Cannabis Leaf Marijuana Users Can Breathe Easier!

According to the latest study on the effects of marijuana on our lungs, cannabis is far safer than tobacco use. This 20-year study of 5,000 young people found NO lung damage to casual pot smokers compared with tobacco smokers. It appears there is something in the cannabis, most likely the dozens of cannabinoids that act as a protectant, preventing inflammation. This also bodes well for protecting against cancers which are widespread among tobacco smokers.

Quote:
On average, cigarette users smoked about 9 cigarettes daily, while average marijuana use was only a joint or two a few times a month – typical for U.S. marijuana users, Kertesz said.

The authors calculated the effects of tobacco and marijuana separately, both in people who used only one or the other, and in people who used both. They also considered other factors that could influence lung function, including air pollution in cities studied.

The analyses showed pot didn't appear to harm lung function, but cigarettes did. Cigarette smokers' test scores worsened steadily during the study. Smoking marijuana as often as one joint daily for seven years, or one joint weekly for 20 years was not linked with worse scores. Very few study participants smoked more often than that.

Some growers don't give a shit what they throw on their plants to save them from pests and mold. And many medical patients end up ingesting god knows what from those plants!

If only all growers were conscious of what they're doing to their customers...

That is not to say cannabis smoke does not do some damage though, as it is smoke after all. But as far as I can tell thats about the easiest/quickest way to ingest cannabis.

the easiest and quickest way to ingest cannabis is to make tea out of it. It is extremely potent! Plus there is NO damage to the lungs. That is what a lot of people do with shrooms too

the picture is a lot more complex than that. first off, tobacco in the cigarette is not pure tobacco, cannabis however is. cigarettes have hundreds of additives in them, none of which are being listed as ingredients on the pack. some of those additives are chemicals that increase the probability of cancerous transformation in the cell. then, cigarette smoke injures macrophages in the lungs, macrophages being the cells that kill bacteria and other harmful substances. the cilia are also harmed by cigarette smoke and smoke actually destroys lung alveoli, reducing them in number. this is all done, not by the tobacco plant, but by the chemical additives in commercial cigarettes. so it's simple to understand why cigarettes pose a greater health risk than weed.

there's one more angle to this thing though. one of the major defense mechanisms of the body against toxic chemicals is their molecular alteration--biotransformation. how this works is that the chemical is rendered more polar, i.e. less lipid-soluble. most importantly this facilitates the toxin's urinary and fecal excretion from the body. the problem with this, however, is that the liver enzymes that mediate the transformation instead of detoxifying substances, can actually toxify harmless substances. and this is the case with chemicals in cigarette smoke. in reality they are harmless to the body until the liver enzymes get their hands on them. the major component of cigarette smoke is transformed into a carcinogenic compound by the microsomal enzyme system (MES) of the liver that performs this function. the MES is not functioning at a constant rate. the number of enzymes in this system can be greatly increased by exposure to chemicals. in different individuals this increase occurs at a different rate. which at least partly explains why some people can smoke all their life and have no sign of cancer in their body while others smoke some and die of cancer. it has been found that individuals with a highly inducible MES (higher increase in enzymes) are 20-40 times more likely to get a lung cancer from smoking.

so there. the story is a lot more complex than that.

you can't make cannabis tea unless you're putting oil in your tea, which is gross.

the reason for this is that cigarette smoke immobilizes the cilia in your airways. the airways contain cilia (which in essence are motile hairlike extensions on the surfaces of some cells) that beat toward the mouth. bacteria, dust, and other particles contained in the air you breathe get stuck in the mucus which is moved by the cilia to the pharynx (toward your mouth) and is then swallowed. ciliary activity is inhibited by cigarette smoke which can immobilize the cilia for several hours, therefore the mucus and all the particulate matter stuck in it stay stuck in your airways. maybe this whole talk is boring to you, but the main point of the science behind it is-- there is no cure for this. nothing you can do will make this problem go away, except, stop smoking already.
