Quanah Parker, Comanche and white, surrendered to the American military and was housed on Fort Sill (Lawton, Okla.)
As the movement for Indian citizenship grew, Quanah was offered citizenship on one condition: he could not keep his five wives.
"Quanah, you are going to have to tell four of them they are not really your wife," the post commander said.
Quanah, an extremely smart man with a large pragmatic streak, drew on his pipe, looked over to his five bedroom home, looked at the commander and said: "You tell 'em."
The family stayed together.

Hahaha, beautiful.

Personally, Indian, ancient Jew, LDS, whoever...I don't see why anyone would want more than one wife. From what I've seen, one is more than most men can handle. Besides, they'd never get along, what a friggin headache.

I think it comes down to sexual repression showing it's ugly face. I've heard a lot of bad shit about the Fundamentalist Mormons who still practice polygamy. Very young girls being married off to men with sometimes dozens of wives, old men basically raping the girls...just a lot of sick stuff.

Besides, they're all living off welfare, all the wives but the first. Bastards.

well, the other cultures were labor intensive and lots of kids= social security.
More wives meant more wealth and more kids to support you when you were older.
Remember, it was about society, not love or passion.
