I like the idea of attempting to go against machine(s) supposedly determined to know human's fate and understand reality better than people, which is what Neo is faced with.

Along those lines, I also like Zeus in God of War II

The hero Kratos is literally going against the King of the Gods to avenge what he deems wrong in losing his wife. Notions of free will pervade this game and theme.

Lastly I'd choose Commodus from Gladiator. This is for basically the opposite kind of reason, he is less powerful and brave than his heroic brother, so has to resort to deviant and lowly tactics to gain power.

If we're going to go by actors, Heath Ledger's Joker was absolutely exceptional! I've followed the Batman films/cartoons and the various Joker reincarnations that have popped up across the years, and in my opinion none can hold a candle to Ledger's performance. It's almost as if he created a new character in The Dark Knight. I think Ledger's skill, not simply the character's reinstallment, is truly why the Joker has had such a big boost in popularity today.

There's the Joker, and then there's Heath Ledger's Joker...

Arthur Mitchell played by John Lithgow in showtime's Dexter. He is a great character actor and this is my favorite role of his. It was also the best season of Dexter and the last good season

    Hannibal Lecter

    Patrick Bateman of American Psycho
Clearly I have a weird serial killer thang

Also, as a big Harry Potter fan I think Lord Voldemort is an iconic villian but in some ways I think Delores Umbridge was a more effective one. Voldemort is fantastical and supernatural but Professor Umbridge is so, so real. She is every ordinary German housewife turned Nazi, she is the Bolshevik who was allowed caviar while all of Russia, edit..er, the USSR starved because of her blind loyalty and devotion. She is the type of person who is too dumb to formulate her own moral standards so she gravitates towards the most authoritarian voice she hears. She is one dangerous lady because there are so many of her, metaphorically speaking

Do you know why this was such a great movie?

Because other than the main guys missus who shows up for 20 seconds, the rest of the movie is solely focused on males. And with males comes no bullshit drama.

My daddy always told me "women always fuck up a good movie".

Case and point with this film. Get rid of the drama and you got a decent film. :)
