Ymere buys and restores Anne Frank’s old apartment
Apartment to become refuge for fleeing writers
Amsterdam - December 16, 2004
Anne Frank’s old apartment on the Merwedeplein, where the Frank family lived from 1933 to July 1942, has been bought by the housing corporation Ymere. The new owner is going to completely restore the apartment to its original 30’s style on the basis of details supplied by the Anne Frank House. The apartment is intended as a refuge for foreign writers who are not able to work freely in their own countries.
The programme will be filled in by the Amsterdam Foundation for Cities of Refuge - the Stichting Amsterdam Vluchtstad. Once a year this foundation invites a 'fleeing writer' to live and work here for a period of time. In 1997, Amsterdam became part of the international network of Cities of Refuge set up by Salman Rushdie. Together with a representative from the Anne Frank House the Stichting Amsterdam Vluchtstad will form an allocation committee for the new occupants.

I think Anne would be proud.
