The Tao of Homelessness Entry 1: Score!!!
Score!!!
Went scavenging this weekend and found just about everything I had on my wish list. The kids here throw away unbelievably good and usable stuff every year after graduation from the university when a bunch of them move back home or on to the next place.
I found 3 decent sleeping bags, 2 tents (both in really good shape and just about the perfect size), and a few usable odds and ends.
Now I have enough gear to set up a cpl more camps. It's always a good idea to have more than one camp when you're living outside. That way if one camp gets raided (which happens sometimes) it's not a big deal: you just go to one of your other camps.
I already have one good camp all set up, another one that should be even better partially set up, and enough stuff where I can either set up 2 more, or just stash enough gear in a cpl of spots so I can set up there if I need to.
One of the biggest hassles with this lifestyle is either having everything you own in one place and always vaguely worrying about it, or having to carry it all with you all the time (which is worse IMO). This is the best way I know of getting around that.
Also kind of nice to know that, if you spread your camps out strategically, no matter where you wind up at the end of the day, home is always a short bike-ride away.
Oh yeah: I scored a full-suspension aluminum mt bike too. Needs a few cables and some work, but nothing I can't do with a pair of pliers, and a cpl of screw drivers.

There are others here living the same way. It can be done.
Americans are so wasteful!
