Supposedly we don't ever have to get a social security number. But has anyone tried to go to college or work or the military without ever having one?
If you are self-employed obviously your boss can't make ya fill out all those W-2 forms. But later you can't get disability if you need it.
I haven't filed taxes for 4 years now, even though I have worked all 4 of those years. I had children living with me and didn't earn huge amounts of money so if the government ever realized I wasn't filing and checked it out, then they would realize that they owe me money, so they probably wouldn't do anything about it.
