A co-worker debated me about his friend , a 65 year old transgender military veteran who wants the taxpayers to pay for sex reassignment surgery and file a lawsuit.

In the discussion, we debated about this most recent short article of Nov '16:
The VA Just Dealt a Big Blow to Transgender Veterans
    http://m.motherjones.com/politics/2016/11/department-veterans-affairs-wont-offer-sex-change-surgeries

He stated that prisoners can get the surgery from taxpayers, but his friend can't. He showed me this short article of Jan '17:
California murder convict becomes first U.S. inmate to have state-funded sex reassignment surgery

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-inmate-sex-reassignment-20170106-story.html

During that discussion my opinion was people in our society have to pay for their own sex reassignment surgery, why should taxpayers have to pay for veterans and prisoners?

After a few days I felt like a hypocrite. I thought about my wife's three breast reconstruction surgeries after her double mastectomy with cancer. The costs were picked up by the insurance company. It was all because of The U.S. Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act, also known as Janet's Law, signed into law on October 21, 1998.

    https://www.cms.gov/CCIIO/Programs-and-Initiatives/Other-Insurance-Protections/whcra_factsheet.html

Now I'm not sure where my thoughts are on the OP. I know that my wife's reconstructions are slightly off topic and were covered through insurance but has to be considered in the topic because reconstruction is the possible cosmetic portion (male to female) (breast implants) of the OP as it is beneficial to the patients confidence and self esteem.

Insurance costs go up on all policy holders to compensate my wife's reconstruction just as it would for taxpayers to pay for sex reassignment.

Should we pay for sex reassignment for "everybody" (including veterans and prisoners) that suffers from gender dysphoria?

    Thank you for reading.

I can't help but wonder how many poor kids this taxpayer money would feed instead. It's an elective surgery, so I fail to see why the government should pay for it when insurance companies will not. I wonder how convicts are able to wrangle this as it is.

Who are you ridiculing here really? I suspect a minority of people who's overprotective mindsets get too many attention. Or are you attempting to make it appear that a lot of (left leaning) people actually really think like this?

    In short, no.

Gender "dysphoria" or "Gender Identity Disorder" as it was called before the PC version came in, is a very complex issue and a true disorder. 40% of transgenders commit suicide with the operation to change having little to no impact on that number (it doesn't help). I do not think that we should be celebrating and promoting what in 5 to 10 years will be seen as a mental issue. I don't say this in an offensive way, I just want these people to get the help and treatment they need instead of doing something that they might regret and stopping their identity issues before it ends in suicide.

no, I don't think it should be paid for... which prison will he or she be in? Are we going to create safe spaces for trangender in prisons? Will there be trans prisons for male and female transgender? Will people lie in order to be moved into a woman's prison or a mans one? How will this work? You commit a crime just so you can go to prison and get the surgery for free?

Here is an article about a transgender man in a woman's prison.
    http://metro.co.uk/2017/02/05/transgender-murderer-moved-from-womens-prison-after-having-sex-with-female-inmates-6429321/

And Pete, a mastectomy from cancer, which is necessary and reconstructive surgery are part of the process from an illness. Your wife did not choose to have her breasts removed.. it is an integral part of being a woman, Not the same for transgender imo. :)

A sex change is not life or death. It Won't prevent suicide.

the Canadian healthcare will pay for it, but won't pay for the surgery for men who have Phimosis. They call that cosmetic.

Also I know that quite a few ask for reversal after having it done,

I think it should be paid for. The decision to have reassignment surgery is a long process and one that has to be monitored by more than one health care professional. In order to be eligible you have to be approved by CAMH and even then it can take years for it to be possible. Last year in Ontario they approved 5 surgeries. They are currently working on changes to the standards of access and hopefully that will reduce wait times from what they are now which can be upwards of 5 years or more after having met the criteria.

Very few transgenders have reassignment surgery. The majority have hormonal treatment and live as the gender they wish to. Even then to have hormonal treatments involves a process again of medical and mental health professionals. No one walks in and starts the next day on treatments. There are safe guards in the system to ensure that they are prepared for the changes that happen not only physically but emotionally.

Phimosis is covered by OHIP. If it is because you do not wish to have a foreskin then it is considered an adult circumcision and is not covered, the same as infants. If there is a medical issue it is covered.

To me, this is a human rights issue. They should have the right and access to medical procedures and it should be covered under the provincial health plan.

How many reassignment surgeries are we talking about per year?

You know how much crap your government spends elsewhere on welfare?

In Ontario, 136 patients last year. Part of the issue is surgeons who are able to perform the surgery are very limited.

I made an error in my previous post, 2008 there were only 5 approved as the government had cut funding to this through OHIP. It has since been reinstated as a covered medical procedure. My apology.

    And this too. https://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2016/10/13/liberals-scramble-to-get-ehealth-appraised-before-ag-weighs-in.html

And this is how the government claims the tax payers money is spent.

Here you go asmo. We can't afford it... and with the liberals it is going to grow greatly. Shall I post a link to the number of immigrants living in poverty too?

    http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/immigrants-cost-23b-a-year-fraser-institute-report

They can live in poverty, collect welfare, never contribute to the system.... but hey, gender reassignment will be covered. :)
