Silence in the dark trees
the cool breeze blows
the leaves tremble and the
clouds slither away from
the soft moonlight that
showers the sleeping pasture
you've fallen asleep watching
for shooting stars

Your eyes quiet and closed
with a child-like expression
the look of a child in deep, dreamless
sleep perfectly innocent
I take the cigarette still
burning from your fingers
and put it out just outside
the comfort of soft blankets

The night is fresh and in the
distance I hear a coyote cry
out to the night sky
the wind picks up dragging
dry leaves across the grass
I snuggle deeper under the
blankets I can feel your
body's seady rested breathing
it comforts me
and I start to relax

Lying here on my back
looking up into the endless
sky it's almost like I'm
falling... but backwards
maybe if I stare long enough
I will fall into
the stars and disappear
