Yeah, he's right. Unless you buy the extremely expensive stuff its all just the cheapest parts available that will do the trick slapped together these days by the Chinese or a bunch of people in a warehouse somewhere making them to order. Within five years most of this kind of crap will all be dinosaurs anyway. Fans and things like that are just there so they can speed them up a bit more and the need for them will slowly vanish over the next five or ten years for most home uses.

    It's one of four things:

    Drivers/Software, Monitor, Cable or GPU.

My first instinct would be the first because it's only happening on the lock screen. If it weren't for that, my first guess would be GPU and second would be monitor. Test all of those in isolation and you'll have your answer.

Try using a spare monitor. Try with a new cable, and try using a boot Linux USB. If the problem doesn't happen when you've taken those three factors into account, you'll need to get a new graphics card. $20 on ebay for your model.

I'd recommend upping the ram on that puppy too if you're going to save it. 1gb is not enough.

Do me a favor. windows key + r. type 'cmd.'

    enter 'systeminfo > sys.txt'

then open the sys.txt file you just created and post it here.

I always found laptops are too prone to get too slow. Like they already come pre loaded with shit I'll never use. I just want the bare NOTHING and internet access. None of this movie player shit I don't use.

That's why a desktop is good it just comes with windows and that's it. And it lasts forever and a laptop pfff battery goes quickly, memory goes quickly. System slows down, no discs or anything. If you reformat you lose whatever you didn't want on it in the first place.

I have a surface pro 3 and it's an utter disappointment.

When I get my gear together I'll be getting another desktop. :)

Not the graphic card...does it without the card installed.
    Don't have Linux.

Monitor is sitting here...but the problem has resolved it self for the time being....so I'm waiting to switch in the spare monitor and cable.

Can't get my system to recognize sys.txt

Glad the problem is resolved. You'll need to add .exe and remember the spaces.

    systeminfo.exe > systeminfo.txt

If it still doesn't work launch it as an admin and change directory.

    C:/Windows/System32

I just have to comment that it's a bitch getting old. I used to know all this shit back in the old days when we had to do everything by command line...now I can't find anything, especially with Win10.

I feel ya on that one.
I remember spending a day tweaking my autoexec and config.sys until I was able to load all the drivers and still have a whopping 630K of base memory available, all so I could play some game I'm sure...LOL

Just an update for those of you that have been helping.

System was working fine after I switched out the monitor cable.....then i put everything back together...loose wires, cables, extension cords, speakers, cup holders, sparklers, and snuff boxes...and it acted up again.

So I'm thinking maybe a bad connection port on the monitor as I shook it up pretty good moving things around...so I just switched in my NEC LCD and it immediatley worked with the same cable.

But I don't like the color as well.....I'll have to play with the monitor adjustments.

As far as I am aware, all laptops have a VGA output. If you want to try out another VDU, modern TVs have a VGA input. With any modern laptop you can plug in an external mouse into one of the USB sockets. You can also get an external USB keyboard. You might find one at the tip or at a cheap imports shop. If you are used to typing on traditional keyboard , typing on a laptop with a 15"6 screen takes a bit of getting used to but eventually you will get used to it.

My rule with laptops is before moving it, always unplug all peripherals.

Laptop's in the kitchen...my wife uses it mostly. Very rarely we'll hook it up to a big screen tv to watch old What's my Line, or Amos and Andy, or something like that on You Tube. I have a little mouse on it as I hate those finger pad things.
