When you go out for drinks, how much do you generally tip the bartender? I usually tip $1 per drink, but some people think that's crazy. Those are usually the people who don't tip at all.

10 - 15% on the total bill at the end of the night. 20% if the service was exceptional, and less than 10% if the service was poor.

If I go up to the bar to order a drink, then I'll usually tip $1.00.

I once tipped 100% on a round of drink orders at the bar. I may or may not have thrown a piece of fruit at the bartender, though, and so I think that 100% tip was much deserved.

I think it also depends a lot on what you order. I normally order only beer, so I think $1 is reasonable. But for cocktails and mixed drinks then $2-3 at least.

When I go to restaurants, I always tip 20%... unless the service really sucks.

Why don't they just pay there staff properly

Then there's no reason for tips

It's a scam, you have I idea how much the staff get paid

With tips, front of house gets more than back of house

    Why exactly?

Generally $1 per drink, although a recent time I went out, some of the bars were using those Square Registers with Ipads and it forces a percentage tip like 15% - 20%. I might have to No Tip a couple drinks in, if I happen to encounter those again and don't have Dollar Bills.

I don't drink mixed drinks, though my girlfriend occasionally does. I was saying IF I or anyone else was to order a mixed drink, then it should be a $2-3 tip. I only drink beer when I go out. Occasionally I might have scotch whiskey or cognac, but 95% of the time it's just beer.

Because being a bartender is hard work, especially when it gets busy. If you were ever a bartender then you would know.

I am waiting for Themnax to respond to this thread telling us why he doesn't go to bars, and why going to bars is stupid.

25 - 30% of the total bill usually. If I only have a drink or two and the tab is just a few dollars I'll tip 50% sometimes.

Yeah, but the guy that unloads the kegs doesn't get tips, the cleaners don't.

    Why just front of house?

You don't tip the poor schmuck at McDonald's on $5 an hour, but you tip some bartender who for all you know could be making more some nights in tips than you make.

my mom was a bartender and she did every job you mention above. so yes she deserves a tip. (i know its different in different countries but in this one bartenders and waitresses work for tips)

as for the percentage... i dont tip by percentage when i am drinking. why should the bartender get a $3 tip because i like an expensive beer? it is the same amount of work for them to open up a bottle of bud as it is for them to open up a bottle of the great divides yeti chocolate stout.
thats why i go by $1 a beer and then i change it according to service.
if i am eating also it depends on what i eat and how much i drink. usually 15-20% depending on the ration of drinks or growlers or service.

Yeah I'm probably an overly excessive tipper but I like to tip well. I've never worked in the service industry but I've had enough friends over the years who worked tip based jobs and I know a good tip can make someone's night, and I know for every lavish tipper there is some asshole who stifffs them because they don't understand servers make $2 an hour coughVGcough

Also I used to go to this bar that would ring a bell whenever someone got a good tip, so I am also pavlov's dog

Not that I go to bars anymore, but I generally tip 15-20% at restaurants.

When I did go to bars, and if I'm ordering drink-by-drink, rather than a tab, I'll be sure to make my initial tip larger.

    $1 per beer normally.

in restaurants, or if i'm keeping a tab, i usually do $5 or ~20%, whichever is greater.

several of my friends are shitty tippers, and i've publicly called them out on it a few times. i've worked for tips before, i feel for those people.

yeah, i don't know what kind of fancy establishments vg frequents, but where i go the bartender is the only employee most of the time, and takes care of all that stuff.

Most beers go for $5-6. So a dollar is about a 15%-20% tip give or take. I don't do mixed drinks that often as you can never trust if a bar tender is gonna make it taste like a sugar bomb detonated in my mouth.

Why would I tip someone for doing a job I'm perfectly capable of doing myself?

I'll tip 10-15% a service. Sometimes nothing. If the service wasn't good, no tip given. You want tips? You earn them with respect to your customers.

When I'm somewhere I frequently visit I'll start a tab, that's how they get tips, but I won't tip for single drinks, unless they're going to hand back shrapnel change I'm not interested in, then by all means, go nuts and have the tip.
