their words well. THAT'S WHY.When the subject is a fantasy world of damn near anything goes[like here for alot]like what most here's concept of the 'hippy' world was, then folk's figure their not bound by the rules of common courtesy or sense. And that's a fuckin' shame cause i for one was[am]ready to die for the ideals of the DAYS i grew up in and i put up with countless examples of hardship for hair lenght, thought crime, rejection of stereotype[i'm no 'hippy'], rejection of my parents world, and rejection of the type of interaction i see all over these boards. So why don't more here act right? And what's the limit of our ability to straighten them out? How will they get their LE? I've discovered the 'Ignore' trick and gonna stick to it a while. Someday i'll find a site with ABSOLUTELY no censorship and everyones name and home address's will be posted for all to see and i'll join. And i'll bet people there will act 'right'. So others won't act 'wrong'.In the meantime 'black wabit' needs to know that once one is passed on, LET THEM REST. I use alot because when I bake I replace any oil with applesauce. The pectin is a great fat replacer.
Can't sub it for pie crust but its fine in brownies,cakes and quick breads.
ha! funny you should mention that, i just learned that the other day. i have always used applesause instead of oil and try to do that for a pie crust-came out tuff as hell, it took me about ten minutes to cut and piece of pie and had to rip part of it cause the knife would cut it all the way.
who is G-d?????
And some weeds SUCK!!!
They over run, stragling EVERYT^HING they come into contact with.
They are overbearing, smothering,hurtful and invasive.
Some are beautiful and useful and glorious,but as they cannot control themselves we sometimes have to limit their invasivness.
I had a house in Va. years ago and along the side of the house a plant grew..Virginia Creeper.
It is a vine that becomes a woody vine, very strong. It grew up under the shingles on the house and started busting them.
I liked the plant, beautiful vine, but I had to put it under control or it would have destroyed the house.
So weeds have their place, but unless you want them invading your space, you do have to exert a bit of control.
Go down to Tenn. and watch the Kudzu....it will overtake any and everything in its path.
I have enough space here to not worry too much about weeds, they are all over as we live in the woods. But I do keep them out of my garden or I won't have a good harvest. That keeps me from enjoying what I planted. My tomatoes will not have to compete for water and light as long as I can bend over and pluck out a weed.
HA.....yep.
Just write God when I mean all inclusiveness. I use all the letters.
It's a word.
Yes I believe we are all one.
There is a ripple effect in all we say,do and think that affects others close and far away.
Its all energy and it flows.
It is hard to convey what you say and truly mean here, there is a delay between each post unless the person a post may be directed at or one who chooses to respond when no direction is given,is here right at the time you are.
TREMENDOUS misunderstandings happen this way.
Happens all the time.
Here all I or you have are words.
So I do try to choose them carefully when I respond to someone, or voice an opinion.
I'm not into hurting,or embarrassing or needling anyone.
If someone is an ass I tryt o point it out in a gentle way so maybe they will listen. But it does and doesn't matter.
I have said things to some youngins who came here and were so harsh towards alot of us...for no reason and I talked to everyone of them. In private, and it all changed.
No one likes to be attacked (percieved or not) in 'public'.
I can argue a point and I can stand up for myself, but I try to choose my battles wisely. I do this in my home also and Larry and I have had 4 disagreements where I just had to grab him by the collar and...KISS HIM!!!
Because there is just so few things that I think trading angry words are worth.
Yes I am guilty of just 'trying to get along'.
But...fuck with my kids, my dog.my husband or my land and that crazy Cuban temper gets down right NUTTY.
Anything else...I will tell you what I think and you can take it from there.
I often try to make a point by telling a story, or an alleghy (sp).
This way I am not attacking anyone personally but maybe (hopefully) making them think.
As in the whole weed thing.
Now as far as the word 'Peace' at the end of your post......AAACCCKKK!!!!!!
Hope you were not questioning ME......
Refer back to our last PM's BROTHER!!!
Don't worry sweetie, I can go back and forth with you, without it meaning I would turn my back on you...
I love everyone here and the people that have known me for over 2 years know what I mean by this.It means exactly what it means.
I am down with Peace too as long as no one steps on my toes~
My days of sharing and opening the house to everyone is over~
I got nothing from it in the end I ended up broke while
As I read all of your words~I get inspiration,hope and strength~
I am happy that we have our treasured Shameless Heifer with us~
I am happy that you are happy my special sister~
You have much to say that makes sense~
Teepie~about GOD~Well,as I get older and since I had my outta body expierence in 1990,I tend to believe that there is another relm after we die~
Is GOD there waiting for us,I don't know~
Are we all gonna have to be judged for the life we led down here before we ask for forgiveness so that we can live in the Kingdom of Heaven,I don't know that answer~
I guess we will just have to die first?
Right on sister.
Our path opens to us and its up to us to follow it, in the way we will.
I too have had some miracles in my life that opened my eyes to PLENTY.
By PLENTY I mean what I needed to get through.
There have been dark days...but always a light. Sometimes just a glimmer, but its never not been there. Just up to me to gas it up.
You did mention your husband to me and we are very blessed to have a partner who is truly WITH us.
GOD to me is all inclusive. No matter what you believe there IS something. Its all around us,through us, and with us.
Maybe not some big ol Neptune looking granpappy on a big throne, not some hell fire brimstone vengeful spirit who spites.
But maybe just us. Keeping the spirit alive and flowing.
Of course we don't know for sure what all is going on...not supposed to I think...thats where the faith comes in.
Faith that life is full of lessons and we have the opportunity to learn and become more spiritual from those lessons.
We have been given the power of forgiveness...and it is powerful. I forgave something horrible in my life and that light got alot brighter.
I just think we do know whats basically right and wrong and the golden rule is the golden rule.
If we let love guide us and hold each other and all creatures in reverence then a good foundation for a good life is there.
OH Mary,
I was saddened to hear of the family being under the weather.
But I know that you know what to do.
Glad to hear the cloud is lifting.
How many gallons of chicken soup did you go though???
As far as the vibe here.....whenever new people show up, they just need to find their groove.
Usually they find it and we all respect it and appreciate what they have to offer.
When someone shows up and can't get in the groove they peter away and maybe think about what they encountered here and maybe come back at a later time.
Very few can't be comfortable here.
I think we are a pretty accepting bunch....
shameless_heifer
12-03-2005, 12:01 PM
I don't know Steve, you get what you give. You seem to get banned from a lot of places. It's like the guy who was married and divorced 7 times. He kept blaming the woman he married for the problem, but if he couldn't have happiness in any of his 7 brides, then I have to ask who is the one not gettng along, the 7 brides or the one man.
I think we all have to look within to find our true self. The one we can't hide or cover up. The one we face in the mirror each day. To have peace inside your own soul and be safe with your self. When we look at the faults of others it's just us seeing a part of us in others that we don't like about ourselves.
Steve you act like you should be free to say and do what you please no matter who's toes you step on and come out saying 'My that felt good'. But when someone steps on your toes, you have a coniption fit. I don't believe that the 1st amendment of freedom of speach was to be used to belittle or degrade others with or to spew out all over everyone. It's like farting in an elevator, you may feel better, but you inflicted your leavings for every one else to choke and gag on. Some of the ones that are here have given a thousands lives for peace and are still giving.
There may be posers, but maybe they are just trying to find a place to fit in and be accepted. Arent we all looking for that, aren't you looking for that also.
To me someone who is always fucked up on drugs or alcohol is still searching for themselves and can find no happiness within and blame the world for their own blindness and refusal to see.
Who's problem is it when someone can't get along with the tribe they live with. Is it the whole tribes shortcomings or the shortcomings of the one. Your demands are many, your offerings are few. Dig yourself dude, before you concider others. You seem awfull proud for telling "them" all what you think about them, did you wait and listen to what they may think about you.
I would like to think Abby would have liked a lot of ones in the forums
It's not the language that bothers me Steve dear, unless it is shaped as an arrow and flung at someone to harm.
No fun am I, well if I saw some fun, I would join in merrily. I don't think being insullting is much fun tho'. You have even asked yourself if you go too far, so you know your being less then kind to some. That's not free speach, that's slanting it to fit your own agenda.
I have a sence of humor, but not at others expence. I can even laugh at myself as long as it is all in fun and doesn't make me feel conspiquis.
I am the Mod here and I have to think of everyones feelings and not just go along with what my friends say, just because they are my friends. I have to be fair to everyone. I'm trying to be fair with you too.
I think I have been doing a fair job of keeping the Garden clean. I am only human ya know.
Now to address the launguage thing. I cuss like a sailor at times, but I don't talk about private areas of my life, like my sexual habits or preferences. I don't think this is the place for it or anybodies biz. I don't think it would be interesting to anyone but me and my partner.
In my regular caps there are about 285mg per cap.
About 1/3 of a gram.
so 4 caps would be about 1 and 1/3 gram.
Well now...
As far as being a damper because in a moment of frivolity ...reality rears its swollen head....hey, the world is what it is,in any given moment there are all kinds of injustices,disease,extinctions,pain,unfairnesses,a nd immense general crappola goings on.
I too am an extremly sensitive person...I go on overload very easily.
I am in the woods because of it.
If I were to let myself become wrapped around all that is going on I would spend every moment of the day crying...and ceasessly banging my head aginst the wall.
You cannot save this whole world.
You have to live your life, and help where and when you can,but if you lose yourself in this mire of destruction then what do you have left???
This world needs a counter balance, for all the shit...there has to be more smiles on the other side of the scale. There has to be an understanding that the positive stuff needs to outweigh the negative.
Thats the reason this planet is still here.
There are people who do whatthey can. Some can heal, some can lobby, some can travel and spread some good information, some can fix a leak in a neighbors roof...all can hold a hand and give a hug.
You find your niche and you get passionate in it and you blossom and you spread your vibe.
Whatever that niche is.
I have ptsd so I live out here, I am too sensitive to be around alot of people and have some problems with strangers, so I have a few things I do here to keep my hand in the mix. I extend a helping hand where I can and do a few things politically about a few causes I am passionate about.
So when it is all overwhelming you, ask yourself..."where can I be most useful today,what can I do about this right now" and use what you have to help make a difference.
We can't all be stars, but we can all twinkle....
teepi
12-05-2005, 12:31 AM
whoo hoo...I ramble also.
I rant too.
Thats just it, the world and all its design are going to play out. You fit where you fit.
We do not know where any little thing we do goes.
There is a gigantous ripple effect.
I had someone touch my soul when I was 13.
Their words got me through the darkest times, almost 3 decades later when I spoke witht them again, they were shocked that they had such a profound effect upon my life. It amazed them that conversations we had when I was so young stayed with me, and that their words were words of hope to me.
We do not know how our words and actions will ripple outward, any gesture of kindness or meaness can change the course of someone's day...or life.
And why are you asking me if you're rambling???huh huh???
Like I said, this place is the most entertainment I have on alot of days.
SO....RAMBLE ON!!!
teepi, you can't even know how your post just now touched me (not the lutefisk post though, the one before it :) ). I just really needed to hear it, long story....family crap....don't really want to open that can of worms, but what you said is so very true, and thanks. I sometimes think we are all tied here in some cosmic bond, not just HERE, but here and universally, and I'm rambling, but hey, hugs to you, sister. :D
mimosa
12-05-2005, 12:43 AM
lol Lutefisk is what the old school scandinavian types make up here around the holidays...it is nasty stuff but some people like it. It is fish cured with lye or some such .... but cornbread and cheese grits, mmmm. and you all with the homemade stout and wine, that sounds great too. how do you/Larry make oatmeal stout? I love that kind of beer. Never thought about brewing it.
teepi
12-05-2005, 01:10 AM
Hugs to you too sista!!
When I lived down south we ate hominy...it is corn soaked in a lye bath.
There is also hominy grits.
I can eat grits...IF there are plenty of over easy eggs around to mask them and cheese is a blessing if I must eat grits.
I lived in a foster home once and the mother would make a huge pot of grits...I could not eat them.
So of course I got no money for lunch..
At dinner I would sit down to my cold pancake of grits...she would put them in the fridge all day and they would congeal into a big whote pancake. No dinner for me...
Now cornbread is another story...I adore cornbread. I like mine a little sweet. I melt butter in the cast iron skillet then pour in the batter and bake. It gets real crisp around the edges...mmmm
I also like to make baked chili with cornbread dumplings.
Oatmeal stout...do you brew??
If you have never brewed there are numerous sites explaining how.
We crack our own grain and roast scottish oats.
I want to get into roasting our own grain, different roasting times give you different flavors.
Roasting the oats frist give them a bit of sweetness also.
We have 2 glass carboys we bought last year but you can use a bucket foodgrade, with a lid that you can get at a wine a nd beer supply. We have a bucket thats 7 gallons we use for our wine.
And you need airlocks and a few other things. If you do brew let me know and I will send you our 3/11 stout recipe.
I do believe we are sent into each others lives.
Sometimes for a second, sometimes forever.
Sometimes to teach a lesson, sometimes to learn, sometimes to just give or get a smile.
mimosa
thanks teepi, I will check in with you if I ever get a chance to brew. we have some places near here that will help you brew beer but haven't checked them out.
I love grits if they aren't plain. Garlic and cheese and butter helps them out immensely. but plain, they get a very bad reputation that way. :)
Plain grits? Forget it. 4 eggs, runny yolk, cheese[enough to color]and mush tha grits in, mmmmmm.
Now you're talkin', reminds me of the days I used to live in the South, I gotta remember to pick up some grits next time I hit the store. I dunno why it's been so long since I had grits, prolly cause I hadn't thought of it.
I also have the carboy and equipment for brewin', would really like to get back into it, only my "poison" would be India Pale Ale, the only bummer is it's almost as expensive to make (with all the ingredients, syrup, etc.) as it would be to buy, though I hear if you make your own mash, it brings the cost down considerably.
I think we got makings of a perfect breakfast http://www.hipforums.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif
Hi Mellow...
The last brew we made we experimented and used all barley. Cracked it ourselves. We bought it already roasted. Used crystal,black patent and some chocolate.
No powdered or syrup.
We get the barley for 1.99 a lb. but that is already roasted.
We want to get the roasting times down and do that ourselves with raw barley.
Corn sugar costs a bit but raw sugar gives an inferior product.
We made 5 gallons of stout for about 13.00. This was not oatmeal.
We like the Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout to buy but its 8.00 a 4-pack. So we don't buy it anymore.
The Sam Adams Cream Stout tastes alot like the beer we make.
Brew magazine is online and there are some great recipes.
I like the India pale ale also...when I worked in the drug store one of our customers was a member of a homebrew club and brought me some he had brewed...it was terrific.
We made 15 gallons of wine this past summer.
10 apple 5 grape.
I can't believe how smooth it has turned out. I did put back 2 gal apple and 1 gal of the grape to open next summer but the rest is being consumed....me wait a year???? haha
Wow Teepi, that's impressive, sounds like y'all have mastered the art of brewing, I've always understood that last step (mashing) to be the one that separates the men from the boys so to speak. 5 gallons, 13 bucks, that sure makes it worthwhile! Plus the big bonus is you know what went into what you're drinking, and you know it's fresh. Yet another skill I need to learn so I can pack it in, move out to some remote wooded area, and say good-bye to "civilization."
I'm also a big fan of Samuel Smith products, but I don't get it often, just for a treat now and again.
WE have Muscodines here, (grapes) and that makes for a great wine, add a little yeast and corn sugar and strain every few days and your set to go in two weeks, we never lasted a yr either, heh heh.. I also grow Cncord and green seedless grapes for wines, jellies and jams. Concord is *medicinal* of course :-)) and has a rich flavor. We'll all have to get together one day and have a wine fest..each bringing our own creations to share. Ahhh.. I can feel the love.
Oh Mary,that is perfect for us.
I will try it in a few days.
Larry has to have a bit of flour in his cornbread to make it less grainy.
The applesauce sounds like a great touch also.
Carol, thank you for appreciating fine art...lol.
I really do bask in the compliments thank you so much for the kind words.
Mellow, oh yeah baby!!!
I am a big proponent of learning every skill you can, getting rid of debt and telling "the man" to get screwed.
We bought our 8.5 acres after saving for just 2.5 years.
We put down a good down payment and pay 167.00 a month for it on land contract. It would have been better to just pay for it outright but we used part of the money to build our house.
It is about 1100 sq. feet now and we spent about 4,000 dollars building it. We used ALOT of salvaged materials and paid about 50 cents to 3.00 a window. And about 10 bucks per door. We have three doors that go to the outside and Larry built one with poplar on both sides and a sheet of foam in the middle.
The other 2 are metal with foam insulation.
We have a friend who drives a refuse truck that drops off and picks up those big construction dumpsters. He called us from Dayton and told us of a company that was building a modular addition onto a school and they had ordered too much fiberglass insulation and they had thrown the huge R19 rolls in the dumpsters. Us and some friends with a pickup went up and loaded it all up, the foreman on the job told us to come back for 1/2" drywall the next day.
They also had 2x4's.
I totalled it all up and it came to over 1300 dollars retail...for free!!
We prayed on a woodstove and met a neighbor up our road and mentioned we were looking for one and he showed us one in his garage...70 dollars. It is beautiful..in more ways than one.
We have never had to buy wood. People keep coming by and giving it to us, and there are portable sawmills that they log with all over, we just go and they give us the slab wood.
The lumber for our house..all oak and poplar was bought for 120.00 for 1,000 board feet..rough cut. We had to haul it ourselves but well worth it.
We've bought 5 of those bundles.
We dug a 25ft well ourselves with a hand auger, it went dry this summer...drought here, but there is a local spring with really good water.
We catch rainwater also....
I could go on but this is boring for those not into it.
My best advice if you want to move to the woods, country, or not, but want to homestead as much as you can in the city.....get OUT of debt, don't buy crap you don't need(but remember,you NEED art), subscribe to backwoods home, back home, and countryside journal....or check your library. We have the Old Mother Earths, Larry has been dragging around for over 30 years so we had a good start.
Learn how to grow your food, about solar,wind and water power, start stock piling salvaged building materials. Get a good chain saw.
We moved into a 3 room apt. for 300 a month, both worked full time jobs (he got laid off in the winter months) My pay paid for what we needed, his check went into savings, we bought a pickup, library was our entertainment, and saved 18,000 in 2 and a half years.
So it can be done....and I will gladly share what I know if anyone needs it.
I'm a creature of instant gradifacation.. I will borrow against money I don't have.. My man on the otherhand holds money in an iron claw and never lets me near it.. heh heh, hey thats not funny!! true but not funny ;p. I never have any money so when I do get lucky and some comes my way, I spend it as fast as I get it. I don't blow it on crap tho, I spend it on my grand kids or someone in more need then I.
Here lately there has been no money due to the fricken high cost of car fucking repair, ruined my kids Christmas and stupid job service sent me on a job they knew would be impossible for me to do and almost wrecked my self trying to make Christmas money, of course the loan company would love for me to come in and refinance the loan I got for last Christmas and am still paying off at 16% intrest compounded daily.. whoa.. I even got so desperate as to ask hubby if I could refinance.. I can't type his responce in mixed company.. yikes. HA, oh Mary...at least the DH has an Iron Claw...hahaha
I can't stand to owe money, It keeps me up at night now if I get behind on anything, and lately we have been behind on just the daily stuff.
But I am really about whittling costs down so that we can sock anything away that we can.
Out here jobs are few and far between and I don't like working for anyone else.
So the more I can cut back, the more I don't HAVE to work.
I really enjoy being able to stay home and paint and enjoy the land and my husband.
Although I think I will have to work one day a week...until his social security kicks in.
He cannot work now, can't pass the physical for his cdl and there really aren't any jobs out here for a 60 year old man.
So we are just able to screech by.
Working one day a week will take care of the land taxes and truck insurance.
If we had been in debt when he could not go back to work, they could have put a lean on our land.
Also if you move to the country and carry debt with you, you will have to keep working.
If you do it and have to keep working you need to make sure that you can commute to town for a job.
Out here the closest town is very small, the next largest is a 55 mile round trip.
Our roads are not plowed and as our road cuts through the state forrest one end of it is closed down when its icy.
I cut the store bought gift thing out when my son Donovan became aware of the whole commercilism deal when he was 10. He thought it would be a good idea to not buy store bought items for Christmas and load up on the birthdays....haha
And thats what we did.
So both kids learned to sew,they made cookies and made coupons for gifts of themselves.
Thats what we still do.
This year they are getting lap quilts, cookies and paintings.
I told Donnie he gave us all a great gift that year.....burden relief.
Thanks gate and Carol...
I just really would love for people to find a way to live like they want.
And to wake up and see that consummerism, and the throw away attitude is hurting society so much.
We are doing the generations after us a disservice by not teaching them the basic skills we need to survive.
There seems to be far more takers than givers, and when its so out of balance...things begin to topple.
When you believe that having the latest model car is a great thing...and they have made them consistantly more difficult for the average person to do the simplest repairs on...is that truly advancing??
Bigger, brighter and more expensive is not always best.
Thats just one example...I could go on.
Don't even get me started on the lies behind the food they crank out....
Or the education system...
Or the bullshit with the war.....oil....race...homeland security....etc.
Things are changing, and I for one truly believe we need to get back to depending on ourselves for alot of things we grew up taking for granted.
I really hope that people will wise up and realize that there are those out there coming up with more and more ways to get your money.....from our goverment on down.
I gotta go with Gate on applauding the resourcefullness of recycling building materials, I did construction for a while, and I was also amazed at all the crap they throw away, and this is the stuff that goes into our land fills?
It is a throw away society, and what gets me is the packaging which is often as bulky or more so than the product that goes into it, it's obscene!
It's not about fixing things any more, it's about throwing them away and buying new because it's more "cost effective." I think we should adopt a system that's more like the Europeans, when you buy a product you pay a tax to cover the cost of recycling and/or disposal of that product up front, might make us a little more environmentally conscious as a society.
Seems like a plot to make us fat, dumb, and happy...and dependent. If we can't fix things ourselves, we're forced to buy into the system, yet another way to control the masses...but we needn't go there if we can learn to do it all ourselves...
Hi Carol,
This is so true of the level women are put on. Not only did the women have to do all the work, but had to put up with clap, crabs and everyother thing their ole, mens were out doing.
Later the majority split the sheets and trhe women had to support the offspring by themselves or go on the system. I have two children from that era. Both diffrent fathers. I was married to them and recived no childsupport from either of them. We did without plenty but we always had love and each other. Nothing in life could have been harder to provide, and keep bright eyes shining.
But we live and learn, we choose our paths and draw what we may
HA! That may be one thing that's possibly improved over the years, gender rolls, though I s'pose it depends where you are and who you're with.
My lady is very independent and strong, and I wouldn't have it any other way. We had something delivered a while back, and the two delivery guys where whining 'cause they didn't wanna carry whatever it was around to the back of the house where we wanted it, so she said to the guy, "that's ok, I'll do it myself, I'm used to doing the work of two men." She told me the guys were stunned, and one of 'em got a look on his face like she'd kicked him in the groin...
We of the 60's broke the ground, but there are a lot of rows that need to be hoed yet
Shameless, I think I mentioned early on that the two of you seemed to share some common ground.
I saw a great sign a guy was carrying at the Memorial Day Parade in the progressive community near where I live:
"IT TAKES A BIG MAN TO BE A FEMINIST"
I'm all over that idea, but I've had to work hard to change the misogynist ways that have been programmed into me as a man in this society. I'm not quite there yet, but thanks to my infinitely patient partner, I'm making progress...
...And honestly I don't why that woman keeps me around anyhow, it's prolly 'cause she likes my power tools and she thinks I'm purdy...
We are in the tailend of an ice storm, we've been froze in for two days. The icicles are fantastic as the sun shines on them and the rainbows of balsting cyrstle whites kilidascopes with brilliant facets of fire and ice frozen in time.
I love the snow too with it's majestic virginity of sparkling white, blanketing the earth with a comfort of Peace and Tranquility. A time for reflection and good cheer, bringing brotherhood and unity in warm association. Cuddling by the fire gives a feeling of belonging and a closeness to ones inner heart. ( and the hard cider in your coaco don't hurt either ;)
Teepi I know your place look gorgouse all indraped in snow, I bet every little sound echos as it meets the fridige air. Are we not blessed to live in such splendor, and have eyes and ears and our cold red noses. Blessed be my friends
Carol, Having kids home from school for more then one day and not being able to send them outside is like being pecked by hens allday.. We built on a room at the back of the house for just such occations.. I bought all kinds of musical stuff, like a karioke machine, guitars, keyboards, maracas, haromicas, and sheet music. I then went to the 'free store' and got dressup clothes for them to wear..it keeps them occupied in a creaive way and I don't have to hear t till it's finished..lol
Love ya
