Your 1st line of defense against bugs and deer too.
Some of the plants on the list deter bugs by themselves, others because they attract beneficial insects that will attack harmful bugs. Plant around your pot patch.
The best is garlic. Garlic is easy to grow and doesn't "take over". It repels both bugs AND deer and other critters. And it is easily grown inside.
Onions are also good.
Others that attract beneficials and repel pests:
-Anise
-Coriander
-Marigolds
-Dill
-Mint
-Wormwood
-Yarrow
Deer especially hate Russian sage.
And all of the above have other benefits too. Marigolds have attractive flowers, most of the others add fragrance and flavor to food that us humans like.
P.S. Garlic and onion aren't that great of an idea if you have a lot of bears in your area. Bears associate the smell of garlic and onions with tasty trash can treats. Bears don't eat pot but can damage plants by digging them up or knocking them over.
