So who is writing what?

A lot of people go on about writing, but never finish anything. I have an ebook (fantasy) being released by Torquere press, and now I am writing a romance erotica novella (almost finished and the manuscript has been requested by another e-publisher).

Who else is seriously getting on with writing for an audience other than their mother? What genres, what success so far?

Novels are a hard slog. After finally finishing mine I am sticking with shorter work for a while. p.s. avatar snap! I win.

There is a lot of demand. I think I like short work as I can write more of it and send more out. Then if 10 stories get rejected but one gets published I am still very happy. Novels put all your eggs in one proverbial basket and I find that harder to deal with when they get turned down (fragile ego and all that). if I was writing full time I might focus on novels but at the moment it takes me almost a year to write one.


A nice market for all things pagan is the e-zine Gaea's cauldron, its a (low) paying market and the editor is really nice. They are a bit snowed under and slow to repond at the moment but I know they are interested in all sorts of things, essays, reviews, stories, poems etc.

My book -- or rather e-book -- is a metaphysical treatise, but it includes a number of narratives as well. Called The Vanilla World View, it's intended for a pagan/new age-oriented audience.

I admire those who write novels....they are fiendishly draining, and take forever to do well.

I am one of those who starts many writings..and then.. perhaps just some reach an end... :-P


it is because I am going through a very "changing period" of my life.. since a couple of years.. and my passion can fluctuate easily... and also I wanna always reach a kind of "sublime".. so after a while I just decide to change topic.. or sticking on the same but from a new beginning..

actually I have finished and published something.. but it is academic, not narrative... a project on questioning the epistemological view of contemporary science when it is faced to new theories in quantum physics.. which involve a big amount of metaphysics... the need to go beyond the duality logic of truth or false and the principle of tertium non datur... it is a kind of spiritualized claim within the realm of science.. in order to achieve an holistic understanding of reality...

ah.. and another essay "tierra y libertad".. on the spanish colonialistic influence in mexico.. and then about the Zapatist cause... this was for a European writing contest...

for another contest I wrote also an open letter dedicated to "the umanity".. a desperate scream to face the world to its mistakes and to the danger of a probable global collapse...

basically this is what I have published until now...

all the rest.. still in my notebooks in my room... :-P

Recently wrote a short one-act play (an adaptation fo a locally published book titled "Cows Are Freaky When They Look At You" - about hippies in Kansas during the '60's) which is the first in what will hopefully be an entire cycle of short plays based upon the same book - the other plays to be collaboratively written with other members of a theatre company I work with.

Just finished a full length play called "And Much of Madness," which has a lot to do with Edgar Allen Poe's work (some of his material is adapted, but also alot of original material) - this was a collaborative play (five authors, not including Poe, and a little Shakespeare).

Working on a Screenplay adaptation (I do a lot of adapting :) ) of a Stanislaw Lev story, which will hopefully become an animated short feature. Also a collaboration with a composer friend of mine, who is doing sound and music.

Other than that, some poems and such. Whatever come to my head (all that stuff is original). When I come up against a block in one project, I just start working on another.

A young woman I knew named Rose told me, when she still had feelings, that she wished things could stop just how they were, she was happy then, she was in love. The time when I should wish things had stopped for me is perhaps long gone. I am not sure that I am so virtuous that I would have chosen to live for others, had the choice been mine. I don’t regret my life to this point. To know what I’ve done wrong I’d have to imagine how I could have done it all better, but the truth is what everyone sees in me, as great courage is merely a terrible fear of doing nothing.

i'm writing a novel that should be about as long as War and Peace, that's all about these people that talk on the internet about what they're writing. Most of them are writing sci-fi crap or porno "novellas", and will never get anywhere. It's really a book about denial and delusion. Faber&Faber have agreed to publish it in 2056, as it'll be finisheda year or two before that. The main characters are loser writers that think they're good because they write loads and send loads out, eventhough they don't have anything to say and are worth about as much as used tampons.

In the past, I was regularly writing in my journal with the intention having my thoughts and experiences published. Soon, I plan on resuming my journal writing, but I doubt I'll want to have any recent of my recent journal work published. But I do enjoy writing in my journal.

I'm trying to improve my poetry, and am therefore reading more than writing. I'm experimenting with styles and language and so far it's been disastrous. While I don't want to equate success with publication, I'm still interested in seeing if I can write "marketable" pieces. Also have a few character studies, dialogues, synopses etc written for a couple of longer term prose projects but they're very much on the backburner at the mo.

So really I'm not writing much! And I should be! *slaps self hard for being lazy*

I write lots and sell not so much. My most successful genre for published sales is in poltical & socio-cultural commentary. I make a few fair weather friends with it and, shortly, I get to dangle and twist in the wind...all by my lonely-O. It may be my own fault, I wot not(!). I am told by those who are older than I, by many far wiser than I..."One ought not call one's publisher a 'coward and a collaborator.'"
But I did and he is!
I also do arts stuff: entertainment as well as the "real" arts. I have sojourned with the great and the near-great, none of whom so much as recollects my name...
I eschewed the almighty $coin for far too long, until it was brought home to me that my worth/respect in the eyes of those who get "good" ink was a measurable worth and that worth is monetary.

I am a New Zealander living in Scotland. I recently submitted a non-fiction book proposal which if successful and funded would allow me to become a full time writer (win) and return to NZ (win/win!). I am trying not to get my hopes too high.

Currently I am more of a dabbler...

I have had some luck in the occult/pagan non-fiction and erotica areas. One because it capitalises on what I know, one because there is high demand (I'll let you figure out which is which)

Last year, I wrote a short story specifically to submit for publication in a feminist analogy of short stories and essay's. Titled "The Women's Union", it was based on the idea that people all over the world one day starting blabbling their salaries to everyone after this one woman started the idea....

I thought it was great premise and a great story, but, the publishers didn't like it enough to publish it.

I was crushed.

My latest endeavor is also of the feminist vein, "The Knowing", a novel I am knee-deep in, appears in this forum (part of it's first chapter).

Right now I'm working on two things. One is my hopeful first novel and the other is kinda a Movie/TV series I'm working on. The book is a mans jorney after death (hard to explain) and the other is kinda a FarScape/Cowboy BeBop inspired thing. Setting is in the future. Earth has made contact with other forms of life much more advanced then our own. To prevent hostile takeover they developed the rift gate. People can leave but cant come home. Well the story centers on a mercanary party, one of the characters being human, an ex earth prisoner escapee. Other species include the Goridians, who look like humans but can form weapons out of their body parts. Theres also the Blormeth who are a race of deadly assassins. And what space story would be complete without a race of sex slaves. Its Perverts Law.

A children's novel for adults...it sounds a little strange but it's the best way to describe it. I still don't know what is in the big house though...hummm
