my dad did some stupid things in his life, he's evil and bitter now, he used to be coolish, but I don't think I would have personally liked him even at his best.....
my grandfather is just about the same story, he just wrote down his interesting stuff, I need to transcribe it......

i asked him about when he was younger & heres what he said;
When i was real young about three & four my family was real rich. Then the war came & my mom got sick & my dad started drinking more. (His dad was an abusive drunk) Soon we became poor. Around thirteen & fourteen when i was able to i would leave for months @ a time. At fourteen i finally decided i had to go. I took a train to ____________ (someplace in germany, where he lived) & signed up to become a seaman. In about two or so days i traveled to ____________ (somewhere in eaurope) & got a job on a german ship. We traveled for six months to different places & finally we docked up in London (or England i can't remember) It was real early so i packed my bag & got up before the captain got up so that i could travel to the german consult. When i got there i told them my story. I had taken a job on a german ship where the captain had payed very little for mass work & had beat me with a fire poker for not knowing how to cook. (You gotta remember this is after the war & most people are half insane or really really old) So then the consult men drove me back to the ship & we talked with the captain & crew. The crew that had seen the acts of cruelty inflicted upon me was to scared to speak up. So the ship had to go to belguim & as i go & get my bag they let the consult men onto land & try to take off. When i got to the deck i was so scared the captain would kill me. I threw my pack onto the dock & jumped after it. The dock was only a few feet away. After that the consult men gave me a room to stay in for a few nights as i waited for a ship back to germany. The ship they got was good. Good food. Nice people. Good pay. So i went back to germany & visited my mother ( My dad was an only child) & she convinced me to take a job selling tv's. So i stayed for a few months. But as a child i was real ansy so i took off again on a swedish ship. From there i sailed & traveled all over the world, swearing never to sail a german ship again. I traveled everywhere, United states, asia, philipinnes, south america, north america, canada, Africa, Iraq, EVERYWHERE. I also took seamans jobs, painting boats, scuba diving, fishing, etc. Then since id read alot about the US & thought it was "the land of opportunity" i moved there as an immigrant & stayed in brooklyn newyork. I only had 18 dollars & needed a job. Some guy had told me about an unemployment place so i paid 8 bucks to have them tell me a painting job i could do. So i worked @ that job while i waited to get my green card & become a US citizen. (17years old now)
I remember my old english teacher. She had a humpback & carried around a bamboo stick. She would make you say english words over & over & if you pronounced them wrong she would beat yer wrists with the bamboo stick.
& he did weird stuff when he traveled too. Like he trained with Maharishi Yogi to become a Yoga & meditation trainer, he lost two fingers in a diving accident & his boat was in Jurassic Park. He was in it :) :D phew that was alot to type
Jesus fucking christ, I hope you were being sarcastic because other then the fact that he got to travel a lot it sounds like your dad had a real shitty life up to 17.

you must have a really sheltered life
What? Having your family lose all of their money, your father turn into an abusive drunk, travelling on a ship for six months with a captain that beats you with a fire poker, getting your wrists beat with bamboo for not knowing how to pronounce words, and losing two fingers would all be cool if I didnt live a sheltered life? Well damn, I guess I need to get out more.

Heheh, my dad has an interesting history too. I'm sure he could write a book about it (and one of his old hobbies is writing, so he could pull it off), but typing it all out and remembering is a pain in the ass.
To put most of the key points together:
He rode a motorcycle, got in some wrecks, got in plenty of fights that he didnt start, got kicked out of catholic school for that, went back and graduated, got married and had kids, got sucked into Vietnam, came back to find his wife with some other guy, got a divorce and started raising his two daughters as a single father. About that time, he realized that he needed a career so he went to school to become an electrician. He got in the newspaper for wrestling a bear, got his schooling done, started working for General Motors in flint michigan as an electrician. 10-15 years later, he met my mom, got married and had me.
Yeah, now he's a conservative who works too much.

My Dad went into the Navy in 1037 because, as he said, he was too dumb to teach, too proud to preach, and too lazy to plow. He served in the US Navy for 32 years and was in WWII and Korea. His oldest son, my half brother was in the USMC and was killed in Korea. My Dad started out as a gunner but was wounded in WWII and could not lift heavy shells anymore. They offered him the choice between getting out and changing jobs, so he went to school and became a cook. He got several awards and decorations during his time in the military. The biggest one was for volunteering to sail on an oil tanker that had been hit with a 500 lbs bomb. They could not remove or disarm the bomb at sea so a small crew sailed it back to Pearl Harbor. He was a good men and I miss him a lot.
