View Full Version : Rainbow help for Katrina-displaced folks

I've watched enough of the hurricane news on the boob tube to seriously believe that as many family as possible with busses, kitchens, trucks, medical supplies, etc., should head for New Orleans and surrounding devistated areas to help. We know as much about surviving and feeding masses of people as anyone. Donations of food etc. would be quite easy to come by right now, enroute, because so many people are looking for ways to help. The refugees could definately use our love and experience right now. Where better to put our energies? It makes more sense than hanging out in the woods somewhere, partying. And with so many people angry at the government now, for not doing enough to help, it would be a great time for Rainbow to lend a hand and a great big F--- YOU to the government. If I had the means, I'd already be on the way. Lets mobilize!!!

I wouldn't want to go into New Orleans at all right now. Some of the people are SHOOTING at rescuers trying to help them. It's getting out of control there.

i think there are man yof us that would love to do that,,, although for us it is impossible... we are however going to open up the land here n offer what ever we have to who ever we can. we have the fifth wheel for a family n possibly an extra room n we always have tent space which aint the greatest but atleast we have phone, net, water, n food etc.... and today alone i have heard so many say they would also like to do the same but cant find anythign in that direction anywhere, tonite i called the red cross for our area n asked how to host folks and to please find a way to get something running for folks to be able to list them selves .... i tried talking the boss man into a truck n n taking donations n we take it down ,,, paid of course ;) since we cant afford to take time off but would love to go n help :P... but lets not forget that this is not going away anytime soon..... this is just in the beginning stages n to begin to clean up alone will literally take months if not years n the whole rebuilding process will take a damned long time,,, i just hope that folks dont tire of all of it way too soon n fizzle out n say fukkem cuz we all know deep down somewhere that that just wouldnt be fawkin rite... even in a few weeks when people think it should be well on its way to recovery,,, it just aint gonna be,,, it is still gonna be in its infancy.... so even if we cant all go n help now or take folks in now,,,,, remember it is still gunna be there in a few weeks, months .....

Wow this idea rocks...I wish I could go down with a group of yall and help. I'll be sending some good positive vibes your way, though, if a team of yall gather up to go down. :) Well, I'm sending those vibes towards the rescuers, volunteers, etc anyway...that are down there already. There was just a big story on the news!

There's a brother on AGR asking folks to set up a Emergency Rainbow Gathering in a Mississippi National Forest (HHB-if you could copy the AGR thread or something-it'd be great) This is definately a good idea-maybe mini-gatherings near all the hardest hit areas is what we here were thinking. maybe the folks who can't get away to help could donate supplies & food to help keep these gatherings going as long as they are needed. It's an idea and maybe if we all spread it as fast & far as we can; maybe we can show folks what Love & Rainbow is all about.

Wow! My family & I are from Biloxi Mississippi, were safe in Austin Texas now . We were out today looking for a new home , trying to get a new bank account set up so that my husband would have somewhere to recieve his checks etc... Just trying to get our lives in order , somehow .Everywhere we went & everyone we met tried to help in some way or another. I found myself in tears many times because of the love coming our way from complete strangers . Its Amazing !!! We're going through alot right now & it can be very overwhelming at times , but I feel so Lucky ,Everyone in our family is safe , we've all lost alot , but we have oneanother & thats what really matters.I just wanted to say a HUGE THANK YOU for thinking about all of us .It means the world right now . Thank You !

Alive & Safe. Yea!!!!! There are Rainbow folks all over Austin. You should be able to hook up with some folks at Ruta Maya on Congress Ave the #13 bus(#1 if you are north of Town Lake) should get you there, Ruta Maya is behind the Expose Gentleman's Club. All we can offer ourselves is tent space in the country but if that's something you're into, please go talk to JuJu Saturday at the 23rd St Artist Mkt. across from UT; he's the colorful hippie with the tie-dyes.
Much Love & Good thoughts to you & yours

It is terrible that the fricken government wont get some food or water etc down there . There has got to be a place to get these people where they are safe and not going to get shot at. Fuck Bush and the gov. if they are not going to do anything . Let the fellow citizens form a gov. if they have to to help those in need !!!

Subject: Re: ATTN: Please Please Please Read this, how Rainbow an help the Gulf people
just got off the phone with huck from green circus. they are awaiting
fuel on the side of the US Rt. 49 in brooklyn, ms, which is very near
the location of the yearly missinhippie gathering. please note that
the eyewall passed over this part of the de soto national forest and it
will probably be completely inaccessible to vehicle traffic possibly
for years due to fallen trees and washed out roads.
huck says they considered doing it rainbow style in the woods until
they realized that no one has gas to drive to the woods and it's too
far to walk. as soon a they get some fuel, they intend to head for
gulfport, ms, which has been virtually wiped off the map like much of
the gulf coast from the la border to mobile, al.
the Granola Funk is carefully springing into action. we have
established NOLA's Ark, which plans to leave from Asheville sometime
between sunday and tuesday. we have secured water tanks and may take
water filters (although not sure if they'd be effective), propane and
propane accessories, pots and coocery, and are working on loading my
bus down with as much good rainbow food as possible to get down there
and start feeding. but we will not be going to the woods. we have not
decided on a destination because we don't know where we can be most
effective. but wherever we go, it will be done in fine Funk style
(stage and all). while our greatest concern is for those who need
help, we are being very careful to respect the situation and not become
refugees ourselves.
for those in the area, NOLA's Ark will host a benefit in Asheville this
coming Thursday night. the best thing family who can't leave to join
the effort can do is to hold their own benefits and otherwise get
together, thank the creator of their choice for their good fortune,
pray for those less fortunate, and support the efforts of those on the
ground however possible.
more info forthcoming as it becomes available. if you're interested in
involving yourself in NOLA's Ark, please email me privately at

Hello to all our friends in South Texas. We will be volunteering for search and rescue missions in Louisianna and on the way back we will be traveling to Houston to adopt several families and provide them with shelter in our homes and help them find employment locally. I am sure there will be no place to live and no decent jobs for quite some time in the local areas affected.
If you have a few days and want to be involved in Search and Rescue or just want to volunteer and help in any way possible then call these numbers in Baton Rouge LA. The volunteer people there are exausted and desparate for help.
225-389-2863
225-389-2861
We tried FEMA and other organizaitions and was put on terminal hold and got nowhere. The numbers above are people ON THE SITE/AREA in Louisianna and are extremely tired and need help. You'll get to talk to an actual person involved in relief efforts.Grab some friends, load up, and get over there. It will be a memory you will never forget and you can tell your grandchildren how you helped your country in this never before event.
Where do you put 1 Million refugees??? As Citizens we can't sit back and rely on the government to do everything.
Use your brains and think out of the norm. Here is an idea...If you know real estate agents, relatives, property managers, or people with resources....ask them to find others who would be willing to give a family free rent or housing for 1-2 months until they can get a job and get back on their feet. Or adopt a family. They have nothing left to go back to.
Can you imagine living in a Stadium? How do you lay down to sleep? How do you sleep with thousands of people constantly making noise?
Raising money is great... but lives are at stake and manpower is needed. If you can volunteer then please do it and call the numbers above. If you have no money other than a jar full of change in your home...then donate to the red cross. $10 will buy a kit to start an IV on someone who is dehydrated and malnourished.
Thanks to everyone for their support! PLEASE REPOST...If one person that sees this message helps in anyway...then we all accomplished something.

rainbow to the rescue
it just goes to show the power & compassion & unconditional love that is the rainbow family of living light.
let our love shine like a beacon of hope, let ou hearts guide us to do what is right, & let our hands do the work needed to make the world a happier place
if all who have bellybuttons are family, we can not ignore the millions of our brothers & sisters suffering..
however i must say this since noone else has, the very last thing they need there is 1 single drainbow who would be a drain on the already severely limmited rescources, if you choose to go & i hope many do make the choice, go in the knowlefdge that your going to be giving all you have, & working your asses off to releive the suffering & dont expect to be having much time to just bliss
although i am glad granola is doing the stage too, cause the entertainment wi,ll go a long way towards restoring a sence of normalcy to life..
we love you

The forest is probably NOT a good idea right now...the flood waters will have awakened a whole new generation of mosquito...and the reptiles (snake and gator alike) need a chance to settle down before people come tramping through....especially down by the water. I still can't get a call thru to Brooklyn 90% of the time...the phone companies are having a heck of a time...even cell phones have been down.
BTW...this is coming from someone that was a Brooklyn,MS local for half a decade. I'm just not sure sending people into the wildernes at this point is a good thing.
Still going down and lending a hand getting clean water and food, etc to displaced people cant be a bad thing....just dont set your mind to the whole "its bad 'cause its in babylon mentality"..it's humanity and it's always there...even on the pavement.

pretty sure that Green Circus & Granola Funk plan on going to where the people are to lend a hand; there's not even gas for people to get to the woods, besides the factors you mentioned, and the inaccessability to the woods due to downed trees

agreed, going to the forresst makes no sence, the people need help in the towns & cities, i think a kitchen within a few blocks of the convention center & another near the stadium or airport is a great idea, & what about calm?
any plans in the works for calm going to help out?
hippiestead
09-03-2005, 06:09 PM
which convention center? New Orleans? they won't let anyone in New Orleans without proper credentials. bout to go check with Austin folks to see in Food not Bombs is doing a Zilker Park feeding or what-Zilker isn't very far from where some of the refugees are housed. the Funk & Green Circus might be heading toward Mississippi & Alabama-those folks aren't getting much help cuz everyone is wrapped up with New Orleans

well i think we have a way of being able to get around the baricades & go where we are most needed wether the powers that be want us thee or not...the people in need would be overjoyed to have us there...so i say go where the need is greatest, & if they try to stop us use the old rainbow magic to confuse them into submission & slip on by to where we need to be

it has been sooo long since i visited this forum that i forgot my info and had to make another account. I knew with all the devastation someone here would be doing something to help. I live in Indiana just a few miles south of indianapolis. I cant offer much but i can come up with some clothes and canned goods and offer the weary travelers a place to rest up before you journey on. please let me know if you will be traveling through my area and can detour. Peace be with you.

I have a small kitchen and I'm itchin' to get down there somethin' fierce. I have help and the ability to manifest food and supplies. I can leave the week of the 12th and be gone for about a week. I would really like to be around family. Where do I go? How hard is it to find gas down there?
Also, some friends of mine have room for a family in Greensboro, NC area. If anyone knows of a family that needs a place to lay their heads, contact Lisa & Loren at lisa@headchangearts.com or call 336.685.5760.

gas is hard to get, best to top off every chance you get, maybe bring a few 5 gal cans. one kitchen heading down from NC is Nola's Ark.
it might be wise to connect with the other Rainbow kitchens to see where each is heading. we'll try to get a kitchen connection thread going on alt.gathering rainbow and make sure all info gets back here to HipForums. we're trying to get a direct e-line with the other kitchens, but so far no word.

i hope that u all who decide to go down there go well prepared and are EXTREMELY self-sufficiant.
many displaced i feel will come to Shawnee and the other coming gatherings and my place is there. i am currently in broad ripple in indianapolis trying to procure gas money and basic supplies for Shawnee seed camp.
i read a north Georgia regional a few threads ago will be beginning oct 15? that will be another gathering i think alot of displaced will go. this problem will be needing 2 be dealt w/ for months.
i honestly think the best way we can help people is to get them to a gathering or out of the immediate area.

NOLA's Ark, with my lady and I on board, is departing from Asheville, NC, probably Friday. The hold up is mostly related to finding a place to land. We won't be able to afford to drive a sk00lie all over south LA/MS/AL looking for a place the Offishuls will let us set up shop, and, yes, we're in touch with those Offishul Guvmint folks. Latest word from Green Circus is that they have landed in Gulfport, and are feeding a couple hundred per day.

If anyone wants to see whats going on, go to New Orleans imc.org, go to phillyimc.org, and see what's happening in that area of houston, those people are locked in the superdome, and no way out. The food and medical supplies is not goping to the people for six days, they are not being told where they are going as they get on a bus. Again this is genocide, where is FEMA, AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING??? tHIS IS HORRIBLE, TO SEE our own people, under the Bush regime suffering. And now the military is down there they have guns. THERE ARE THOSE, WHO HAVE JUST taken the food, and supplies, because they are so poor.

It's dangerous down there, with the National Guard, and the military setting up, coming straight from Iraq, and these people know how to kill, Now I'm scared for the family, stay safe, and disease water, with many toxics in them, everything runned over in the water of New Orleans. Six days they have had no supplies, and no food and water. It's very pitifall, leave it to Bush, they're very balistic to the poor. God Bless the Family.

My cousin was going to LSU and lost everything in the hurricane. He is now looking to relocate to Cali near UCLA where he has a job lined up. he is a white male 29 years old and formerly worked for green peace. My cousin is the most loving and wonderful guy I know, it would be great if someone could help him make a new start. He has a car but would need a place to stay for at least 3 to 6 months while he gets adjusted in Cali. He does work (alot) and would be willing to help with rent after he starts his job and gets settled(about 2 months). By the way he was training to be a chef at one point in new orleans and would be more than happy to help in that area(amazing cook). Please respond ASAP, hes ready for a new beginning. A community inviroment would be great as well as individual

youre right , FEMA isint doing shit . My husband makes a decent salary , but when your banking system is down & you have no way to get your cash , and youre 10 hours from home , it creates a problem . As soon as we found out that everything we owned was destroyed due to flood waters , we called FEMA . They had every excuse in the book for why they may not be able to help us ! So what are we to do ? Starting from scratch for a family with three small children , in a strange place on 1 average salary isnt cake . This goverment sucks !!!!!

Attention Rainbow Family and Kind Souls:
The Rainbow Family is mobilizing a New Orleans Relief Kitchen and Kids' Safe Play Area (including entertainment, games, etc.) and needs volunteers and donations to help the relief work based out of Baton Rouge (home to 500,000 refugees). Opportunities include
Food Service, First Aid including Naturopaths and Alternative Medicine, Counseling of all kinds including Crisis Counseling and Therapy. We also need people with carpentry skills and tools.
A main focus of the group is on creating a safe area for children and families to play together and have fun and have some sense of normalcy in an otherwise very hectic time.
So far we've received many generous pledges of assistance of all types.
People with skills in any of the above areas are welcome to come and work, also anyone able to help bring volunteers & kitchen equip. to the area. First caravan leaving from Asheville on Friday. Location to be announced in the next couple of days as details are worked out with the authorities.
WARNING: *This is not a Rainbow Gathering.* If you show up, be prepared to work hard in a kind and loving environment assisting your fellow beings. Blissininnies and alcoholics strenuously discouraged.
Rainbow Family volunteers have experience setting up kitchens from 30 years of practice at Rainbow Gatherings (annual spiritual camping in national forests) and the folks at the helm of this relief operation are kind, experienced at serving food and entertainment and medicine to thousands of folks a day, and are bringing a full array of kitchen equipment with volunteers from Granola Funk Theater's Kitchen, Everybody's Kitchen, quite possibly Phillipe from Kiddie Village, definitely Jane from C.A.L.M. (Center for Alternative Living Medicine) and other CALM volunteers, and the crew is in contact with the Louisiana Dept. of Emergency Preperaedness as well as local grassroots activists researching the needs, resrources and locations for relief work.

Hawker just called me back. They're in Waveland, MS for now. For anyone else who may be going down, he says:
DO NOT bring clothes or water.
DO bring cleaning supplies, camping gear, liquids with electrolytes like Gatorade, AND your very own special Rainbow abilities.
There is a curfew at 8pm - martial law. So, make sure you get to where you need to be before then.

A U.S. Navy Lieutenant asked me yesterday if I had a
tent in which he could house the telecommunications
equipment. I was too dumbfounded to ask if he had
anything cool to trade, like, maybe, a small aircraft
carrier. Today, a FEMA guy asked be for a bag of ice.
A couple days ago I was exploring the Great Sea of
Clothes piled in the parking lot, and found a box of
medical supplies, and several boxes of books, burried
in the heap. I've seen no donated books, other than
Bibles and religous tracts, and if there was a book
that survived in this town, it was in the attic of a
two story house. Today I heard a Wavelander comment
"I didn't know there were so many different degrees of
'destroyed.'" Standing houses are seldom habitable,
most houses are reduced to rubble, and some people
can't even find their rubble. Have any of y'all read
Conrad's Heart of Darkness? Remember the scene where
there's a railroad car full of rivets in the big port
town, then farther up river there's a boat falling
apart because nobody can get their act together well
enough to get the rivets to the boat? I feel like I'm
the Belgian Congo, circa 1890.
More later.
I got the same email hillbilly, and the brother who sent it out (wanderingturnip) called me last night so I could post up all the info. BTW, for anyone who wonders why he didn't call you, it's just cause I'm on the west coast and it was earlier here, lol.
anyway, that email basicly says it all. Also, they need more people down there, and supplies but (and this is a direct quote) NO WATER and NO CLOTHES. They do need Gatorade, and people, lots of people, who are willing to work. Also, turnip's partner is trying to set up a blog on blogspot.com called New Waveland Cafe (they're in Waveland Mississippi, by the way)
umm, that's it, hope this helps! I'll make it into it's own post later maybe, if people think it should be

i really would love to go down &n do all i can to help, i'm just really brainstorming on how i could plug in most effectively ..i wouldnt want to show up & have it be a too many cooks in the kitchen situation & just get in the way, but if theresa need for someone with no real medical training to help out with calm, doing like a bobo calm or organizing like a database for reconnecting displaced families..i can help there..i've also had some experience with trauma counceling & defusing gang-violence type stuff but all in semi unoficial ways so..i really dont know what or where would be the best way to plug in.. The Rainbow Emergency Management Assembly (REMA)
i love it!
thats always been an aspet of rainbow that i both loved & felt we needed more of in the past i've seen so many beautiful rainbow responces to many different situations where the pressent powers that be fell short in theyre rsponce, i remember floods that left contaminated sandbags everywhere & the government spending millions to "research the best way to dispose of a biohazard" meanwhile monthdss went by & the sandbags remained & rainbow folks rolled up theyre sleeves put on some gloves & trucked those bags away & donated em to an organic farm
& the funy thing was..the city tried to stop us from cleanning up a mess they spent millions on with no ressult & we did it in 4 hours for free.
but i'm getting off track (1 hourssleep last night)
it warms my heart to see mobilization on this scale..cause lets face it..natural disasters are going to be getting worse, & more frequent (according to scientists, not only hopi prophesies) & the governments responce will continue to be half assed at best..& the real burdon will fall onto the general public to help out & it will come down to rainbow showing the way to take minimal rescources & add alot of love & return maximum ressults
for awhile now i've been advocating this on a more local scale..i.e. seeing a need & comming together to fill it (i'm guilty of burning out the past year & slacking off in my personal efforts but this has inspired me to continue with renewed energy ) soits really beautiful to see this happening on a larger scale..i really believe we could overcome just about anything if only enough people put theyre energy into it
pease forgive the horrible spelling & random ramblins, i had less then an hours sleep last night & only 2-3 hours the past 4 nights
love & light & keep your beauty shinning bright
together we can change the world
yeah i knew who sent it paix im just not one to exspose someone when they send me a personal e mail whithout there permission,, but i guess that dont bother you...

No foul, molly. I have a hard time accessing this site, I guess because of all the heavy graphics. I have more luck getting email out. Sometimes the network is up at the same time all two or three generators needed it to run it is on. My list is Bcc, so that's why you don't see the string of eddys. Our partners, the Bastrop Christian Outreach Center, scored a 150 kW generator late last night, only took us 12 hours for us to figger out how to get it off the flatbed with forklifts rated for only 3500 pounds, while fighting off the Powers that wanted to requisition it from us. It should be up and running by Tuesday morning at the latest, so that will fix the power problem! Of course, so would running a temporary box off the main power lines, since I'm told they're hot, but who would the power company bill for this service? And the military still amuses me by asking us hippies for stuff one would think they oughta have, like a compass to align a satelite antenna. One of our Methodist volunteers said of the Cafe "The Kingdom of Heaven must look a lot like this."
I think the only folks on the forums on my mass mail list are paix, hippieestesd, and hillbilly, and unless I specifically state otherwise in the email, PLEASE post them, and foreward them all over the place. You three can arm wrestle over who gets to be my proxy poster. Rumor has it that since we have that generator, City Hall will be moving into this parking lot, so the New Waveland Cafe is gonna be right on the town square. Can anyone out there donate a statue of a Confederate soldier?
Could someone merge this thread with the sticky, please?

I think it's wonderful that the family is ready and willing to respond to the peopel that are in need.It proves to me we are not only out for ourselves and that all our planning and learning how to live in the woods and on the road is not just for parting and having a good time.We can make a difference with love and a helping hand.I can't be there for this one but you can bet there will be more natral disasters to come because she's just as fedup as we all are.Who better adapt to with the aftermath of an act of nature than those who have dedicated themselves to her.

Don't get me wrong. I've had a couple of valuable laughs at some of the odd requests we've had from military personnel. But we're all on the same team, and some of our most valued regular customers are senior NCOs. Those folks would much rather eat stuffed peppers, in a casual social atmosphere, while sitting next to one of the folks that they're here to help, than eat something that comes out of a green plastic bag while sitting on the back of their truck. And a well-placed sergeant or petty officer has the ability to really return a favor.
Dang Fundamentalist Rainbows! Some of our folks want to sort recyclables, and stash them until someplace can be found that will take them away. Aluminum is at $0.41/lb in Gulfport, but no place around here wants cardboard, plastic, or #10 cans (the biggest parts of the pile). An entire city has been trashed here. If we had a hundred hippies with nothing to do but sort recyclables for 12 hours a day in the heat and humidity, they wouldn't be able to make a dent in it. Reality check!
Back to work. More later.

hold your positions! and keep a weather eye on tropical storm rita. We might have to bug out in a couple-three days if that thing turns north, or go feed Houston, or something. we're on stand-by for Rita, Turnup. the hippiestead is about 100 miles from Houston; we can do weekends if this is as bad as they're saying. Bastrop Co is where we live, Lee Co. side; volunteered packing those bedrolls for y'all; called the thrift store for pillows, they were out cuz of the folks who evacuted from Louisiana; didn't know that stuff was for Waveland.
HHB & Paix can handle the Hippyland posts if they want, we'll cover the MySpace Rainbow groups. Texas Rainbow chat group will have any news about Rita's damage as long as we have electric; predictions say we'll get 70 mph winds & lots of rain, even this far inland.

Ok, so you want to help? We were a week or more on the phone planning and networking before we made our move, and Prior Planning did prevent piss-poor performance, even though little of our plan survived once we landed. Now is the time to start planning our response to the impending disaster in Texas. Now is the time to ask your boss for a week off in a couple weeks so you can come here, or Texas, and help out. Now is the time to get on the phone, or on your computers, and start networking in your area to gather supplies and equipment. We have the infrastructure together now to move proactively (I've been going to too many damn meetings if I'm using words like "proactively") on some small, quiet coastal town that's about to be devastated. We won't know where exactly until after Rita makes landfall, but it will probably be someplace few folks have heard of before, and the Government and Media will ignore, the Waveland of Texas. Our partners from Bastrop are already laying down supply lines, and we've been in contact with Family from around Austin and San Antonio. Some crew will stay here, but the New Waveland Cafe can run on Auto-Pirate now if it has to, even if it might loose some of it's Rainbow ambiance, and if you're coming down I-10, we're on the way. We'll land a crew where it's needed as soon after the storm as the roads are drivable.
Things are getting downright civilized here. There's a wringer washing machine. I've gone from showering with bottled water, to using one of the public showers, to having a private shower for me and my Lady, and our immediate camp neighbors. Radio Waveland went on the air today, a low wattage public access station, and I spent most of the day on the 'net looking up stories of local interest for the news. Lt Moore seems so have a lot of the kinks worked out of our wireless network. Go Navy! But we also made contact with a Rainbow Sister who has been running a small kitchen about 7 miles from here in a poor neighborhood, and she's still making contact with folks who are just making it out of their homes for the first time since the storm. The conditions she described there are horrible. We're able to send her all the food she'll need, but there's still a shortage of family sized tents, like cabin tents, and propane stoves, and ice chests, and batteries. 12-volt fans! Especially the kind that run off D cells, but that some local handyman can re-wire to run off a car battery if needed. I could give away thousands of those here.

We're now working in conjunction with ACT, a Seventh Day Adventist disaster response group, BCOC, as well as all local authorities who tell us the New Waveland Cafe is the largest feeding kitchen on the Mississippi coast. Accordingly, they have provided multiple large shelters, supplies, equipment, National Guard engineering troops for design and construction projects. The expanded New Waveland Cafe should be able to accommodate 5000 people comfortably at each meal. Some people travel 50 miles just to get our home cookin' and to visit our friendly clinic that is open and staffed 24/7. Meanwhile, we're closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Rita in anticipation of landing another emergency relief kitchen on another devastated area in Texas as soon as the weather permits. Our Rita response will be a consuming topic of discussion at tonight's 8pm meeting. After our 8pm meeting, we will discuss possible joint operations with the folks we've been working with here, Bastrop Community Outreach Center (BCOC). These folks have families in the path of Rita because they are from Texas. We've had the opportunity to work closely with them for the past week and a half and they are Family whether they know it or not. I will disseminate the contents of these meetings later. I think we need to be realistic about this one, folks. Assuming the 90 degree Gulf waters and favorable winds don't slow down Rita, this storm could be even worse than Katrina and will affect a far more densely populated area. Jim Gray, the meteorologist whose forecasts on hurricanes have been the most accurate over the years, said today that he's only seen one storm that looked worse than Rita: Katrina. I'm on the ground here and can make the following observations and predictions based on our experience. 1. The federal government will put on a show but will provide very little of value. Brownie may be gone, but the upper echelons of emergency management are populated with incompetent cronies who appear to be more concerned with PR and their own comfort than the people they allegedly serve. What resources and competent line officers they do possess (most of FEMA) are thinly stretched over the vast wasteland left by Katrina and bureaucratic mismanagement. I can see the spin machine warming up now. 2. The Military and National Guard response will be inadequate. Over half of the Texas National Guard is in either Iraq or MS/LA. Bush trumpeted the great feat of sending 5000 Guard Troops to Texas. To do what? Secure Houston's shopping district? Multiply that number by ten and we're getting more realistic. As a side note, the military and National Guard deployed here in Waveland have been helpful, hard-working, and qualified for the jobs they are doing (which is what they signed up for). However, they are too few. BTW, about 50 of them are regulars at the New Waveland Cafe. 3. Texas Gov. Rick "Goodhair" Perry will prove to be the most incompetent public servant in history, eclipsing Brownie as government boob of the year. The State of Texas is completely bankrupt due to insane fiscal policy since 1994 (stealing from the government and giving to Enron). Count on very little from the state except for well disciplined professional law enforcement officers who will rise above the chaos above them. And spin. 4. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, and the usual relief groups had to fill so many gaps usually filled by the federal government during emergencies, they are deployed in numbers that defy their capabilities. They are already stretched far too thin and will only be able to mount a minimal response that will detract from ongoing and extremely necessary operations responding to Katrina. As a sidebar, the Red Cross is attempting to break through its own red tape and deploy the wave of volunteers who showed up in the wake of Katrina, attended disaster training, and awaited assignment. If you intend to take the Red Cross route, go get your disaster training now. Deployment often takes a long time. That leaves the folks who have responded so generously to Katrina: all the churches, civic organizations, and our own little anomoly, REMA. It started out as a joke sign I hung on my bus. Now it looks like something able to raise a coordinated quick response from our base of operations here in the central Gulf Coast at the New Waveland Cafe. One thing we showed ourselves and other disaster responders: we're really good at landing quickly and getting aid to folks who need it. We take our experiences from Katrina with us as we consider expanding into another theatre. Stay tuned for updates. As I wrote before, we are monitoring Rita and preparing a potential response based on need and resources at hand. Be prepared to be drafted into REMA. We may need you, whatever equipment you have in your garage or barn, your expertise, and most of all, your prayers. Because we may be all the stands between life and death for the millions about to be impacted by Rita on one side and a criminally inadequate government response on the other. Let's all pray for a cold wind to blow out of the north and blow Rita apart. Much Love Arjay ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This message was brought to you by Pronoid Central (c). STILL absolutely, positively convinced that you are out to help us.

You can't even slow us down! Well, OK, you can slow us down. But it takes a near miss by a hurricane to do it. As Rita swung farther and farther to the North and east, we started to get a bit nervous. Friday night and Saturday morning, every other aid organization in the County ran like the Mexican Army at San Jacinto. But the Hippies stood firm, tike the Texans at the Alamo, only without that massacre afterwards. We had moments when things got a bit on the panicky side, like Saturday morning when the 'net was down, and we heard a tornado warning for Waveland. (But it hit well north of here.) We had heard rumors that Rita was swinging farther north, and prepared to leave on short notice if needed, but once the computer came back online, and we had access to accurate, up-to date information, folks calmed down. Friday and Saturday we had the best weather I've seen since I've been here. I'll take wind and a bit of rain, with clouds, over that blazing sun any day! We still served 3 meals Saturday, in our newly redecorated Tornado Lounge. Fed the entire Waveland Police and Fire Departments supper, and afterwards, a Virginia State Trooper played drums with us for a while.
Civilization is a fragile thing. The storm knocked down most of our showers. Radio Free Waveland is off the air for another day or so. We had to drop all our large tents, for fear of them being damaged by high winds, so today we've had no shade, and the sun is back, off and on. The wind should mellow out enough tomorrow so we can get tents back up. Ice has been short today, and our drink kegs got temporarily reorganized out of existence in our rush to batten down, so we've been unable to mix Gatorade or juice. Water just isn't enough in this heat. But our Bastrop partners came back this afternoon, and are helping us get back to running at full capacity tomorrow.
Fillipe left Friday also, but he's preparing to deploy to Texianna. Folks will be scouting areas of need as soon as they can get in. I understand that most of the roads in Southern Louisiana are under water, but he should land somewhere in a couple-three days. We'll probably hear from him in about a week. Harrison County Emergency Operations Command wants us to stay through Thanksgiving. My lady and I have to leave Monday, though. Perhaps I can come back in a couple weeks to a month..

I finally got out of camp today, took a bike ride down to the beach. I had seen the pictures, heard the descriptions, but still wasn't prepared for the sight of everything south of the railroad tracks destroyed. Buildings--Substantial brick and masonry buildings--scraped down to the slab, the 2X4s that were the bases of the walls and bolted to the slab ripped off, nothing left but bolts sticking out of the concrete. No buildings standing within a half mile of the beach. Half mile to a mile inland, buildings washed off their foundations, roofs sitting atop piles of rubble (Was that pile the house that was originaly under that roof? Or did the roof come from somewhere else?) And not just here. Bay St Louis, Pass Christian, Pearlington, D"Iberville...The Works of Man on the Mississippi Gulf Coast are gone.
Cops found two more bodies near the beach while we were there.
Leaving tomorrow. Should be back by Early November.

The following was forwarded from ORB (Ozark Rainbow Bulletin)
---------- Forwarded message ----------
'Where we were in Waveland, Ms (just west of Bay St.
Louis, where the hurricane made landfall), a huge
storm surge came in. The amount of water in people's
houses varied according to the landforms: from about 1
1/2 feet up to about 30 feet. I would say about 90% of
the houses are either totally destroyed or now covered
in mold and hazardous to health. Most people who
stayed through the storm, or returned afterwards to
find their houses in ruins, are living in their yards
in tents and tarps and, if they're lucky, rv's and
trailers. Or else they are staying in nearby towns and
shelters and coming down to try to salvage anything
from their houses and yards.
The water ruined most of the trees and plants in town
and drove away or drowned the birds, insects, and
wildlife. Everything is brown, shattered, covered in
mud, and stinks to high heaven from decaying in the
~100 degree heat. This goes on and on and almost seems
unreal to someone from a living, vibrant place. On a
positive note, we saw a Dandelion blooming and a
Wisteria making a few flowers.
Thousands of companion animals were either lost or
abandoned. The woods and debris piles are home to many
cats, who are too traumatized to let you approach
them. Stray dogs also abound. Many of the animals are
injured, mangy, and starving. The animal rescue folks
are working their butts off trying to get them all in,
but there are so many. Efforts are being made to
re-unite animals with their owners, but some of them
are deceased or unable to take their animals to
shelters or motels. Many animals and horses trapped in
barns have drowned, but some survived and need caring
for.
Many animals are being taken to the shelter in
Hattiesburg, MS. They will be kept for 30 days in case
their people come looking for them. Then they are up
for adoption. Unfortunately, there are so many that
some will have to be euthanized. Please adopt if you
can.
Many people are staying in the devastated areas,
without city water or electricity. They don't want to
abandon their property or their family homes of
generations. Many are local farmers, fisherman, or
townspeople who can't imagine living anywhere else.
Many of them weathered Hurricane Camile in '69 and
they all say this one was much, much worse, and nobody
thought so much water could come so far inland. Don't
blame anyone for staying. They just didn't forsee the
extent of this huge storm.
The local people here have been extremely nice and
welcoming to us. They have an admirable spirit of
survival and persistance. I can't say enough about how
kind and open-hearted they have been. People are
looking after their neighbors, sharing supplies, and
doing whatever they can to help one another. Many are
feeding the stray animals.
Many of the people, of all backgrounds and economic
classes, have lost every material thing they had. The
water ruined their houses, possessions, tools,
appliances, automobiles (thousands of dead cars and
trucks are scattered everywhere). Many can't get
around except on bicycles or by walking and
hitchhiking. Most folks don't have electricty and
won't get it because the wiring in their buildings is
ruined. The power company has started running wires
down from power poles to trailers and rvs for the
lucky people who have them. There is no telephone
service, and cell phone service is being
re-established and mostly works ok in some areas;
other areas have no cell service at all. They have the
sewage treatment plant working and city water is
coming back to some places, but (as of Sunday, Sept.
17) was considered unsafe to drink.
Many people lost their jobs when businesses were
destroyed along with everything else. Unemployment,
food stamps, Red Cross, and FEMA relief money is
slowly getting to folks, which helps some, but since
there is only one store open in town (a gas
station/convenience store), there's not much to buy.
People who are lucky enough to have functioning cars
(i.e., those who left and came back afterwards) and
gas money are driving to the Walmart in Picayune,
about 25 miles away, to buy stuff or wash clothes.
Many people can't do this, however. Either they have
no car, no money, little kids they have to stay with,
or are afraid to leave their houses vulnerable to
looters.
By the way, there has been some looting but nothing on
the scale of New Orleans. The local law enforcement
has been very focused on arresting troublemakers and
getting them out of town. We personally experienced no
violence or theft while we were there, even in "bad"
neighborhoods that some folks warned us about. We left
our van open most of the time and nothing ever went
missing. I even lost my cell phone at one point and it
was returned an hour later by a little old man on a
bicycle who had nothing left but his cats.
Many different types of people showed up to help. The
Florida Highway patrol has been totally wonderful.
They are experienced with hurricane recovery and have
been very caring and sensitive. They are working
hand-in-hand with the church groups and hippies to
help people and keep things orderly. The local fire
department and police department and sheriff are doing
the same - making do with what little they have left.
Nearly all of their cars, trucks, and equipment were
destroyed too. The Red Cross came and delivered hot
meals for a few days, but now they are nowhere to be
found in Waveland and surrounding areas. The gossip is
that they are having serious administrative problems,
and while the workers are busting butt, they are being
hindered by inept beaurocracy. FEMA has finally got
some stuff moving, and they established an office in
Waveland and are distributing trailers to the many,
many homeless folks and other aid. The National Guard
is directing traffic, manning checkpoints to keep
sightseers and troublemakers out after curfew (8 pm),
distributing ice and water, and generally making
everone feel like there's some stability in the area.
The individual guardsmen and women have been very kind
and friendly to all.
Mari and I were involved in establishing the largest
independent and coalition relief center on the Gulf
Coast. We call it the New Waveland Cafe and Relief
Center. Working in a kind of creative and positive
chaos, many groups (includipendent individuals have
erected a village in the parking lot of a destroyed
shopping center. We built a cafe that serves three hot
meals a day to any and all comers for free. The food
folks are working their butts off to keep cooking,
organizing supple, and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.
At night sometimes people play music there.
The Rainbow family folks brough buses and are running
the kitchen in conjuction with a church group called
BCOC and others, all working together. It's beautiful
how people of very different backgrounds have come
together for this.
The firemen built showers out of plastic and lumber
and set up a tanker with a generator, so folks can
have warm, clean showers. We also have a medical tent
with an EMT and MD and RN available 24/7. They sleep
right in the tent and do everything from wound care to
vaccination (tetanus and hepatitis are a concern).
They have a defibrillator and other EMT equipment. If
someone is in serious trouble they go to the mobile
hospital about 1/2 mile down the road in the Kmart
parking lot.
We have a big tent housing a free store where people
can pick up canned and boxed food, bottled water,
diapers, baby wipes, baby food, personal car items,
toys, school supplies, cleaning supplies, batteries,
etc, etc, all the stuff you need. Out back there are
pallets full of dog and cat food and pet supplies.
There are mountains of donated clothing too. These
supplies have come from all over the country and are
greatly needed and appreciated by the people.
Now, to what you can do to help.
PLEASE DO NOT: send money to Red Cross if you want to
help Waveland. They have plenty of cash to do whatever
they are doing, which I hope is somewhere else because
we're not seeing it here. DO NOT send bottled water.
We have too much. DO NOT send clothing, again there is

IF there's any way in the world you can get away to
volunteer, hands are desperately needed at the center.
We need folks to cook, clean, organize, and help in a
thousand ways. If you are a hard worker, go down.
Don't listen to any news reports that say folks aren't
needed. There is a curfew after 8 pm, just get there
before then, and nobody will stop or question you. The
local law enforcement folks are delighted to see us.
If you can go down: look up directions on maps.google.com (http://maps.google.com/). You come in on I-10 and take 43/603
down to HWY 90 in waveland/bay st. louis. 90 is open
along there but bridges are out on both the E and W
ends, so you can only get into the area by coming down
43/603. At the intersection of 43/603 and 90 there is
a national guardsman directing traffic. Go West
towards Waveland. The relief center is across from the
watertower. You'll see a big red-and-white striped
tent next to a blue-and-white one and a lot of cars.
Go to the cafe tent and talk to Felipe or Erin or RJ
or anyone in a bright green shirt. They will set you
up to help. You will be camping out in your vehicle or
tent in the parking lot. It's HOT and HUMID. But you
will be fed and there is anything you need there,
including a refrigerated truck to crash in when you
can't take in anymore. PLEASE DO NOT bring young
children or pets. If they are old enough to work hard
and help and can take the heat, you could consider it.
This place is a mess and only workers should be here.
The relief center is expected to be operating
throughout October. Please send supplies or get down
there to help as soon as possilbe. It will be the
experience of a lifetime for you.
Many thanks and blessings!

No no! The cops figured out that Green Circus Kitchen in Gulfport are hippies. I got back from down there a week ago and Gulfport was healing - businesses opening, people going back to work. Gulfport is a lot better off than Waveland. Green Circus getting the impetus to move on has nothing to do with the New Waveland Cafe.

Thanks for the clarification, we fixed our post above; thought it sounded strange since Turnup said New Waveland Cafe would be running into Nov.
Talked to New Waveland Cafe and they need VOLUNTEERS!!!!!!!!
It's hot sweaty draining work. but well worth it.
They are also seeking an air conditioned RV, bus, truck, someplace where people can get out of the heat for a while.
The Tornado Lounge is now serving iced coffee smoothies & Gatoraid Arjay said.

REAL HELP AND A TRUE MODEL OF EFFICIENCY
WAVELAND - Across from the Waveland Police Department in the Fred's parking lot is a group of people set up to feed up to 5,000 people a day. Let me repeat that....5,000 people a DAY. They have a clinic set up like a battlefield triage center. They are giving out tetanus shots and vaccinations, prescribing heart medication, fully licensed medical practitioners who have made it a life style to camp out in national parks all over America every year surviving on nothing more than the land. They subscribe to no religion or political party, they have no hierarchical structure to speak of and they don't take "no" for an answer when it comes to helping those who desperately need it. They pitched a tent, started working with a Christian organization out of Texas who were already on the ground there by the second day after Hurricane Katrina hit, and began forming what may be the most efficiently run disaster relief center on the entire Gulf Coast. And who is funding this well-oiled machine, you ask?
No one.
Meet the "Rainbow Gathering" out of Asheville, NC. A group (more like a "tribe") of PhDs, MDs, nurses and other professionals who took it upon themselves to purposely take their survival skills and their medical and professional experience into the "battle zone" with nothing more than the small amount of money they raised between themselves and a small fund raiser in their town of Asheville, North Carolina. They have been braving unbearable heat, ungodly humidity and the sheer numbers of people coming to them for help. Feeding up to 5,000 people a day can take its toll on anyone...but imagine doing so in one of the most inhospitable environments in the United States today? Even so, they have affectionately named their haven and hovel "The New Waveland Cafe". A fitting and friendly name, befitting a fitting and friendly group of people. http://www.newwavelandcafe.blogspot.com/
With little more than tents over their heads during the day, sleeping in the backs of their cars at night and pulling 16-hour shifts, Brad Stone, RJ, Scott and Hawker - along with about 30 other associates - are doing what no government or donor-funded organization has done so far....gotten organized. And I don't mean just your average organization. This is a totally non-competitive, non-hierarchical, transparent accounting, complete sharing of lessons learned each and every day group. They have a plan of attack each and every day. They have a HAM radio set up to call out to the EOC for supplies (and thanks goes out to Mike Sweeney at the EOC who has been in touch with them, getting them all the supplies they ask for! Thanks, Mike!) They teamed up with the Bastrop Christian Outreach Center, out of Bastrop, TX (http://www.bastropchristianoutreachcenter.org/) who had been on the ground there from the very first days after Hurricane Katrina struck. What is interesting here is that a Christian ministry and a secular organization who holds to no set religious beliefs have come together, joined forces and are a powerhouse of efficiency! They have been gaining momentum in caring for the people of Waveland, including getting medical supplies, but they have received very little assistance from FEMA in any way.
"The problem with FEMA," says RJ, the newly appointed Communications Department, "is that they work from the head...not the heart. It's a job to them and they don't know what it takes to work in this environment." Since the Rainbow group has for years been setting up camp in inhospitable climates, living off the land and surviving by honing their outdoor skills, they were able to set up directly on the asphalt pavement, where heat indexes rise to well over 100 degrees every day. "It's hot! We see dozens of people each and every day that are dehydrated and suffering from heat exhaustion. Water won't do in this heat, people need to replenish their electrolytes. We bought 84 boxes of emergency packets (multivitamins) with our own money. Mix this in with an eight-ounce glass of water and in about ten minutes, the person is fine again. We've gone through all of them in a matter of days and need to get more. We're used to this since we do this all the time, but these FEMA people don't have a clue. They can't manage what they don't understand."
Brad Stone (just call him "Stone") is a PhD / MD and spent $2,500 of his own money to purchase a defibrillator to have on hand, just in case. So far, the Rainbow volunteers have treated two heart attacks, provided neonatal care, wound dressings, dozens of vaccinations, tetanus shots, triage, dispensed medication and have written prescriptions for people who can then go to the Walmart, which had just opened up in Bay St Louis, to fill what the Rainbow people don't have in stock.
Even though they feel they have been hampered in their efforts to care for people, a representative meets with the EOC every morning a 9 a.m. to fill them in on what is happening. FEMA has actually inspected their "facility" and checked out their credentials. According to Stone, "Some guy from FEMA stormed in and demanded that I show him some credentials. So I showed him my medical license to practice. He said "Oh" and just left. I haven't seen him come back yet. We have been asked by the EOC to stay until Thanksgiving because we are providing such a necessary service."
Where are they in terms of this crisis, I asked? "We are in the middle of half-crisis, half-chronic problems now," says RJ. "We are working in sweltering heat with no break from it. We desperately need a van, large camper, blood mobile...something air conditioned just to get people out of the heat for even a little while. They have plenty of trailers running over at the EOC but when we ask for them, the people just give us this stare and say 'we'll try to do something.' We need camping gear to get people back to a semblance of order in their lives. When we have cots or tents, people snap them up immediately. We could use a large circus tent, trailer with AC, propane stoves, pots and pans. We also need doctors and nurses...we feel like we're working with one hand tied behind our back."
If this is what these "non-official" volunteers are doing with one hand tied behind their backs....they are certainly in the running for citizens of the year. And more importantly, showing the world what common sense and a structured plan with experience can do without having to wade through useless red tape and bureacracy.
The Rainbow Gathering, on their own and donated funds from Asheville, have sent ANOTHER fully stocked kitchen to Lake Charles, LA to help the citizens there, as well. "We have yet another fully stocked kitchen that we asked for and is being delivered down here to Waveland, too," says RJ. "We're thinking of sending it over to Pass Christian where we know there is a huge need over there, especially with the Vietnamese population there that is not being cared for." How are you going to handle all three sites, I asked. "We are getting some volunteers coming down from North Carolina to help us out, but we're gonna do this any way we can. We're not asking for a hundred doctors or nurses or volunteers because we do things a little bit different from regular organizations, but we could sure use the help."
Any medical person or volunteer wishing to donate their time to a truly outstanding cause, please contact the Rainbow Gathering's medical contact, Stone at 773-407-0854. For those who wish to get more information, donate money to help them continue on working, or volunteer to help, contact RJ at 828-280-6338.
Want to know more about the Rainbow Gathering, go to http://www.newwavelandcafe.blogspot.com/ , RJ has been posting some interesting blog entries and photos when he can.
When I investigated this group and had a chance to talk with the different members, I felt it was all important to focus an entire article on them, simply because this was the kind of effort we were expecting from the larger, more well-funded formal organizations. Since this support never materialized, even after FOUR WEEKS, it was apparent that energy and funds needed to be pushed in the direction that was doing the most good. According to Stone, the Red Cross has officially made it known that the Rainbow group's facility is now serving as the largest relief facility along the Gulf Coast by far. I can honestly say that when I got off the phone from talking to Stone, Scott, Hawker and RJ, I was singularly impressed. In addition to the fine donations sites addressed below, I will also be including the Rainbow Gathering as a truly exceptional and worthwhile donations cause, as well. As soon as I receive word that they are set up to receive donations, I will post the information immediately.
FEMA, Red Cross....take notice. THIS is how to operate. Friends reading this...help them in any way you possibly can. They deserve it!

It's pretty obvious that REMA can do a lot with very little (course most of us already knew that) Had an idea today, if we can get some hippie bands to help raise funds for REMA, they'll be able to spread the Love even farther. Maybe the an air conditioned RV would show up quickly. If everyone e-mails the Dead, String Cheese, Phish and anyone you can think of, maybe they'd help. It's worth a shot.

Here's the latest from AGR. The folks in Waveland don't have much time to be on the internet and part of the crew is in the process of moving. Please give them a hand by distributing this info. Thanks!
Greetings from the New Waveland Cafe!
New Waveland Cafe Reconstructed after Rita
Announcing the Tornado Lounge
Please Call Before Coming Here and Don't Bring Children
FOR WIDE DISTRIBUTION
Things are running smoothly again here in Waveland after everyone
EXCEPT the New Waveland Cafe bugged out for Hurricane Rita. *Many folks
still living in tents and tarps on the toxic ground were unable to flee
and
were grateful for three hot meals a day in spite of high winds, lots of
rain, and scattered tornados.
We had to take down our large tents, but the structure we served under
for those five days--an army tent donated by China--remains standing as
the Tornado Lounge, serving ice cold smoothies all day long.
Inaugurated on Monday night after re-setting the kitchen and Cafe under
our
large tents, the Tornado Lounge serves as a mellow place for playing
music,
reading, socializing, and forgetting the day's traumas in this troubled
corner of the world.
If you plan to volunteer at the New Waveland Cafe, please call me at
(828) 280-6338. *We now have a procedure in place for plugging in an
appropriate number of volunteers for what we are doing here. *We match
your
dates and skills with our needs.
Once again, please note: *IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, DO NOT BRING THEM HERE
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER. *WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY VOLUNTEERS
WHO BRING CHILDREN. *This is a disaster zone. *The level of toxicity in
the area coupled with extreme and unrelenting heat (index at 105-115
every day) make this a graveyard for infants, small children, sick
people, and folks in not the best shape.
Only come here if you are in excellent health and physical condition.
A volunteer with our partner, BCOC, has been hospitalized with a heart
attack due to heat stroke. *Others drop every day from heat exhaustion.
We have no need whatsoever for volunteers who cannot put in a full
day's work in extreme heat. *Furthermore, we all worry about the
effects of
long-term exposure to this environment.
WE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO SUBJECT YOUR CHILDREN TO THESE CONDITIONS ON
OUR BEHALF.
On a side note, you should leave your dog at home, too. *I regret
bringing Calvin, a tough old road dog who is having an extremely hard
time
here even with a somewhat air conditioned bus to live in. *Other dogs
who have arrived are not happy either. *There's too much toxic mischief
for them to get into here, no water in which to cool off, no non-toxic
place to lay on the ground--in short, not a good place for dogs.
Hancock County EOC has asked the New Waveland Cafe to remain open until
Thanksgiving. *Aaron, Clovis, Stone, and I have accepted and plan to
remain. *Others will probably also stay or come and go. *Again, please
call before showing up.
I'm going to attempt to post the minutes from our 8pm Meeting every
day. *Like everything I do in communications, it depends on how much
time
I have available and how well the internet is working.
Thanks for your Continuing Support

(question from fayeautumn. i tend to forget that heron is already logged on. i apologize.)
you kept mentioning about "level of toxicity," will you explain more? and "we all worry about the effects of long-term exposure to this environment."
what kind of effects do you think will happen? i'm worried for all of you good people. i wish i can lend a helping hand, but at the moment, i'm expecting and very close to my due date. a happy occasion for sure. i'm just happy my husband can be down there to help, though i don't think he called first :). i hope everything continues to get better. thank you for all the good you guys are doing down there.

The latest from Waveland:
New Waveland West Rumors
VA Highway Patrol Entertains
Need New PA Gear and Soundman (Hawker!)
Many Comings and Goings
FOR WIDE DISTRIBUTION
Howdy from the Rubble...
Deanne tells me that the Barefoot Drs Academy along with Felipe and
crew are getting ready to set up in Washington Park in New Orleans. Still
awaiting details, but the New Waveland Cafe will do everything it can
to support this effort. More as this breaking REMA news develops.
Here at the New Waveland Cafe, we've been blessed by Eli Jones and his
magical PA gear, which has come in very handy now that curfew has been
moved back to 11pm. There's been music in the cafe at night and
revolution in the air. This past evening, Jason--who comes to us courtesy of
the Virginia Commonweatlth Highway Patrol--played a smokin set on
acoustic guitar backed up up by Dr. David on drums, a guy with the word
"Herb" displayed largely on the back of his shirt on percussion, Eli Jones
on bass, and his father Jimmie Jones on lead guitar. I opened
tonight's festivities and a local man named Wes played a set as well. Tonight
was the second night Jason spent on the New Waveland Cafe Stage and we
will miss him. Today was his last shift in Waveland. Bon Voyage,
Jason. Come back soon.
Alas, Eli and his PA system have to return to medical school on Friday
morning. Both will be missed. The atmosphere is electric and it was a
joy to see folks in Waveland enjoying themselves at the show. They're
starting to come down just for the show.
So the New Waveland Cafe is now putting out the APB: WE NEED A PA
SYSTEM AND SOMEONE TO RUN IT. Also helpful: At least one guitar that plugs
into a PA system, SM 57 and 58 microphones, chords, stands. A decent
electric keyboard would also be a good thing. Drums and other
percussion instruments will also help. There's nothing like a drum circle to
bring a community together. Lots of folks just get up and join into the
jam session. If they had instruments before, they doin't have them
now. This can be nothing but a good thing for Waveland.
Let us know if you can help.
Eli is one of many difficult goings this week. We learned recently
that Leviticus, Theodora, Daniel, and Amber all have pressing committments
elsewhere. We've been through a serious chapter in one anothers' lives
here. Friends you make here are friends for life. I know how
difficult it is to leave here. Many who have left have returned. It's a
joyful reunion. Hopefully their absence will be temporary.
Organic Valley/CROPP in Wisconsin is sending several volunteers to the
the New Waveland Cafe next week. Clovis's hometown in Wisconsin has
also recently sent us its second wave of High School students
volunteering at The New Waveland Cafe as part of the YIHS program. Two of the
students from the first wave snuck into the second. One of them
facilitated our 8pm meeting two nights ago. Good kids. Hard workers. We
anticipate a third wave next week.
We've decided to expand our staff, so please call if you wish to
volunteer. It's starting to cool off outside and things are getting a little
more relaxed. But please, no children.
Beautiful Things are Happening in Waveland. I wish I had time to tell
more stories right now, but it'll have to wait. Look for a long blog
post about how everyone bugged out during Rita--except us--within the
next day or so.

hi everyone. just got back from waveland this morning, while things are going well, there is still much to be done. while not everyone can make the trip down, there is still plenty that can be done from wherever you are. one of the biggest issues is the sanitation department decided to haul off most of the clothes we had to share in the wee hours of the morning a day or so ago. there are also people still living under tarps and there is a waiting list just to get a tent. any warm clothing, sleeping bags, blankets or tents in usable shape would be greatly appreciated. more kynd folks to help out would also be a blessing. i'll be in the lafayette, La area in a few days, anyone wanting to donate anything or would like a ride to help in waveland please pm me. i will be returning to waveland on november 15th or 16th. peace and blessings to all, and special thanks to all who have helped us in every possible way.

New Waveland Cafe goes Postal
Howdy All...
Hope you've enjoyed all the news articles about our efforts on the Gulf Coast. I've been taking a well-earned but still working vacation in Florida. Much good karma and good wishes go out to the folks at Magnolia Fest, who graciously took me as a volunteer at the last minute so I wouldn't have to pay the admission fee. I did manage to put a flier in Peter Rowan's hand and talked to a lot of musicians, potential volunteers, and others about what we're doing.
As many of you probably know, Rob Savoye has set up www.REMARelief.net (http://www.remarelief.net/) to house the ever-growing volume of information surrounding our various relief efforts as they blossom in many locations stricken by hurricanes this fall. Our new and improved donations page lives there as well. And yes, you can finally make a tax deductible donation to the New Waveland Cafe, thanks to the Action Hero Network and the National Institute for the Humanities.
Most recently, I've been in touch with Barry Sacharow who lives in Hollywood, FL. Barry tells me things look grim in South Florida, which took a direct hit from Wilma as a strong Cat 2 it wasn't expecting. FEMA has apparently shown the same competence it has with Katrina and Rita except that it wasn't able to put up a fence to keep media out of South Florida like it did with Rita. Barry is currently assessing how and if REMA may be of assistance. We'll know in the next couple of days if we need to put something together.
Rob tells me the Welcome Home Cafe in New Orleans continues to serve more and more people as folks return in greater numbers. We've identified at least one more potential kitchen location in New Orleans and expect this to heat up in the next week or two as the picture becomes clearer in NOLA.
I'm attaching the most current wish list for the New Waveland Cafe in Word format. I'll try to get a PDF version posted to the website.

Locals aided in Katrina relief
With the media focusing on the hurricane Katrina devastation in New Orleans, often overlooked is that other parts of the Gulf region were also hard hit by the storm.
Two local women, Terra Costello and Ty Speck, recently returned from two weeks in Mississippi where they worked at a relief kitchen in the town of Waveland in the Gulf of Mexico.

The following comes from Turtle, a volunteer at the
Welcome Home Cafe in New Orleans.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++
Hey all!
As Rainbow Family, I'm emailing you because there is a
serious need on the Gulf Coast due to Hurricane
Katrina and we need your help! Make no mistake, this
disaster is FAR from over and the hurricane victims
need our support more than ever.
If you don't already know, several kitchens, the
CALM/MASH unit from the gatherings and dedicated,
focused brothers and sisters came down to Waveland, MS
and shortly after, New Orleans, to set up a rainbow
emergency management assembly to give support and
relief.
There have been thousands and thousands of people
helped, and even more are on their way (in the case of
New orleans). However, the work is intense and
constant and our crew people can only go on for so
long. So, as a result, we are putting a CALL out to
you, our Family, for SEASONED, DEDICATED,HEALTHY,
RAINBOW SAAVY brothers and sisters, AND, functional,
MOBILE KITCHENS, to come down and HELP! The time is
NOW to take what we've learned from all those years of
Gatherings and put it into practise in Waveland and,
especially, New Orleans.
If you are one of those brave individuals who wish to
plug in, please R.S.V.P. at this email
turtlebambam@yahoo.com (turtlebambam@yahoo.com)
The need for mobile kitchens is solely for New
Orleans, as more people are returning to the city,
only to find that they don't have utilities, or simply
can't even live in their own home. So, they are
turning to us.
We need to set up several sattelite relief stations
thruout the hardest hit neighborhoods. SOOOO, if you
are wise in the ways of focalizing a hygenic, large
community kitchen, people who have the ability to work
people thru post traumatic stress disorder,
psychological councelors, social workers,working at
dessiminating and gathering information (INFO. at the
gatherings), have knowledge about focalizing main
supply at gatherings (i.e. ordering and acquiring
large amounts of supplies, or are simply one of those
kind, family members who just knows how to plug in and
fill in the holes when needed, PLEASE CALL OR E MAIL!
We can provide a place to stay and food, if you are
dedicated to being a full time volunteer while you are
down here. Please remember that one of our greatest
threats to a peaceful and unified future being made
for these victims, indeed all of us, is apathy and
complacency. The time to exercize what we have learned
from the gatherings and the Earth is NOW!
Love and strength,
New Waveland and Welcome Home Relief Stations

New Waveland Cafe to Close After Thanksgiving, Parade
New Waveland Clinic Needs Doctors & Nurses
Many Volunteers & Resources Heading to New Orleans
Call for Donations to Deal With Move
No Need for S. Florida Response
Greetings
When we first landed in Waveland back in early
September, no one figured we'd stay here for more than
a couple of weeks. Personally, I thought I'd be home
in Asheville by October 1. Then Mike Sweeney of the
Hancock County EOC asked us to stay until
Thanksgiving. That seemed very remote and far off
until now.
The New Waveland Cafe 8pm Meeting addressed this issue
in detail tonight, as many individuals had expressed a
desire to remain in Fred's parking lot and continue to
assist the good folks of Waveland beyond the date
agreed upon. However, with numbers declining
(800-1200 meals/day) and the community showing signs
of recovery, the New Waveland Cafe will completely
disappear--every tent, box, tennis shoe, pot, pan, and
burner--by December 1, as agreed upon with the Hancock
County EOC back in September.
After a huge Thanksgiving Day Feast followed by a
parade the next day, that is. It's a difficult time
here at the New Waveland Cafe. We've formed a Family
and made some really good friends here in Waveland.
The cultural landscape will never be the same and
neither will the people who served the good folks of
Waveland.
In the meantime, the New Waveland Cafe will continue
to serve the best hot free meals on the MS Coast, give
dance lessons, entertain the masses, provide a
community center, and treat many many patients at the
New Waveland General Clinic.
Stone has informed me that we have an immediate need
for doctors and nurses at the Clinic. After Saturday,
no doctor has made a committment to be in the clinic,
which is treating 50-100 patients every day. So if
you are a doctor or nurse, or if you know of any
doctors or nurses who can come volunteer for any
amount of time, please contact Stone at 773-407-0254.
Following the next three weeks and cleanup, many
volunteers plan to either plug into continuing efforts
to help Waveland recover or move on to the new focus
of great need: New Orleans. As shelters close and
FEMA stops paying for apartments in other places, a
wave of New Orleans residents has begun to flock into
the city. Many of these people have lost
everything...homes, cars, family members. Their homes
are uninhabitable and there's nowhere for them to go.
And to continue the perfect storm, winter's close at
hand. Outside the Potemkin Villages of the French
Quarter and downtown, no one has basic services like
water, sewer, and electric, whether their homes are
destroyed or not.
I cannot stress enough the scale of the humanitarian
crisis blooming in NOLA. The situation is compounded
by a complete breakdown in civil authority as the
mayor was forced to lay off most city workers. The
resulting power vaccuum has left an environment rife
with corruption and chaos that threatens to explode.
It also creates a unique opportunity for everyone to
work together; not to build a cross between Disney and
Las Vegas (as envisioned by some seriously misguided
individuals), but to re-build communities that work
for everyone because everyone has a stake. We can
help everyone to work together by providing a
community space where communities can pull themselves
back together, share food with one another, and help
each other recover.
Now for the Good News. Welcome Home Cafe continues to
grow, serving the local community, the blossoming
activist community, workers and volunteers. Now
Diamond Dave has shown up in NOLA and seems to be
setting up a kitchen in the Upper 9th Ward. (More on
this when I have it). The call has gone out for more
Rainbow style free kitchens and volunteers for New
Orleans.
As the New Waveland Cafe breaks down, more and more
resources have been made available for folks in NOLA.
Some of our volunteers have been delivering overflow
goods to the Welcome Home Cafe, Common Grounds, Mama
D, and other grassroots efforts helping New Orleans
recover. We're also offering the last three weeks of
the New Waveland Cafe as a training center to educate
volunteers and others on how to create small,
community-based kitchens to serve residents,
volunteers, and workers in stricken areas.
One result of breaking down will be the sudden
dispersal of our volunteers. Many of us--especially
those who will have been here for three months at
dearture--will return to our homes and need to pick up
the pieces of our existence pre-Katrina. There are
long overdue bills to pay. Travel expenses. Many
everyday costs that were covered in Waveland.
Vehicles used in service to the Cafe that need repair.
Personally, I'd like to see these folks (and I'm one
of them) not go home hobbled.
Also, when we break down, a lot of materials, gear,
and people will move to New Orleans and other places.
The quantity is staggering and will require resources
we do not currently possess. The job ahead is a huge
one. Many obstacles still remain, including goverment
gridlock and many competing forces that must be
appeased or circumvented. And it's gonna cost money.
Most folks want to believe that Katrina recovery is
over. It's not in the news so it's not happening.
But it is far from over and if we've learned anything,
we've learned not to count on the government or the
huge operations to handle it. The crisis is simply
too large and the potential for large populations to
slip between the cracks too great. It's time to dig
deep. For all of us.
The donation pages are at www.REMARelief.org.
Everyone down here appreciates your generosity.
One final note: I spoke with Barry Sacharow last
Friday and he informed me that a community kitchen
would have been useful for the first three days after
Wilma sucker punched the southeast Florida coast. But
things were slowly getting back to normal, power
restored to many residents, and many businesses were
back up and running by last weekend. Barry spent
Wilma's aftermath serving in a FEMA Pod handing out
MREs, water, and ice.

Volunteers, Materials No Longer Needed
Some Volunteers Seeking New Location Elsewhere
We Need Help to Get Outta Here
Greetings!
As things begin to wind down here in Waveland, we are
happy to announce that the New Waveland Cafe is no
longer in need of more volunteers or materials. We
wish to thank you all for your generosity with your
time, prayers and donations. We really made a
difference here on the Mississippi Coast and we
continually remind folks here that we're only the face
on a much larger effort.
The New Waveland Cafe will serve its last meal on
Thanksgiving, followed by a day of rest, then a Party
complete with Parade on Saturday, November 27, down
Hwy 90 through the middle of Waveland. By December 1,
we expect to leave an empty parking lot and lots of
good memories in the Fred's parking lot.
Many of our volunteers are currently seeking a
different venue where hurricane survivors still
require services. Some have formed a new non-profit
organization called Emergency Communities to carry on
the work we started here in Waveland, serving people
in a good way in cooperation with anyone who will work
with us regardless of political or religious views or
affiliation. We'll pass on the information as it
becomes available.
Others are heading for home after what will be nearly
three months to pick up where we left off back in
September. I'm trying to address some special needs
for volunteers who have donated all their energy for
the past couple of months. Perhaps folks out there
could help. (Note: No one asked me to do this. I
just hope we can find these things).
Theodora and Leviticus arrived a few days after the
New Waveland Cafe opened, on foot because their van
blew up on the way under the strain of the supplies
they were hauling. (The supplies made it, btw). They
have become the heart and soul of the kitchen
operation in that time. It would only be appropriate
if they drove away from Waveland in their own van.
If you have a van within 1000 miles of here (and/or
that you will deliver) with a clean title that runs
well to donate, please contact me. To make a cash
donation to the van effort, just use our donation
page, http://www.welcomehome.org/REMA//?q=node/26 (http://www.welcomehome.org/REMA//?q=node/26), and
note that you are donating to the van effort.
Anne, who many of you know from Camp 44/Everybody's,
etc., Kitchen, arrived eight weeks ago hasn't stopped
working in the kitchen since. While making a produce
run to the farmer's market in Jackson, her
transmission died on her Suburban. The estimate is
$2000, which is more than we have in the bank right
now. To make a cash donation to the transmission
effort, just use our donation page,
http://www.welcomehome.org/REMA//?q=node/26 (http://www.welcomehome.org/REMA//?q=node/26), and note
that you are donating to the transmission effort.
Additionally, we need to provide travel expenses for
25-30 volunteers who, due to their service, have no
means to pay for their transportation out of here. We
hope to be able to help them along their way.
This would be a good time for folks in undestroyed
places to hold fundraisers in order to help us with
these needs.
Stay tuned.

Glad I got to be a part of it all, since going down the first time in September,
and the tours of duty that followed, the cafe has grown amazingly.
I met so many new brothers and sisters, had about 8 come to my house

I love what the cafe is, and i am sad that yesterday was my last time to see

We also made the front page of the LA Times today.
The Associated Press paid us a visit this past week.? Here are a couple
of versions of that story:
That Chicago Tribune article was also on the front page last
Wednesday.? Apparently, this story has gone to the newswire and was
published in several other papers, including one in Taiwan:
MSNBC was here again, so keep your eyes on them.? We've been kind of
inundated by reporters recently.? It's a little weird.

New Waveland Cafe
here's more:
One last installment of the Media Blitz, this one
compliments of MSNBC.? Check out the "Quote of the Day."? And by way of
clarification, I will be cooking the Veggie Turkeys today.
************************************************** *********************************
Greetings from Waveland!? There is so much to be grateful about today.?
Let me count just a few of the blessings that allowed the New Waveland
Cafe and Market to happen with such beauty:
Organic Valley, who provided us with regular shipments of organic
produce, milk, cheese, butter, and other good stuff we were able to
serve to the good people of Waveland.? In addition to helping exhausted
crew with R & R in Florida, they contributed one of their old fleet
vans to Levitikus and Theodora.? That's all, of course, on top of them
sending Clovis down here in the first place!? Oh, yeah, and 173
homemade pies.? OV just freakin' rocks!
All those groovy church folks from the Bastrop group, especially Jim
(actually from TN), Pete, Fay, Steve, and Shaun, not to mention a cast
of thousands of Texans and others we know contributed to the success of
the New Waveland Cafe and Market.? Let's start with The Big Miraculous
Generator That Changed Everything, the red and white tent covering the
kitchen that shows up in all the pictures, the innovative sink setup
that encompasses the soapy seas sailed upon by our merry dish pirates
in our dish pit, lots of other sundry equipment.? But we'd be no less
thankful for our neighbors if they had brought nothing.? Their
committment to and faith in the Cafe and crew, regardless of how weird,
never wavered.? We have made new friends for life.
Youth Initiative High School in Viroqua, WI, for sending us many
wonderful teenagers to cook us breakfast every day.? They taught us a
thing or two about hard work and our own process.? We also love them
all very much!
Sanderson Farms, for leaving a reefer truck full of chicken and ice for
the past six weeks.
The Generosity of the American People, without which, we would not have
experienced such bounty.
The Hancock County EOC and especially Mike Sweeney, who was able to fit
this round peg into a square hole.
FEMA, who ultimately pays for all of this (out of your pocket, I would
add) and the Red Cross, who made sure we never ran out of cutlery and
saved us a couple of times in our early days.
Everyone who kept us in their prayers, sent us donations of food,
stuff, cash, whatever.
All of the magnificent people who put their lives on hold, volunteered,
and made this place so special.? Specfically:
*Hydration station masters Jules, Raymond, and Ivan
*Rampaging trash haulers and table washers Floppy and BW
*The crazy looking guy who makes sure the handwashing stations stay
full of water, soap, and towels--the Next President of the United
States of America--Vermin Supreme
*Our sailors on the soapy seas (too many to name, but Dirty Momma,
Jason,? and Marissa immediately come to mind)
*Levitikus and Chicken the Kid, who will serve no pork before it is
smoked (and ARRRRRRed over repeatedly)?
*Amber, for all she is becoming here, including cook, accountant,
shanti sena, and BANG BANG, nifty slogan maker
*Stone, for running a first-rate clinic with excellent and professional
staff that treats up to a hundred patients every day while somehow
still having the time to watch Star Trek and MASH in my Bus all day
*Ann and Clovis for continuing to wake up every day at 5:30am to make
breakfast, even though they are both obviously completely burned out
*Mysha, who still has time to look at his neighbor's paper with his
busy schedule (oh, yeah...doesn't he also run supply?? Yeah, him and
Goat).
*All those folks giving massages all day every day, especially Rainbow
Robin and Brighid, who plug in in so many ways
*Gene, who will find you whatever you need and bring it to you
*Then there's the Best Cooks in Southern Mississippi, most notably
Jessica, Kiki, Lali, Theo, Shaney, Grace, Valesa, Flowers and I'm sorry
if I forgot anyone.? We're extra thankful for everyone who cooks!
*All the hundreds of folks who stand on the serving line day after day
with those smiling faces.? Becky is especially cute on her step up and
never misses a meal.? Alice has religiously kept track of our numbers
and anchored the line for weeks.
*And last but not least, me compadre, the man who made the first call
to The Dread and the second call to your humble narrator thereby
setting these deeds into motion.? He's a dance instructor from
Berkeley, CA, Master of Ceremonies at the Granola Funk, the Doctor of
Dance himself, Aaron Funk.? I had no idea someone could be so
versatile.? Security, Banking, Japanese chef, government liason, parade
plannin', float buildin', quote machine who teaches folks how to move
thier asses.
9.? The Good People of Waveland, who are the bravest people I've ever
met.? I'm so inspired by them all.
10.? And finally, We Thank Our Creator (or Random Chance for our
atheist friends out there), who, indeed, works in mysterious ways.
It's a time for celebration here in Waveland.? Thanksgiving for two
days followed by the Thanks for Giving Parade on Saturday.? Then it all
disappears.? I miss everyone already.
Gobble Gobble!

I wouldn't want to go into New Orleans at all right now. Some of the people are SHOOTING at rescuers trying to help them. It's getting out of control there.
hey scarlett,
just wanted to point out that on democracy now! the people in new orleans clarified that the people who were shooting were not shooting AT the rescuers, they were firing shots into the air to let them know where they were. it seems like just another way the media has distorted what is going on. good lovin irie precious

we also just got this email from a brother who is in New Orleans.... was working with a kitchen type set up but now...
"Just a short note to keep you up to speed with events here in the Big Easy. I have relocated to downtown to a huge warehouse that used to be an arts cooperative and was destroyed by Katrina. Common Ground which is one of the many relief groups here is restoring the building and it will eventually become a learninging center for ecoloigy related things like permaculture, photoelectric development, solar heat and power and things like that."
so many newer options opening up now for folks other than the basic necessities of life,,,,, not all are cut out for the kitchen n basic life needed stuff immediately after a disaster.... n have chose not to go .... with things finally settling down a bit all sorts of neat n new opportunities are there,,,, we encourage anyone we can to head down that way... ..we just rearrange how we operate round here when we have noone here helpin out.... we aint gonna starve n hell fence posts can go another year, etc etc.... ;)(we couldnt n cant go so tis the only way we can do our lil part in it all..)

Hi Everyone , I read bits & pieces of this thread & I just wanted to say Thanks for all that you are trying to do.
My family & I were living in Biloxi when Katrina hit & like so many others, we lost everything. We relocated & Austin has been great for us , we've started over & have started to rebuild our lives w/ the help of great people like you.
I wanna leave a link of photos from The Mississippi , Gulf Coast....New Orleans is in great need for help , but please don't forget everyone who needs your help in those areas also. From talking to people , I've realized that b/c of the media , not as many people realize how devistated Mississippi is from Katrina.

I, too, just ended a hitch with Emergency Communities. Anyone thinking of heading there expecting to find a "cool Family scene" is likely to be disapointed. Don't think about showing up there unless you know someome there that is expecting you, or have made arrangements with the E.C. HighHolies. Feel Free to PM or Email me for more details.

:) I am a New Orleans resident and I would like to express my appreciation to the Rainbow Family and all of the volunteers who came to the city in the aftermath of Katrina. Fortunately in live in the French Quarter, so my home did not suffer any damage as a result of the storm. I stayed throughout the hurricane and its aftermath. This gave me the opportunity to see the best and worst aspects of human behavior. The Rainbow Family provided much needed assistance despite encountering all sorts of obstacles. The park where the camp was established is located in the Marigny, just outside of the Quarter. These wonderful volunteers provided assistance despite being fought by Marigny residents, police and local politicans. Thanks for all of your help. YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Peace, Love and Happiness to all.

i've been wanting to go to New Orleans for a while now and have been looking online at organizations that take in volunteers to help out.
is there still any Rainbow camps(???) in the area i could help work with? i'd rather be helping with the Rainbow community than anyone else. it's not an attitude thing, just a preferance.

oh my god...reading this thread gave me chills and i had to stop and cry. i live in laurel, ms, in jones county, the hardest-hit inland county during the storm. you guys don't know what it was like. you have no idea how terrible it was unless you lived through it. it was awful! we were scared to death! there was absolutely no power or water of any kind...almost all the occupants of the local nursing homes died! they didn't have anything to drink AT ALL so they dehydrated. babies were dying as well. we had no way of communicating with anyone and since there were trees down on all the roads for months afterwards and there was no way to go offroad in most places, we didn't know if our families were okay. i spent a week wondering where the hell my boyfriend was, crying over him and dehydrating myself. his house was empty when i was finally able to get there. but you couldn't drive that many places becasue gas was either a ten-hour wait or completely gone OR inaccesible due to the lack of electricity. the work crews who attempted to fix the power and phone lines passed out because they'd had nothing to drink in days. some weren't willing to share anything because without police or any means of communciation other than face-to-face, crime was rampant. there were murders everywhere, and theft of food and stuff. i think some girls were raped. someone in my community shot their brother in a fight over a bag of ice. there were guns everywhere, either because people were taking advantage of the anarchy and shooting their neighbors, or people were afraid of just that happening and trying to defend themselves.
the worst part had to be not knowing who existed, or what was going to happen next, and knowing that noone knew or cared where you were or what was happeningto you. but a few people got out and helped. if it weren't for the crazy rednecks who live here, we wouldn't have made it. they had all been waiting for just such an opportunity to present itself. out came the huge chainsaws and the four wheel drives! they really did do a great job clearing the most important roads so that FINALLY, we could wait in line for ice and water.
sorry i got off on such a huge thing here, but it really was awful. thanks for letting me vent and share my story.

hey there family...i have to admit i haven't read through all of the posts on this thread. i'm gonna go ahead and repost this message for the American Rainbow Rapid Response...
"AMERICAN RAINBOW RAPID RESPONSE po box 1648 Asheville, NC 28802 (828)-582-2826 a project of Conscious Alliance Where were you on August 29th, 2005 at 7a.m. when Hurricane Katrina struck? On that fateful day, one of the worst disasters in modern American history came with a wake-up call and a test of our metal. In the days that followed, our nation watched in horror as hundreds of thousands of neighbors and friends fell deeper and deeper into despair. No food, no water, no doctors; all resulting in more deaths and life long psychological damage. WE SAY NEVER AGAIN! While watching the news coverage of the national response falling short, we realized that it is our responsibility and obligation as Americans to help our fellow citizens. This disaster and the short-fallings of national response led to the mobilization of the experienced knowledge and assets of the Rainbow community, as well as the collectives of Burning Man, church communities, and crucial donations of amazing non-profits like The Conscious Alliance. As it turns out, a “No Politics/No Religions” egalitarian model proved to be one of the most effective approaches to responding to this complex and unprecedented event; and inspired what has become the New Waveland Café movement. In the wake of these events, together with The Conscious Alliance, we have established the project American Rainbow Rapid Response (ARRR) to spearhead this movement. By providing critical support needed in the days immediately following a disaster, we believe that it is our duty as Americans and as Conscious human beings to motivate our community and assets to aid those suffering. It is our intent to motivate the youth and alternative grassroots networks towards compassion, caring and service in dire times of need. Please join us and let us embark on this journey together, by either donating money which will be put directly towards developing our vital infrastructure, partnering with our group in services, or by volunteering your time in the days immediately following a catastrophe. ……………let survivors know that, indeed, there is “Help on the Way”! Thank You, Aaron Funk Please send your donations to: Conscious Alliance disaster relief team 2525 Arapahoe ave. Ste. E4-182 Boulder, Co 80302 (303)810-2247 We are a 501(c)tax deductable non-profit"
this is just another group of kids doing what they can to help get folks fed and on the road to recovery. this is what we are all about...sharing the love and light...helping where it's needed.
loving you family! keep up the good work!

WHEN did they arrive in waveland? and i asked because yeah, it does take a long time to go through a million posts. i went through a lot and saw exactly what i expected to see-posts that said stuff like "yeah, everyone who goes down there is great for helping out...i wish i could but (insert excuse)."
i also think it's hilarious that people were talking about driving down here...as if we wouldn't have driven north if it were at all possible. my family and several others saved up enough gas before the hurricane that we could've gone other places for what we needed. we wanted very badly to get to tennessee afterwards but couldn't because of the ungodly number of massive fucking TREES down on every road.
good for the family to go to waveland, but they were needed everywhere else, too, and unless you lived through this storm, you'll never understand the hopelessness of the situation. very few people cared, and those few who did didn't understand how serious it was or how soon they were needed.
where do you live? and where were you when my uncle had to break his windows with a baseball bat to drain his living room? where were you when my mom forced her way into a drug store to steal insulin for my grandfather? don't criticize my criticizms unless you can say "yes, i had no water or electricity or communication with the outside world for three weeks."

I feel for ya Sister!!! I begged these
such a fine group of folks.
For help when we in florida were hit by 2 hurricanes. No reply.
But then they ran to "The Villages" (Outside Ocala) last Jan to help the ONLY 7 people who were injured from a tornando.....just to lie/cheat/steal supplies (tents/MRE's/Water) from the ones giving true help.
The Rainbow Medicine Man knows (and the Man) what is in store for the Mississippi and will not rebuild (quite obvious).
These Folks dont know Nothing about Katrina....It hit Florida 1st, Louisiana and then MS. Just reviewed the WHOLE tape I just found of the Announcement to leave NOLA at 9:30am by Gov Ray and they EARLY disaster $$$ figure speculation that was way off.

What my family did when this disaster happened was donated $2000 dollars to the fund, helping rebuild the communtiy and whatnot. This is a devastating thing and these people do need as much help as they can get, question is would they appreciate a bunch of hippies, though we would go with love in our hearts intent on helping them... would they want a bunch of rainbows there? I read a article in the post 'bout a week ago that mentioned their disliking to how many folks had migrated there after the hurricane...it said quite abit about overpopulation of people (mostly volunteers) in a destroyed area, of aggitated familys who just wanted to start over. I'm just saying... though I most likely rambling and ranting off of track here... do these folks really need any more volunteers? I think what they need is donations and the support from all over america.. we do not have to go there to help, hell to make a donation you wouldn't have to leave the spot your sitting in.... alright 'nough of my ranting, Hope I properly proved the point I was trying to prove without agitating any of you.

we opened our home to refugees of katrina.
, we sent a few hundred bucks down there(what we could afford)and sent at least 5 volunteers that way(people who otherwise wouldnt have known what was goin on with family down there)..
positive vibe folks we aint.. we did what we could.
where was i? i was here in the north georgia mountains.. weve dealt with hardships here as well maybe not on as grand a scale but hardships all the same. in 93 when the blizzard hit(im sure you have never even heard of the blizzard of 93 being you were 4,an if you have im sure you cant relate to what we went thru.). we were snow bound for a week the devastation was wide spread, the trees and infrastructure of the south could not handle nearly 3 feet of wet snow driven by up to 120 mile a hour winds. damage was estimated at up to 6 billion dollars.we were without power for 2weeks. so wow we were a week short of your 3 weeks without but we dealt with it..
you have no reason to act like such a fuckin bitch and lash out at someone you know nothing about..
you make generalizations and then assume your correct and attack me??
your just a poor misguided child ...
on the flip side, many of the katrina refugees we met were just scumbag pieces of shit with a entitlement mentality demanding that they be special because they were affected.
much like your acting now.
its bullshit in my opinion that people like you want to be put on a pedestal and be treated differently than anyone else..
as far as yalls experience in the storm, you had warning you could have left you chose your hardship..
and now you want to lash out at me because your family was to stupid to heed the warnings?? spare me please child....
perhaps you should lash out at your family for not heeding the warnings and getting you out of harms way..
and dont give me no bullshit about we had nowhere to go or no way to get there blah blah..
yall could have started walking 24 hours in advance(the storm was in the gulf after florida for nearly 3 days.ample time to take action.) and been long gone by the time it hit..people would have helped you get out even if you were disabled or without transportation...
and dont say they wouldnt have, cause if they wouldnt have then they are the real ones to lash out at.. the people in your community who wouldnt even help there neighbors.
your family chose to stay and now your special..
complete and utter bullshit the way your acting..
just wondering,, what did your family do to help the tsunami victims??
i mean since your so caught up in activism when a disaster strikes, i bet yall organized food and fund drives volunteered time to load trucks ,,all sorts of things huh??

what the hell is wrong with you?! yeah, the scumbag pieces of shit were many. they were a problem. they did much to hold up progress. they're the reason everyone was afraid.
you didn't watch the news in laurel, ms. this is where evacuees came. the storm wasn't supposed to be that bad. it was a total shock to everyone. people thought jones county would just have some messy yards and maybe be without power for a day or two. no shortages or roads really impassible or anything.
you don't know anything about my family or the false impressions my community labored under.
your few bucks at the grocery store? hahaha! well aren't you mother theresa!
i don't believe i ever acted entitled to anything. i simply made some criticisms, which is what a free speech forum is supposed to allow me an outlet for.
you didn't do enough to act like the expert you act like. i don't say anything about blizzards because i've never lived through one, and i don't act like a saint just because i sent a few bucks to the tsunami victims. (like you did for the katrina situation) i'd be embarrassed to brag about it as you have. i know that you have nothing to brag about until you've risked your life by moving corpses around an area infested with scumbag pieces of shit. so please take your self-righteous bullshit somewhere else. why not go jump up a tsunami victim's ass?

Just a couple of things here; first sunnycynic, you seem like you expected Rainbows to come fix all the things that the US government wasn't taking care of. The Rainbow folks who showed up in Waveland & New Orleans gave of their own personal time, energy & sometimes health, to help folks, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Folks who did not physically go to help folks, helped by sending money and loving support to the relief kitchens & some hosted evacuees. Do you really think that any person in the chain is any less important than another? All the links in a chain must be strong or the chain will break...simple physics kiddo. Instead of bitching at folks who did care, maybe you should be elsewhere bitching at those who did not care...like the people who scammed services by claiming to be evacuees when they weren't...or how about the Red Cross who spends a ton of donations on their paper pushers. Did the Red Cross or FEMA show up to help your family? How long did it take for them to get there? I know that after Rita, the FEMA people were keeping charitable organizations for going in to hurricane ravaged areas. Please do not demonize those who did their best, no one volunteered just to meet your standards on disaster relief.
Second, this whole can't criticize your criticizims unless you can say "yes, i had no water or electricity or communication with the outside world for three weeks." thing...wow we lived for a whole month every summer with no water, no electricity & no communication with the outside world...of course we did so voluntarily but there are a great many people in the world who live like that all the time & not by choice. I live in US & we have a lot more resources here than we tend to appreciate. I know how to get water out of our well if the electric goes out, we have plenty of candles & we always have enough food in the pantry to hold us over for a couple of months if needed. Sometimes it's a matter of being prepared to take care of your own if you have to.
I'll tell ya, I don't count on anyone to help my family if the shit hits the fan is whatever way; fires, hurricanes, blizzards, economic collapse or whatever; but if I can help others in the face of disaster I will. That should be enough for anyone to expect from anyone else.

first of all, it was my UNCLE who broke the sliding glass doors. second of all, we had problems with flood here, too. a pine tree tore through the roof so the heavy ass rain flooded the living room. anywhere there's rain, there can be flooding. it's really quite simple. when it got knee-deep, he took my cousin's baseball bat and broke the glass so it would go out of the house.
perhaps my first message, the one that started all the bickering, sounded a little sarcastic or critical. well, please understand the frustration that i still carry with me to this day. what little attention was paid to katrina went to new orleans, then the coast, respectively. everyone was talking about the great response...well..what little help we got came from the national guard. it's sad when the government is your only help. it's just that everyone was raving about the family's response, and i never even heard about them helping anyone.
you shouldn't have been unkind to me to begin with. maybe my post sounded a little rude, but it didn't warrant the response you gave. you know, saying "i know that would require effort." you don't know anything about me, and you knew even less at that point. but you tried to provoke me. my fault for falling for it.
i'm sorry for any toes i may have stepped on. i shouldn't have passed judgement on anyone. you guys were doing more than the average citizen for even knowing what was going on.
please understand though, that it was a SUCK situation and that i still need to get rid of a lot of anger and hurt. sometimes, i'm going to direct it at the wrong people.
please understand also, that living without power, water, etc. by choice is very different than when it's forced upon you. when you make the decision, you're more prepared. you have a well, you've adjusted to everything, etc. you know that if someone falls deathly ill, you'll have a hospital filled with modern conveniences and that it will be safe and sanitary. if you should need power, you can go somewhere that has it. everywhere near us that had these things was blocked by huge trees. please try to understand where i'm coming from.
a million apologies,
SARA

sister sara...i'm so sorry for your families hard times....struggling to survive it's not something i would wish on anybody. you have every right to be angry and that is a hard bitter pill to swallow when you see so many folks uninformed about the true depth of this tragedy. i wish i could think of something to say here that would make a difference...but all i have to offer is my love.
i hope the path is getting clearer for you and your family.

I was out there in August. My coisin and travel partner got all cracked out. I could not find any volunteer orgs in the few days we was there. Churches would not let us help out with out a "wait period". I had to high tale it back to indiana before my coisin killed himself from all the crack available. He spent all our cash. I got allot of bad vibes in New Orleans but did not visit any other townes or Parish/city.

I feel for ya Sister!!! I begged these
For help when we in florida were hit by 2 hurricanes.

People were demanding stuff from the government like they should be served meals hours after it happened.
What the hell a flood happens and they bitch and whine about not having dinner at 6:00.
But it was a disaster people need help OK.
Then weeks and months go by and they are still playing the “I’m a Katrina victim”.
Well in America there is thousands of homeless people and people who lose everything everyday so what makes you special? Your disaster got media attention? “You’re a Katrina victim” how awful you need a huge house and monthly money forever.
People saying “where is the Rainbow help”?
Probably already helping their families and local disasters, you want everyone to cut off their local homeless shelters, clinics, help lines and come help “Katrina victims”?
You guys aren’t the only “victims” in life. And whom have you helped in a time of disaster?
Go to the homeless shelter those people are all in disasters without billions of dollars of help.
What ever it is over along time ago, time to play another card. Go smoke some crack.

^I volunteer at the local homeless shelter.
A lot of our funds are from donations and they went to an all time low after hurricane Katrina. Even after it was months over and Katrina victims were spending vouchers on DVD players and stereos taking them down the street to the pawnshops people were still sending money to their funds instead of local ones.
People will drive by someone freezing and going hungry, lock the car door sneer at them and tell them to get a job. But then go home and send money to some family in an apartment watching TV because they were a “Katrina victim”.
When we get less funds at the shelter that means in the dead of winter when we can’t house everyone people go without sleeping bags, boot, coats, basic survival gear that literally can mean life or death.
The only point I am trying to make is everyday people lose everything and need help not just people in the media.
So people should not forget about their own community and the people that are living a personal disaster in it.
Katrina “victims” had way more help then the average victim of disaster so it makes me made to hear them complain about not receiving enough.

i can understand the frustration other charitable organizations had to deal with due to Katrina and Rita and people donating funds to the cause of helping the surivivors. many Rita survivors recieved no help because of everything being about Katrina. i must inform you that the impression you give in your post indicates it was all fixed and over with a few months after the storm, is far from accurate. we're still down here working on the mess. it'll be another couple of years before it will be close to what it was before. be thankful there are shelters for you to volunteer in. there aren't many shelters here. down here it's all about stepping on the little guy. we have a much larger homeless population now and the powers that be just keep working on getting them to leave, instead of trying to fix the problem. it's people like you and i and thousands of others who try our best to take up the slack. it gets insanely frustrating and overwhelming at times. the best we can do is support each other and hope that in the end we get the job done. i will say that you are right on about people stepping over those in need in their faces to help others far away is just sad.

so i guess EVERYONE was doing what certain residents of new orleans did? i agree their behavior was horrible. many people from mississippi, alabama, and the rest of louisiana got no money because they sucked the system dry. people who owned no property got hundreds while my neighbors still have tarps on their roofs.
but that's beside the point. i never asked for government money, or complained about not receiving any. i just criticized the things i was hearing about the rainbow family, and douchebags like you for pretending you were there. i've not tried to play the victim, only explain why i hold the views i do and feel as frustrated as i sometimes do. not sure, but i love those things. i've only seen them on t.v. my dad patched our roof so that it doesn't leak anymore, but i wish i could hook some of my neighbors up. what's really sad is that a lot of them didn't get fema trailers when they desperately needed them. i think the little green buildings would be far superior what some people have now.

there's probably no more danger in living for a LITTLE WHILE in a fema trailer than there is in living in a heavily polluted city or eating a steady diet of the government-approved meats and produce that most americans do. i meant that the little green homes would've been the perfect solution, but that if people needed a roof over their heads and a door that would lock, why not give them the trailers they were promised?
