Quanah Parker, Comanche and white, surrendered to the American military and was housed on Fort Sill (Lawton, Okla.)
As the movement for Indian citizenship grew, Quanah was offered citizenship on one condition: he could not keep his five wives.
"Quanah, you are going to have to tell four of them they are not really your wife," the post commander said.
Quanah, an extremely smart man with a large pragmatic streak, drew on his pipe, looked over to his five bedroom home, looked at the commander and said: "You tell 'em."
The family stayed together.
