Baltimore, MD: The administration of synthetic cannabinoids promotes the proliferation of newborn neurons (nerve cells) in the rat brain and likely accounts for the drug's anti-anxiety and mood elevating effects, according to preclinical trial data published today in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Investigators found that the administration of synthetic cannabinoids increased neurogenesis in the rat hippocampus and significantly reduced measures of anxiety and depression-like behavior. Neurogenesis (the birth of neuronal cells) is thought to enable organisms to adapt to their environment and influence their learning and memory throughout life.
"Cannabinoids appear to be the only illicit drug whose capacity to produce increased hippocampal newborn neurons is positively correlated with its anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects," authors concluded.
Alcohol consumption has also been associated with a decrease in neurogenesis in adults.
"These findings add to the growing body of scientific evidence indicating that cannabis is non-toxic and may hold significant neurological benefits, including the treatment of certain neurologic diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease," NORML Senior Policy Analyst Paul Armentano said.
Previous research has shown cannabinoids to be neuroprotective (javascript:ol('index.cfm?Group_ID%3d6458');) in animals against brain damage caused by alcohol (javascript:ol('index.cfm?Group_ID%3d6538');) and/or stroke (javascript:ol('index.cfm?Group_ID%3d3853');).

THAT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE, seriously. We hear about how pot kills brain cells. I have heard from numerous medical professionals that it does kill brain cells, BUT really isn't a bad thing because we have like trillions of them. But these medical professionals tell me though that it is NOT thc that kills brain cells, but some other chemical(s) in the cannabis plant that i can't remember. Synthetic cannabinoids is basically thc without any harmful carcinogens.
But don't get the wrong idea here. One can still consume thc without causing brain cell loss, IMO, such as eating it or vaporizing it.

^Well its not completely true that the pot that we smoke or eat has the same effect.
The team injected laboratory rats with a synthetic substance called HU-210, which is similar, but 100 times as potent as THC. They found that the rats treated regularly with a high dose of HU-210 - -- twice a day for 10 days -- showed growth of neurons in the hippocampus. The researchers don't know if pot, which isn't as pure as the lab-produced version, would have the same effect.

HU-210 is the compound used in the study that this thread is referring to. HU-210 is similiar to THC and is much more potent. There are many questions remaining; example, there is a study that was conducted in the U.S. that indicates that THC may not have the same effect as that that the HU-210 study indicates, ie; neurogenesis; additional studies must be conducted in order to resolve this particular question. This said, it looks like HU-210 may offer some interesting benefits.

Hmm as I remember, the hippocampus is what helps create new memories as well...

NORML Daily News: SCIENCE: STUDY SHOWS MARIJUANA INCREASES BRAIN CELL GROWTH, by Juanita King (Source: PEAK). This is basically the same information (posted recently on: www.rense.com (http://www.rense.com/), which was taken from: www.mapinc.org (http://www.mapinc.org/)/massive drug news website, which was taken from a NORML website). The website link is here: www.mapinc.org/norml/v05/h1728/a04.htm?134 (http://www.mapinc.org/norml/v05/h1728/a04.htm?134) .
Another unknown thing about marijuana (which the contolled media won't tell you) is that it helps interfere with mind control techniques (MK-ULTRA, Project "Monarch"). LSD, however, IS sometimes used for mind control. The CIA is responsible for turning America on. Ken Kesey got turned on as a CIA LSD test subject. His experience in the hospital, inspired him to write: "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". He wasn't CIA, but went on to form "The Merry Pranksters", drove around in his psychedelic bus "FURTHER" and set up "ACID TESTS" (www.intrepidtrips.com (http://www.intrepidtrips.com/)). Initially, Timothy Leary (www.leary.com (http://www.leary.com)) got his LSD from CIA sources, but not later. He wasn't CIA, either. Check out the book: ACID DREAMS, by Martin A. Lee & Bruce Schlain, GROVE PRESS, NEW YORK. Ken Kesey and Timothy Leary are no longer with us, but they died old men, not prematurely. Both were huge crusaders for LSD in the 60's/70's.
"Under dreaming spice, to Itchycoo Park that's where I've been, What did you do there? I got high . . . it's all too beautiful, I feel inclined to blow my mind..." Itchycoo Park by THE SMALL FACES (60's psychedelic group)
I wonder what "dreaming spice" is? Latin Lettuce? Wacky Tobacy?
Peace and mind/spirit expansion . . .
So does that mean weed makes you smart? Here's another interesting article but it's a few months old:

RE: So does that mean weed makes you smart?
NO
It means a synthetic chemical of a certain type works wonders.
Cholesterol is chemically a "steroid" but eating egg yolks won't bulk you up with muscle....
IronGoth do you even smoke weed?
