“The Outsider”
Off beyond in some distant mountain valley,
Off a stretch of Route 66 long forgotten to all but the historian.
Lies a town that is populated like no other yet seen.
Such curious people hold all the jobs in town.
Cash runs the city jail; a small shack panted black, even though he shot a man in Reno.
He seems to have a liking for those who are prisoners cause the times.
Barrett keeps control of the loony bin; they all seem to like him there.
I’m told he took the job to be kept from being committed himself.
Morrison runs a bookshop, though nothing of his own sits on his shelves, yet.
Cooper is the principal of the high school.
Chicken has been served quite often for lunch since he took the reins.
He has a special way to prepare it, a group of greasy teenagers told me.
Jagger runs a chain restaurant, and paints for the fun on Saturday.
He mostly paints it all black; the jail is a terrific masterpiece of his.
He and his partner did the American dream though I should add,
Fired their own boss since he had become a hindrance to them.
Joplin got a brewery on the south side of town,
Where she makes what comforts the troubled soul and the poor in winter.
Lennon runs a carousel at the park on the weekends.
Tickets to ride are free to anyone who can find him a glass onion.
He has a partner, but the last anyone heard, that guy was on the run.
Valo has a sex shop up in the red light district.
What? Didn’t think there’d be a sex shop here.
Well, I was asked to mention that his shop is the red light district.
Springsteen runs some kind of farm operation down by the river,
He’s the local blue-collar hero for the average town dweller,
Even if many a president has gone since his collar was blue.
A lot of acres on his land were flooded a few years back, about half his land at its most.
The levee broke, people feared yet another farm in America would be lost.
Plant Construction company saved the day though,
They predicted a levee break and tamed the river quickly back to a normal flow.
No one here is a stranger, and everyone is always whistling a tune.
I’m going to miss this place, but I must be taking my leave soon.
The church next to city hall currently rings at six bells.
Hendrix is the name of the minister; his house next to chapel is red.
He was a big supporter of the mayor in the last election.
The mayor, why Dylan of course, no one can even touch him, won his past 15 elections.
Myself? Well I’m the outsider, just passing through on my own journey,
Waiting for the day I can enter the town on my own right.
