The mathematics show that the giant black hole at the center of our galaxy could be used to safely traverse the universe through a series of worm holes. However, before you get excited, that black hole is 70,000 light years away and would require a century to reach at warp 9. It would also require an exotic form of negative matter, not to be confused with anti-matter, and an outrageous amount of energy. A much better option would a Star Trek style warp drive to begin with, which NASA is currently working on. Such a warp drive can also be used to create Star Gates from one location to another. The one they are working on could reach Alpha Centuri in a couple of weeks.
Russians call black holes "dark stars", because black hole is pornographic in their language. NASA's first test of the technology was successful, but they are now working on using the insights gleaned to produce a first working prototype. After that, I assume they will eventually want to test a small engine in orbit, but the real problem with a warp drive engine is the power it requires, and this one will be used as more of a reactionless drive for the immediate future. From here to the moon in about four hours, maybe ten weeks to Mars, and six months to Jupiter. Future tech that likely won't be realized until after a Theory of Everything is discovered by next generation computers.
