Cleaning the beach, 2012

So Thursday May 3rd started off this years beach cleaning efforts on the shores of Lake Erie. This will be my second year cleaning the plastic garbage from the beach at the end of my street. Its about a mile long stretch of beach, but the way the current goes most of the plastic in the lake gets washed up on this section of beach. Last year it was so bad I picked up over 60 bags of garbage, 15 tires or so , both dock and boat and car parts, and some industrial plastic pipes and stuff. This year on my first day I picked up 2 garbage bags full of plastic bits, 2 inner tubes, 2 tires, and what I think was the bed liner to a pickup truck, a 7 foot hunk of snow fence, and some PVC and sewer pipes. Will go back out maybe today or later in the week as my legs are still sore, very good work out picking up stuff for 3 or 4 hours. Anyway just wanted to have a record of the things I find, quantities and whatnot so this will be continuing through out the summer.

Well we had a interesting weekend on the beach for memorial day. The problems I encountered last week with the cops have been taken care of! The police were replaced with park workers that were told to leave my side of the beach pretty much alone. The guy who got rid of the cops stopped down on Saturday with the news, no more cops for the rest of the summer! He thanked me for my cleaning efforts and was really cool. Cleaned for about three and a half hours today a filled 2 of the big contractor type bags, well past the half way marker now. Its really nice to be this much further ahead, last year I was just starting this week and didnt finish till August.

Well I spent about 3 hours cleaning the beach today. Had a major set back over the weekend due to some stormy weather. Really sucks, pretty much had to start back at square one with thousands of little quarter size bits of plastic everywhere. Probably pushed progress back 2 weeks or so, kind of frustrating. Managed to pick up 2 bags worth of little plastic bits and dug up a tire and a really big conveyer belt left over from the steel plant days, major chunk of debris always makes me feel good. Found a frisbee and a really nice fishing lure though, looks like frisbee on the beach this weekend.

Dude! How awesome is what you are doing?!?!!!
Phenomenal thing you do!!!
I'd love to see some pics of your beach glass. I used to collect it on a river's banks but haven't been there in several years.

Hey thanks, word of encouragement are much appreciated. I will try to take some beach pics and include some of the nicer pieces of beach glass. One of these days when I figure out how, I have some of them on my email so now I just have to get the over here. Spent a few more hours out there again this afternoon and made some decent progress. Almost back to where I was last week, one or two more days and I will be caught up. Managed to pick up one decent, very heavy bag of general bits and pieces and a big hunk of carpet and some plastic piping. Cant wait till Saturday, chicken BBQ beach style!

Pretty cool that youre doing this. I would so come down to help out. Could you take some pics of the areas that youve cleaned? Reading that bit about the cop... Bloody useless..
Keep up the good job!
Peace.
