It seem to me that the more familiar a situation is, the less people are inclined to pay attention to it. A steady decline in the morality of society in general may seem less shocking than a sudden, unexpected change in the behavior of a close acquaintance. This gradual decay of morality is dangerous.

Fucking who you want to fuck, and wearing what you want to wear while you do it, isn't a decline in morality and it certainly isn't any of society's business.

    My 2 cents.

War, murder, theft, causing misery in others for your own benefit, these are immoral things. Everything else is, as said above, none of your business

. Society has always been immoral, there is no gradual decay. Humanity is as it has always been.

By the definition of "causing misery in others...", Cheating is inherently immoral, therefore the "fuck who you want to fuck" notion doesn't hold. I often hear promiscuity considered immoral, probably depends on the culture and circumstances, although I think then War could have some exceptions as well.

Perhaps morality is a quite abstract concept and being such, many of these issues rarely, if ever get fully understood.

Promiscuity is only held in bad views when it is the women in full control of her life and sexual.

When a guy sleeps around nobody says anything.

Basically, men fear a strong independent woman capable of living her own life.

Yah promiscuity is primarily held in bad views when it comes to women, however I think it's generally viewed as a weakness, essentially one is a slave to carnal desires.

I think the respect women are supposed to honor their bodies with goes along the lines of the honor men are supposed to show towards women in not hitting them.

Whether fallacious or not, restraining impulses seems like a part of acting civilized.

I don't think that morality being abstract is the problem. Morality is also subjective and some people act like their set of morals are absolute.

In an obvious sense the media is perpetuating it by making such big news of it, but I assume you mean in a more calculated sense. Doesn't the mainstream media generally attempt to maintain the status quo?

Why would they all of a sudden be reaching for novel ways to twist our thinking?

Some suggest morality is subjective, some suggest it's absolute, which is why I said it's abstract and hence the problem.

Well that it is subjective seems factual, the assertion that morality is absolute (as in there's only one way to morally interprete a thing or action as good or bad/evil) seems not. I mean there only have to be 2 people with a different moral opinion on something to make it apparent that its subjective...right?

One would think but then we could also presume that morality is Objective and the other person is being manipulated by Satan.

As long as we acknowledge that it would be nothing more than presuming and not an apparent fact (like 2 different moral convictions on the same matter) im not bothered with the idea being voiced :p

Being that the issue comes out next month, how are you sure National Geographic is celebrating the transgender issue rather than just covering it?

They discuss a wide range of issues and not all of them that make the cover are inherently there to be celebrated. I.E.

Elaborating on that, ^, National Geographic covers a variety of stories from many different cultures, generally in an unbiased way.

I wonder if a cover story on the Kathoey (ladyboys) of Thailand would be regarded as celebrating their culture as well and met with the same type of controversy, or would it be regarded as an unbiased look at a culture many dont understand? Is western culture generally expected to be more "normal" than other cultures covered in National Geographic?
